7 steps to safely using portable generators /stormcenter/7-steps-safely-using-portable-generators Tue, 13 Sep 2022 01:17:00 +0000 /7-steps-safely-using-portable-generators Power outages and high summer temperatures often lead people to turn to portableto keep air circulating and refrigerators running. While standalone generators can make life a little more comfortable during power outages, if not used correctly, they can cause injuries and even be fatal.

Here are some basicwhen using a generator:

  1. Follow all manufacturer instructions for proper setup and operation.
  2. Use proper extension cords and never plug the generator into a wall outlet.
  3. Place generators at least 20 feet from a building, away from doors, windows and vents. Make sure the generator has three to four feet of clear space on all sides and above it to ensure adequate ventilation.
  4. Never use a generator indoors or in any partially-enclosed area. Even with ventilation, generators can produce high levels of carbon monoxidevery quickly.
  5. Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms in your home or business; test alarms frequently and replace dead batteries.
  6. Do not use a generator in a wet area. This can cause shock or electrocution.
  7. Do not fuel your generator when it is running. Spilling gas on a hot engine can cause a fire.

While most portable generators carry several hazards, including electric shock and fire, the most generator-related fatalities are caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that builds up quickly in enclosed spaces. If levels are high enough, it can be deadly in as little as five minutes.

According to data from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, between 2005 and 2017, more than 900 people died of carbon monoxide poisoning while using portable generators. Sadly, after Hurricane Laura devastated Lake Charles in 2020, 14 of the 28 storm-related deaths were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from unsafe use of emergency generators.

Carbon monoxide is odorless and colorless, so even though you may not smell or see exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed. Opening doors and windows or using fanswill not prevent carbon monoxide build-up in your home or business. If you start to feel sick, dizzy or weak while using agenerator, get to fresh air immediately. The toxic fumes from generators can rapidly lead to fullincapacitation and death. If you experience serious symptoms, get medicalattention right away, and inform medical staff that carbon monoxidepoisoning is suspected.

If you experience symptomswhile indoors, have someone call the fire department todetermine when it is safe to re-enter the building.

Don’t let the quiet fool you: Hurricane season isn’t over /stormcenter/don-t-let-quiet-fool-you-hurricane-season-isn-t-over Thu, 25 Aug 2022 21:49:00 +0000 /don-t-let-quiet-fool-you-hurricane-season-isn-t-over Our region has been lucky this year, but don’t let your guard down. We are entering the peak of the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season.

In fact, some of our most destructive tropical events have occurred in August.

  • Hurricane Katrina hit Aug. 29, 2005.
  • Hurricane Harvey hit Aug. 25, 2017.
  • Hurricane Laura hit Aug. 27, 2020.
  • Hurricane Ida hit Aug. 29, 2021.

We prepare for severe weather year-round.
Our employees stay so we can restore power to customers as quickly and safely as possible:

  • We complete annual storm response exercises to ensure company procedures are reviewed and updated before hurricane season begins.
  • We perform inspections of the grid and our facilities, using infrared cameras and drones to inspect power lines and look for “hotspots” and other areas that might be likely to fail.
  • As we identify areas to upgrade equipment, we replace outdated equipment with more reliable and modern infrastructure.
  • We conduct “sky to ground” vegetation trimming to removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line and outside our standard trimming scope. Satellite imagery and computer modeling is used to help predict when trimming may be needed.

We also monitor severe weather 24/7. When weather threatens, we use forecasts to predict the number and duration of outages that could occur. Based on those estimates, we bring in workers from around the country to restore power.

And we don’t stop there. We’ve been focused on building a more resilient power grid for decades; however, we are accelerating these efforts to better protect our infrastructure against severe weather events, such as hurricanes and ice storms.

Safety is one of our core values and we encourage you to make it your top priority, too.

Entergy urges customers to prepare for hurricane season /stormcenter/entergy-ready-for-hurricane-season Tue, 03 May 2022 02:20:00 +0000 /entergy-ready-for-hurricane-season Take simple steps now to prepare your home or business for severe weather

Entergy is ready for another hurricane season beginning June 1, and we want you to be ready, too.

We prepare for the worst of what Mother Nature might bring, because our customers live in areas prone to severe weather. We know that weather impacting our region is increasing in strength and occurring with greater frequency.

And this hurricane season will be just as active, with at least 19 named stormsand nine hurricanes.

Our storm preparations are performed year-round – from inspections and vegetation management to training and industry collaboration. Since trees and other vegetation are a leading cause of power outages, we conduct “sky to ground” vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line and out. And, we use satellite imagery and computer modeling to help predict when trimming may be needed.

Enhancing the grid is also an ongoing effort that’s well-planned. We know perform well, for example: During Hurricane Ida, a section of our transmission system with roughly 380 newly built structures was in the direct path of the storm, and only three of them were damaged – and not by wind, but by flying heavy-duty barge debris. In fact, flying debris is often another cause of damage to our equipment.

We stand storm ready. We have a proven plan of continuous preparation, planning and training. As severe weather threatens, we monitor, mobilize and act.

As we recognize National Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 1-7), now is a good time to make your own storm preparation and safety plans.

Stay prepared

Staying storm ready is a full-time job, 24/7, 365 days a year. When there’s a severe weather threat, we use forecasts and computer models based on experience with past storms to predict an estimated number and duration of outages that could occur. Based on those estimates, we will call on restoration workers from around the country as needed to safely get the power back on as quickly as possible.

Assessing damage, deploying personnel to the right place with the right materials and restoring power are all processes we continually plan for and improve. In fact, Entergy employees across the company complete annual storm-response exercises to make sure procedures are reviewed and updated prior to the beginning of hurricane season.

Safety is one of our core values and we encourage you to make it your top priority, too. Take the time now to get your personal storm plans in place and make a kit with the basic supplies needed in an emergency. You can learn how to make an emergency kit and get important severe weather safety tips on the.

Another preparation step we take is supporting the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program. Entergy shareholders provide an annual $250,000 commitment to support the program which helps our communities better prepare for and recover from potential disasters. The contribution will help streamline the response process in times of disaster, allowing funds to arrive more quickly to help those affected across the company’s four-state service area.

Throw me something recyclable, mister /blog/throw-me-something-recyclable-mister Tue, 22 Feb 2022 02:00:00 +0000 /throw-me-something-recyclable-mister It’s Carnival season in New Orleans. A time for floats, throws and fun. But when the parades are over, the clean-up begins. And what a clean-up it is: more than 2.5 million pounds of debris is left on the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

This trash — plastic cups, doubloons, toys and beads – can make its way into storm drains, where it increases the chance for flooding, and into the environment, creating ahazardto wildlife. But with a little effort, these items can be collected and recycled.

That’s why we are proud to partner for a more sustainable Carnival season by supporting several projects through our Environmental Initiatives Fund.

The EIF, funded by company shareholders, identifies environmentally beneficial projects or programs that help better the environment by reducing emissions, protecting natural resources and restoring wetlands and forests.

Entergy is once again working with, a nonprofit organization focused on waste prevention, to increase recycling efforts and expand the use of eco-friendly throws and consumable goods. Formed in 2017, Grounds Krewe’s efforts have proven to be the most successful parade waste reduction and recycling effort in the history of New Orleans.

“Supporting a recycling program that helps ensure a sustainable Mardi Gras, which is so closely associated with our company hometown’s unique culture and appeal, fits well with our mission to add sustainable value to our communities and our commitment to protect the environment,” said Kelli Dowell, Entergy’s director of environmental policy.

On the Route Parade Recycling
Revelers will benefit from a parade recycling activity in partnership with Entergy, ArcGNO, The Urban Conservancy and Republic Services.

Paradegoers should be on the lookout for volunteers in neon vests Feb. 26, during the krewes of Iris and Tucks parades and Feb. 27, during the krewes of Okeanos, Mid-City and Thoth parades. Volunteerswill distribute labeled recycling bags to paradegoers before the first parade and collect unwanted throws, aluminum cans and plastic waste following the last parade.

Sustainable Throw Catalog
Entergy is also helping ensure a more sustainable Mardi Gras even before a parade begins. Grounds Krewe was awarded a grant from Entergy’s shareholder-funded Environmental Initiatives Fund to launch an online.

Catalog items are made from sustainable materials and biodegradable packaging and promote Louisiana’s unique culture. This year’s environmentally friendly options include red beans, jambalaya mix and ground coffee. Keep your eyes peeled and your hands raised high for these coveted sustainable throws throughout the Carnival season.

Employee volunteers help customers maximize tax returns /blog/employee-volunteers-help-customers-maximize-tax-returns Mon, 31 Jan 2022 22:32:00 +0000 /employee-volunteers-help-customers-maximize-tax-returns Entergy’s ongoing support of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites demonstrates the company’s commitmentto empowering families and growing our communities.Since 2009, oursupport of VITA sites has helped return $298 million to more than 164,000 residents throughout our service area.

The EarnedIncome Tax Creditis one of the nation’s most effective tools for lifting low-income workers and their families above the poverty line. The federal government estimates EITC has lifted more than 5.6 million people out of poverty, including 3 million children; however, it is estimated that one out of five people who qualify for the EITC fail to claim it.That is where Entergy’s support comes in.

We help increase the amount of federal money returned to our customers by raising awareness of the credit and supporting VITA sites to help qualifyingcustomers avoid high fees. Entergy’s VITA Plus program also provides customers with the opportunity to receive other services aimed at economic self-sufficiency, such as savings, credit repair, free bank accounts and financial coaching.

Since 2009, Entergy’s support of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites has helped return $298 million to more than 164,000 residents throughout the company’s utility service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The program has resulted in an estimated $450 million in economic benefits to the communities served by Entergy.

This tax season, Entergy will support free tax preparation services in person or virtually at VITA tax preparation sites. Due to COVID-19, many VITA sites are offering drop-off services. Customers can contact theirto confirm available services and sign up atto get their taxes prepared.

Entergy’s First ‘Day of Pro Bono Service’ Helps Low-income Residents /blog/entergys-first-day-pro-bono-service-helps-low-income-residents Wed, 10 Nov 2021 20:45:00 +0000 /entergys-first-day-pro-bono-service-helps-low-income-residents Entergy employees worked together to help low-income community members during the company’s first Day of Pro Bono Service Oct. 28.

Thirty-four attorneys and law students, including Entergy counsel from seven offices, collaborated to support a virtual legal clinic created and organized by Entergy, answering questions submitted toby low-income community members throughout the service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Examples of the questions they addressed included:

  • I get paid $3/hour as a server, and the employer takes some of my tips. Is this legal?
  • My mother gave notice to her apartment building to end her lease because she was moving into a home being built, but the build was delayed due to Hurricane Ida. The apartment building says they have already rented her unit. Does she have to move out of her apartment?
  • I was fired because I evacuated for Hurricane Ida. Is there anything I can do?

Collectively, participants logged 59.5 hours of legal pro bono time in just two hours – an approximate market value of $16,000 in legal services.

This was a first-of-its-kind event in our service area. Christy Kane, Entergy’s pro bono counsel, came up with the idea to bring together legal professionals in all four states, simultaneously, to help clear the queue of questions in each state’s freelegalanswers.org website.

“This event was an efficient and effective way to add sustainable value by helping low-income customers with pressing legal needs,” Kane said. “It was also fun to work with each other in teams, partnering with students and outside counsel from law firms Bradley and Duggins Wren. We look forward to hosting this again.”

Since 2012, the company’s legal pro bono program increased the commitment of company lawyers and paralegals to provide free legal assistance to some of the most vulnerable citizens living in our utility service territory.

In 2018, Entergy named Kane, a veteran litigator and leader of a Louisiana-based public interest law center, as Entergy’s first pro bono counsel. The Louisiana State Bar Association has honored members of the company’s legal department with the prestigious 2019 Friend of Pro Bono Award. In 2020, the Pro Bono Project named Entergy Outstanding Pro Bono Corporate Partner of the Year and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project awarded Entergy their Torchbearer and Pro Bono awards.

In 2020, the legal department dedicated 3,622 hours to pro bono service, resulting in $932,000 of in-kind legal services to help more low-income customers in the communities we serve.

Entergy’s Day of Pro Bono Service was held during National Pro Bono Week Oct. 24-30.

Christy Kane and co-workers worked virtually to help low-income residents.
