Rita Kolberg, Executive Assistant

“For much of my adult life, I lived within 10 miles of the plant, spent one Saturday a month comforting my dogs when the emergency sirens were tested, and drove 45-minutes to my job in Kalamazoo. A co-worker suggested I apply for a position at Palisades where his sister worked.ÌýÌý

“I had no idea Palisades employed the number of people that they do or the variety of positions available. In 1998, I was hired in as a human resource assistant and learned all about what it takes to hire an employee at a nuclear plant. After a few years, I changed positions and began working for the plant manager.ÌýAfter a couple years, I moved to my present job as the assistant to the site VP.Ìý

“As someone who for many years was self-employed, my family and I truly appreciate the overall benefit package I receive at Palisades. If you’re looking for a good income, great benefits and the opportunity to work with employees who are professional and have a strong commitment to safety, then come to Palisades.”

Edna Borden, Human Resources Representative

“I started working at Palisades in September 2015 during an outage as a contractor with GCA cleaning services. My son-in-law encouraged me to apply due to ample opportunities with Entergy for advancement in many different career areas.Ìý

“Previously, I’d worked for 30 years in the medical field, and I was a little nervous at first. But I quickly found it so easy and comfortable to work with all the Palisades employees, as there was never a time I was not treated with respect and professionalism.ÌýÌý

“Within a little over a year, I transitioned to the human resource department as an HR analyst contractor. I believe my professionalism, hard-work and dedication to the station and employees helped my manager to decide to offer me an Entergy position in early 2018.Ìý

“Our daily activities in HR are multiple, but my main focus is always on the people. I take great pride in helping employees resolve issues or address concerns, and that is one reason I enjoy working in HR. The culture of the plant, the professional attitudes and the spirit of the people make me Palisades Proud to work here! Palisades continually supports employee development through training, off-site education opportunities and on-site mentoring. Apply, apply, apply, and – when in doubt – apply.”Ìý Ìý

Shelley Miller, Financial Analyst

“I enjoy working at Palisades because they value their employees and show appreciation in many ways. Yes, we are expected to close in 2022, but the experiences and opportunities you will receive from Palisades are top notch. You’ll work with some of the brightest minds in various fields and create a network that could lead you to places you never dreamed. Entergy offers many opportunities at other locations. Your journey may start at Palisades, but you can write your own path.

“I started working at Palisades in 2014 for the finance department, as an accounts payable administrator. I was honestly unaware of the opportunities at Palisades and had never thought to apply. I’m glad I did, as I’ve since been promoted to financial analyst and begun serving as secretary for Women in Nuclear at Palisades.Ìý

“My advice to anyone thinking of applying is to take a chance.”

Kelly Howard, Senior Emergency Planner

“I enjoy working at Palisades for many reasons. I find my work challenging and rewarding at the same time. I appreciate the growth opportunities I’ve had at Palisades and have had many experiences through travel and training for work. I value the relationships I’ve made through the employee resource groups at Palisades and Entergy. Women in Nuclear (WIN) has given me so many opportunities of empowerment and development over the past 7 years.Ìý

“I started working at Palisades in January 2005 as a security officer. My brother encouraged me to apply for this role. He’d been a security officer for six months at the time and spoke highly of the organization and his coworkers. In January 2012, I accepted a position as supervisor of document control and records management, with 15 employees reporting to me. With the encouragement of my director, I set my eyes on the emergency planning department. In February 2016, I accepted my current role as senior emergency planner. My daily duties vary from staffing the emergency response organization to siren maintenance.

“If you’re driven by integrity, have a willingness to learn and enjoy being a part of a team that is motivated to be the best at what they do, Palisades is the place for you!”

Sarah Williams, Superintendent of Electrical Maintenance

“I’ve held four different positions in three different departments during my time at Palisades. I started working at Palisades in April 2013 and am currently the superintendent of electrical maintenance. In this role, I’m responsible for making sure our people in electrical maintenance are taken care of and that our performance meets expectations. Ìý

“In 2013, I started in programs engineering and became the equipment reliability coordinator in 2015. In 2017, I moved to the production department as the planning supervisor. This year, I moved to the maintenance department in my current role.Ìý

“I’m very thankful for each of these opportunities and have enjoyed being able to learn about each of the departments. Each position has allowed me to gain new perspective into how our departments work together to operate, maintain, and improve Palisades.

“I applied to Palisades after my husband and I decided to move back to Michigan after living in Pittsburgh for 5 years. At the time, we worked for Westinghouse and wanted to continue our careers in nuclear. My husband went to Cook and I obviously ended up at Palisades.

“What I enjoy most about working at Palisades is the people. As a team, we work hard, respect one another, hold each other accountable, and, most importantly, we offer support and help to our colleagues when needed. The advice I’d offer other women looking to apply at Palisades is to seek out other experienced women in the industry as either mentors or for your support network. Having the opportunity to get honest feedback and unfiltered advice is invaluable.”

Erica Boyer, Procurement Specialist

“I enjoy working at Palisades because of the people and the culture. My husband initially encouraged me to apply for a position at Palisades. He’d worked at Palisades for a couple of years already as an engineer and knew I would have opportunities to advance professionally.

“I started working at the plant in 2015 as the security administrator. After working in security for a few years, I transitioned to our supply chain department as a stock handler, where I worked for almost a year before taking my current position as a procurement specialist.Ìý

“My daily activities include purchasing parts for the plant and coordinating contracts with our vendors. As nuclear professionals, everyone at Palisades has a high level of integrity, so I feel like I can really trust my coworkers. My advice to other women considering applying to Palisades is to do just that, apply. We offer plenty of training and support.”

Joyce Keller, Senior Technical Instructor

“Prior to Palisades, I worked at various insurance and law offices, but I was looking for more variety and the opportunity to grow. Friends who worked at the plant encouraged me to apply. Over the past 30 years, I’ve found great mentors at various stages of my career, and they worked with me to help improve and upgrade my skill set. With encouragement and a desire to grow, I was willing to venture out of my comfort zone on many occasions, each time gaining confidence to support my next move. My high standards for quality were recognized and supported by others who helped direct me to positions where high standards were essential. I’ve had many great experiences, met many great people, and through hard work, I’ve enjoyed rewarding employment!Ìý

“My journey at Palisades began in December 1987 as a temporary employee entering maintenance work order data. I now reside in the training department as the instructional technologist coordinating instructor training, monitoring adherence to the systematic approach to training process, and coordinating training program accreditation renewal activities. Between 1988 and 1995 as a permanent employee, I held various clerical positions before being promoted to records supervisor. Later, I coordinated various programs for the site, such as engineering training, corrective action and assessment, and performance indicators.

“I encourage women to apply, find and use mentors, step out of your comfort zone, do not accept the status quo, and you will grow!”

Monica Peak, Regulatory Affairs Specialist

“Most people are surprised that I have a degree in English literature and work in nuclear power. There is more to power generation than the engineering piece!Ìý

“The opportunities to develop and grow both personally and professionally have been abundant throughout my career. I began my career in nuclear in 2012 at Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station in Omaha, Nebraska. I started as a contractor scheduling major projects and then moved to an in-house position in the corrective action program as an admin specialist. I later transitioned into maintenance as a mechanical maintenance scheduler.

“After Fort Calhoun Nuclear Station was shuttered for decommissioning in 2016, I joined the Palisades team as their production scheduler. Palisades has allowed me to hone my skills and continue to grow professionally. After the shutdown announcement at Palisades, I took advantage of a position opening to pivot from production to regulatory assurance as a regulatory affairs specialist. I have the opportunity to work with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission residents and oversee programs related to compliance. I enjoy that each day presents opportunities to learn something new about the plant and our regulatory requirements.Ìý

“Getting your foot in the door can be challenging, but I’d advise anyone considering applying to absolutely go for it! I encourage people to be persistent and keep interviewing for roles that appear interesting. The nuclear industry provides ample training and opportunity to achieve your developmental goals. It’s hard work, but it’s rewarding.”

Jinny Moceri, Nuclear Shift Manager

“I always wanted to be an engineer, working for a utility, bringing a necessity to the public.ÌýI believe it’s a very honorable endeavor to provide power to the state of Michigan. And at Palisades, I can bring that power to the public while protecting the environment of the state we all share. That’s why Palisades is the perfect place to work.

“Every day, I can spend a few minutes looking at Lake Michigan.ÌýThe people who work here are brilliant, funny and caring. I’m so lucky to live in a beautiful state and work in an environment of kindness and generosity. If you have an opportunity to apply at Palisades, don’t consider it, do it. I’ve never been treated any differently than anyone else who works here because I’m a woman, and this job has been incredibly fulfilling. I’ve been able to be part of evolutions which are never the same and always interesting and challenging.

“I started working at Palisades in September of 1989. I’m an electrical engineer who also has a senior reactor operator’s license to operate the plant.ÌýI’m qualified to the highest level as a senior reactor operator (SRO), being a qualified shift manager. I’m the most senior shift manager on the site. I work as the plant’s “Fix It Now” SRO, and in my spare time, I work on-shift to fill vacancies for the on-shift SROs. I assist in planning and scheduling our refueling outages, and I validate license examinations for our training department.Ìý

“I started at Palisades as an electrical and instrument and control design engineer. I was trained by the plant to become an SRO, and I’ve worked on-shift as a shift engineer, control room supervisor and shift manager. I’ve also been a work control center supervisor. “

Carrie Jones, Senior Specialist for Primary Chemistry

“I enjoy working at Palisades, as we have team members who always look for opportunities to improve and strive for more.

“My nuclear journey started while attending Michigan State University. I participated with INROADS – a program that helps students transition into careers from the classroom. The program sent my resume to a number of companies, one of them Consumers ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø – the company that owned Palisades at the time. Palisades was looking for an intern that had computer skills, and human resources forwarded my resume to them. I was hired as a chemistry intern the summer of 2000, which led to full-time employment. I graduated inÌýMay 2001, and started work in June 2001.Ìý

“All of my time at Palisades has been with the chemistry department. Over the past 18 years, I’ve been given the opportunity to develop my skills and advance my career. Today, my formal role is senior specialist for primary chemistry. When I started, I was placed in charge of the diesel fuel oil program and was considered a system engineer of the chemistry panels for the turbine analyzer and nuclear steam supply systems, as well as the software owner of a chemistry database system.

“As the years went by, additional duties or responsibilities were added like radiochemistry, department training coordinator, and chemistry department software owner. Women interested in joining nuclear need to be flexible and be open to new ideas and concepts. If you’re dedicated, your hard work will pay off.”
