On Dec. 31, 2021, Entergy completed its initial phase of upgrading more than 3 million electric meters for customers’ homes and businesses. Significant progress has also been made with less than 4,000 advanced meter upgrades remaining for gas services.

Installing advanced meters and the supporting communications network is one of several investments we have made to build a smarter, more resilient grid for everyone. Other enhancements include , the new and improved customer engagement portal, advanced software known as the Advance Distribution Management System used to visualize and control the distribution grid, the addition of new smart devices that can communicate with each other, and the ADMS system to coordinate and implement changes when an event occurs.

“Over the last few years, Entergy has significantly modernized the grid, most recently completing three million new meter installations across our four-state service area,” said Dale Claudel, Entergy’s vice president of grid modernization and strategy. “These new technologies bring real benefits to our customers, like putting more control in their hands to better manage their energy usage. It also gives us clearer insight to the power grid and how it is operating, ultimately creating a smarter energy future for our customers and communities.”

Advanced meters work together with other smart grid technology to identify power outages more accurately and automatically isolate them, which reduces outage times for our customers.

“These upgrades also lay the foundation for newer technologies and customer solutions, including distributed energy resources and energy storage,” Claudel said. “For example, solar panels combined with battery storage can play a key role in grid resiliency and flexibility in the near future. Our team is refining ways to integrate advanced energy technologies into the power grid and provide clean energy solutions for our customers.”

Letter to Agricultural Customers Regarding Advanced Metering /blog/letter-agricultural-customers-regarding-advanced-metering Wed, 06 Jan 2021 20:04:00 +0000 /letter-agricultural-customers-regarding-advanced-metering The following letter is being sent to our agricultural customers with electric irrigation pumps, each of which has its own meter. It includes information unique to these meters.

Dear customer,

Hopefully you have heard that Entergy Arkansas is upgrading its electric meters to an advanced metering system. This includes the meter on your agricultural well pumps.

Among the benefits of this metering system is the ability to read meters remotely. Because well pumps can be difficult to access, usage is sometimes estimated. We would always prefer to acquire a reading and bill for the actual amount consumed. With advanced meters, estimated readings should become a thing of the past.

Installation of advanced meters on the approximately 13,500 irrigation wells we serve began this month and will continue through 2021. Those that are currently active will be upgraded over the next several months. Those that are currently inactive will be upgraded when customer requests that the service be energized for the growing season.

Here are a couple of things you need to know about the advanced-meter upgrade on your irrigation well pump:

Leave Utility Switch ON

Our electrical standards require the installation of a disconnect switch on Entergy Arkansas’s side of the meter. We refer to this as the Utility Disconnect Switch because it should be operated only by the utility. Up to now, farmers would sometimes move this switch to the OFF position when they didn’t need the power. It is VERY IMPORTANT going forward that this switch be left in the ON position. Turning it off causes the advanced meter technology to automatically report an outage, resulting in a service call. Please do not touch the Utility Disconnect Switch. You should have a separate disconnect switch on your side of the meter, which you’re free turn off any time.

Monthly Bills

For accounts coded as APA or APA2, in the past, post-season energy usage was accumulated and billed at the beginning of the customer’s pumping season. After your advanced meter is installed, you will begin receiving monthly bills throughout the year reflecting the actual amount of electricity used each month. The overall amount you are charged will NOT change.

For accounts coded as APB, you will continue to receive monthly bills as you have historically. Bills rendered for months with no usage will continue to be billed on the minimum provisions in the rate schedule.

Other Advantages of Advanced Meters

In addition to remote reading, advanced meters offer several advantages compared to current meters, which include:

  • You will have digital access to usage data that is updated every four hours.
  • If there is a power outage that affects your pump, the advanced meter will notify Entergy Arkansas automatically, and we will respond. This is an improvement over the current system, which depends on you noticing an outage and then reporting it to us. Again, note that if you turn the Utility Disconnect Switch to OFF, the system will report it as a power outage.

Questions?

For a full set of Q&A about advanced meters, please visit our website at

Following are some Q&As specifically about advanced meters on agricultural irrigation meters:

Q: Is there any investment required on my part before you install the advanced meter?

A: No.

Q: In the past I’ve asked to have the service to my pump disconnected at the pole or at the Utility Disconnect Switch. Will I be able to do this in the future?

A: No. Doing so will de-energize the meter and interfere with the advanced meters’ communication network. You should have a separate disconnect switch on your side of the meter, which you’re free turn off any time.

Q: How can I avoid a monthly bill during months when I’m not using my pumps? Can I finalize the account and open it up again in the spring?

A: Irrigation accounts on the APA and APA2 rates do not incur any charges in months with zero usage outside the peak billing season, while accounts on the APB rate will continue to incur an 11kW minimum demand charge in all months where the account is active. If you choose to close the account during the off season, be aware that this will require you to establish new service every year, which may come with any applicable deposit and other requirements.

Q: Can I opt-out of the advanced meter on my well pump?

A: No. ϳԹ have the option to opt-out of receiving the benefits of an advanced meter – for a fee (both a one-time fee and a monthly fee) – but non-residential customers cannot opt-out of receiving an advanced meter

We hope you enjoy the advantages this new technology offers. We appreciate you being an Entergy Arkansas customer and would be happy to answer any questions you might have. You may contact our dedicated agricultural desk at:

Beware of Scams; Entergy Does NOT Require Payment Before Installing New Meter /news/beware-scams-entergy-does-not-require-payment-before-installing-new-meter Thu, 02 Jul 2020 06:46:00 +0000 /blog-post/beware-scams-entergy-does-not-require-payment-before-installing-new-meter/ Don’t be a victim of scammers. An Entergy Arkansas customer received a phone call June 26 from a number her caller ID said was Entergy. It wasn’t. The caller said the customer needed to go to Walgreens and put $398.62 on a GoBank card, then tell them the code on the card before Entergy could install her new meter.

This is a scam. Entergy will NEVER ask for any form of payment before installing a meter. Before we install your new meter, we’ll share either a mailed or emailed letter with detailed questions and answers about what to expect during your meter upgrade. Another notification will be sent a few weeks prior to your scheduled installation. Before beginning installation, the installer will knock on your door so you can be prepared and informed about the process. Installers will have a badged I.D., uniform and automobile cling displaying the Entergy logo.

As a reminder, here’s another common scam to be on the lookout for: Scammers call the customer directly, pretending to be an Entergy employee. Scammers threaten to disconnect the customer’s electrical services if instant payment on a past due bill isn’t received. They then direct the customer to transfer funds electronically, sometimes through money wiring systems or pre-paid cards such as MoneyPak or GoBank. In recent instances, callers have even started demanding immediate payment over the phone.

The callers often use sophisticated spoofing technology to replicate the local utility’s name and number on the customer’s caller ID, making it particularly difficult for the customer to spot this scam.

What should you do? Remember, Entergy NEVER demands immediate payment from customers over the phone. You shouldn’t give your personal information to strangers. If a call sounds suspicious, hang-up and call 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749) to speak directly with an Entergy customer service representative. If you believe you are a victim of this scam, notify the proper authorities, such as the local police or the state attorney general’s office.

See entergy.com/scams for more information on scams and how to avoid being a victim.

Planning for tomorrow. Powering generations to come. /blog/planning-for-tomorrow-powering-generations-come Thu, 15 Aug 2019 22:28:00 +0000 /planning-for-tomorrow-powering-generations-come Entergy Arkansas is committed to continuous improvement of its systems and services and utilizing the latest technology to build the smart grid. The first step toward modernizing and building a smarter energy future for our customers is transitioning to advanced metering infrastructure — or AMI — for homes and businesses we serve. It’s a foundation that allows two-way communication between us and our customers.

With AMI, customers will get more tools and better information to help understand and manage their energy use more effectively, which can lead to lower bills and potential energy reductions. We’ll be able to identify outages more accurately, so crews can make repairs and restore electricity more quickly. Having near real-time information on energy usage allows us to better answer billing and service questions.

Advanced metering in Arkansas will offer our customers the following important benefits:

  • More accurate outage information to helprestore power more quickly.

  • More detailed usage information to help customersbetter understand and manage their energy use.

  • Improved customer servicethrough expanded, near real-time energy data to help resolve billing issues more effectively.

ϳԹ diversity means sustainability and affordability.

Maintaining a diverse energy portfolio is critically important for the short- and long-term well-being of our customers. Entergy Arkansas currently utilizes solar, nuclear, hydro, natural gas and coal energy sources. This level of diversity not only helps prices remain as low as possible, but it helps to control emission output.

We’re always looking to the future, and that includes solar energy Arkansas’ largest solar energy project, the Stuttgart Solar ϳԹ Center, started producing energy in 2018, providing 81 megawatts of clean, reliable power. A 100-megawatt solar facility in Chicot County will do the same in mid-2020 and a proposed solar facility near Searcy will provide another 100 megawatts by late 2021. Together, these facilities will provide enough clean power to energize more than 45,000 homes.

Entergy Arkansas is committed to a diverse energy portfolio because we’re committed to do right by our customers.

Investing in the power grid. Investing in our future.

The future of Arkansas depends on an efficient, reliable electrical infrastructure. This infrastructure network, also known as the power grid, is comprised of transmission and distribution lines, substations and transformers. The lines are the “roads” that deliver electricity to our customers, and the substations tie the transmission and distributions systems together.

We’ve made significant investments to strengthen Arkansas’ infrastructure to meet the growing needs of our residents and businesses for years to come.

Some of the improvements include:

  • Replacing wooden poles withstronger composite materialto test for strength and longevity as part of a pilot program.
  • Adding over254 miles of new distribution and transmission linesto the approximately 40,000 miles of lines currently managed by Entergy Arkansas.
  • Replacing copper distribution wires withlighter, more reliable aluminum wires.
  • Increasing tree-trimming and vegetation management efforts throughout the25,600 square miles managed by Entergy Arkansas.

Entergy Arkansas to Bring Advanced Meters to Homes and Businesses /news/entergy-arkansas-bring-advanced-meters-homes-businesses Thu, 06 Sep 2018 21:26:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-bring-advanced-meters-homes-businesses/ Company uses technology to modernize electric grid, build smarter energy future

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas – Outages identified more accurately. Faster outage restoration response times. Billing and service questions answered more efficiently. Potential energy saving tools for customers. These are all benefits of Entergy Arkansas’ vision for a smarter energy future, through the company’s deployment of advanced metering. This multi-year project was approved by the Arkansas Public Service Commission, and is already underway with the design and build of the communications network and IT systems taking place over the past two years. This network equipment will start to be installed on electric poles and structures in September 2018. Advanced meters will begin to be installed in 2019 with projected completion in 2021.

“Our goal is to deliver safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our customers,” said Laura Landreaux, Entergy Arkansas president and CEO. “As part of this commitment, we are upgrading our systems with new technology that will allow us to offer additional benefits to our customers.”

Upgrading to advanced meters has numerous benefits, including:

  • New online tools will be available to customers that help them better understand and manage energy usage more effectively, which can lead to energy usage reduction and potentially lower bills.
  • No more waiting until the end of the month to review energy usage. Via the online tools, customers can log into their account and view how much electricity has been used the day prior, shown in 15-minute increments.
  • With better information, Entergy Arkansas can answer customers’ billing and service questions more quickly and effectively, improving customer service.
  • The company will have a clearer real-time picture of the power grid and how it is operating. Outages can be identified more accurately, so crews can arrive on the scene more quickly to make repairs.

Advanced metering is digital technology that enables secure two-way communication between the customer and Entergy Arkansas. Each meter is equipped with a network radio. The radio transmits meter readings to the electric network access point, housed on an electric pole near the meter. This data is then transmitted to the utility through a secure cellular network. Once a customer’s meter is installed, they may access their online account to view daily energy use, displayed in 15-minute increments. Advanced metering also brings opportunities for potential new programs that can help further reduce customers’ energy usage and better support environmentally sustainable communities.
