Little Rock Port achieves Entergy Arkansas ‘Select Site’ Certification /news/little-rock-port-achieves-entergy-arkansas-select-site-certification Sat, 08 Mar 2025 04:36:00 +0000 /blog-post/little-rock-port-achieves-entergy-arkansas-select-site-certification/ 875-acre industrial megasite marks economic development milestone

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Little Rock Regional Chamber and Entergy Arkansas announced today the completion of its Select Site certification for a new 875-acre industrial megasite located on the southeastern portion of the Little Rock Port. Representatives from both organizations along with Congressman French Hill, Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr., Pulaski County Judge Barry Hyde, and leadership from the Little Rock Port Authority were on hand to celebrate this achievement.

Select Site is an initiative designed to provide Entergy Arkansas-served communities with a competitive advantage and shovel-ready sites. This developmental and promotional tool allows communities to certify sites using a set of comprehensive and pre-determined criteria to better satisfy site location searches by consultants and companies.

“In 2016, I called Rep. French Hill requesting help in scheduling a meeting with the FAA to discuss relocating the VOR Cone at the Little Rock Port. As a past Chairman of the Little Rock Regional Chamber, Rep. Hill understood it was essential to the future economic growth of the central Arkansas region,” said Jay Chesshir, President and CEO of the Little Rock Regional Chamber. “That was the first step in a decade-long journey in partnership with Bryan Day and the Little Rock Port Authority to study this site, acquire the property, build the infrastructure, and take the site to market, which we are officially doing today.”

“Thanks to unprecedented investment from Mayor Scott and the Little Rock City Board of Directors, with infrastructure support from Judge Barry Hyde and the Arkansas Economic Development Commission, this is the largest certified industrial site in central Arkansas and is well-suited for a large manufacturer who needs access to interstates, rail and port facilities, plus adjacent land for suppliers,” Chesshir added. “The additional marketing that comes with certification also provides our site with an advantage as we compete for investment against other markets around the United States. Our last certified site led to our recruitment of Amazon, which has created thousands of jobs for people across the metro Little Rock region. We hope to have an even larger impact with the Little Rock Port Megasite.”

“The Little Rock Port Megasite provides access to road, river, rail, and runway – intersecting in the heart of the state’s Capital City,” said Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. “This certification sets the stage for a transformational economic development project that could change the face of Little Rock and provide high-paying job opportunities for residents in our city and across the central Arkansas region.”

“In Arkansas, we are prioritizing the development of shovel-ready sites to attract top-tier companies to our state,” said Clint O’Neal, executive director of the Arkansas Economic Development Commission. “The Little Rock Port Megasite will be a significant asset for the State of Arkansas as we pursue economic development prospects, and Entergy’s ‘Select Site’ certification positions it as a location that meets the qualifications that site selectors and companies look for in an industrial site.”

Entergy Arkansas Vice President of Business and Economic Development Danny Games was on hand today to recognize the megasite as the newest Entergy Arkansas Select Site and commended the group on the completion of the comprehensive review and documentation process. A grant was provided by Entergy Arkansas to help offset some of the costs associated with the certification. Also, as a benefit of certification, custom videos and 360 images of the site were created by Entergy. The megasite will be featured on the Arkansas Site Selection Center. You can view the.

“A site of this size comes with the expectation that utility partners will be able to provide the necessary infrastructure and energy to power large customers,” said Laura Landreaux, president and CEO of Entergy Arkansas. “This is one important reason we are advocating for the Generating Arkansas Jobs Act of 2025 to ensure that we are prepared to provide all of Arkansas with the power they need to attract high-paying jobs and great employers. That is why we appreciate the Governor for supporting the Generating Arkansas Jobs Act and the General Assembly for considering the policy necessary to attract these jobs and investments in our state.”

The Select Site initiative helps communities better prepare their sites as winning candidates for high-tech, manufacturing and distribution projects with a thorough audit of the site’s readiness for new or expanding business. Through the Select Site program and the Arkansas Site Selection Center, Entergy Arkansas is helping to meet those needs. Other Select Site properties are located in Jefferson County, Magnolia, Newport, Osceola, Russellville, West Memphis, and Wynne.

“Build it and they will come” /blog/build-it-they-will-come Tue, 20 Aug 2024 23:23:00 +0000 /build-it-they-will-come Newport Tech Depot seeing unexpected growth in northeast Arkansas

The Newport Tech Depot in northeast Arkansas is living out its own version of the movie, Field of Dreams.

The facility began operations in 2020 in a temporary building in downtown Newport, Arkansas, as an IT training center and a co-working space for entrepreneurs and remote workers. Since then, it has become so much more.

At its new facility this year, the Tech Depot started offering training with a goal of having 500 people receive training by the end of the year. That goal has been shattered with an attendance count of over 1,100 persons in just the first half of the year.

“We have become a magnet for training,” said Jon Chadwell, director of Economic Development for the Newport Economic Development Commission. “It’s just really been kind of incredible to watch this thing unfold. We have been able to partner with more organizations for training than we projected.”

Entergy Arkansas played a huge part of getting the depot started, and the company continues to be a big supporter, including a two-year funding commitment totaling $100,000.

“Northeastern Arkansas is growing, and the Newport Tech Depot is an increasingly important part of the region’s success,” said Danny Games, director of business and economic development for Entergy Arkansas. “With the growth of industry and related businesses in Jackson County and surrounding counties, having qualified workers is critical in helping the region thrive.”

Training at the depot has run the gamut from computer training to self-defense. Classes include office skills, drone technology, corrections officer training, industrial maintenance recertification, small business development consulting, CPR for small business, transitioning from recovery to employment, ACT Bootcamp and much more.

The U.S. Economic Development Administration’s Austin Regional Office recently awarded Newport’s Tech Depot Project the coveted Star of the Southwest Award.

Chadwell said government and community support has been overwhelming, as well as many sponsors who made it possible.

“Entergy Arkansas’ sponsorship is making a huge difference in the lives of people in Newport and our region,” Chadwell told Entergy Arkansas employees recently. “Thank you for your belief in our dream through the investment you made. The investment is paying off in the lives of people in our community who are daily using the facility to create a better quality of life for their families.”

Tech Depot, a $4.27 million workforce development initiative in Newport, Arkansas, is receiving a $100,000 grant to acquire equipment and furniture to be used in training individuals for the jobs of today and tomorrow. Entergy Arkansas is partnering with the Newport Economic Development Commission and 17 private businesses to provide $494,500 in funding to equip the new Tech Depot facility.

Major grants by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, the Delta Regional Authority, the Arkansas Economic Development Commission through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Community Development Block Grant CARES Act (CDBG-CV) allocation and the Arkansas Office of Skill Development constructed a $3.1 million training facility, a free WiFi technology park with electric vehicle charging stations and a new parking area in downtown Newport. The investment from Entergy Arkansas and the other partners has been used to purchase computers, testing equipment, STEM labs, childcare furniture, equipment for a co-workspace and an outdoor learning environment. The training programs will target existing employees in the region, single parents who are earning a wage lower than the regional average, individuals in substance abuse recovery programs, people transitioning from incarceration and individuals seeking apprenticeship opportunities.

“We appreciate the leadership of the Newport Economic Development Commission for having the vision to address workforce training and development in such a comprehensive manner. The NEDC and Tech Depot’s initiatives will be an asset that serve the citizens, employers, and community for many years to come,” said Danny Games, director of business and economic development for Entergy Arkansas.

Executive Director of the Newport Economic Development, Jon Chadwell said, “Entergy Arkansas is a vital partner in economic development efforts across the state. Through programs such as Tech Depot or services like the Arkansas Site Selection Center, Entergy assists local communities as we work every day to help our neighbors to have increased opportunities to provide for their families. We are so grateful for their investment in Tech Depot and look forward to the growth it will provide for years to come.”

A grand opening for the Tech Depot project will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at 10 a.m. at 209 Hazel Street in downtown Newport. The public is invited to attend and celebrate this important investment to grow the region’s workforce. Still helping build Arkansas /blog/still-helping-build-arkansas Fri, 15 Sep 2023 19:49:00 +0000 /still-helping-build-arkansas Nearly 110 years ago, Harvey Crowley Couch (1877-1941) founded Arkansas Power Company with the mission to bring dependable and affordable distributed electricity to Arkansas. Though much has changed in the last century, that mission remains the same: Entergy Arkansas’ commitment to powering life throughout the state with reliable, diverse energy sources is stronger than ever.

Couch saw the enormous potential of Arkansas with its land, natural resources and people. He is known for his constant reference and unwavering commitment to “Helping Build Arkansas.”

“The fundamentals that drive our economic development philosophy at Entergy Arkansas have not changed from the days when Harvey Couch arranged for prospective investors and customers to travel to Arkansas to explore opportunities for investing in a growing electric utility and for investing in factories that employ thousands of our citizens,” said Danny Games, director of business and economic development for Entergy Arkansas. “Today, the primary business drivers are a good tax and regulatory environment, available tracts of land, access to utilities, proximity to good transportation alternatives, and a skilled workforce. Most existing and prospective customers have their own priority site selection drivers, but the fundamentals must work for them to be successful.”

Leaders who followed in his footsteps were resolute in continuing Couch’s commitment and mindset.

By 1955, leaders in Arkansas were determined to address their population losses to other states and created the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission (now the Arkansas Economic Development Commission or AEDC) chaired by Couch’s son, Harvey Couch, Jr. Under Harvey Couch Jr.’s leadership, the AIDC helped create more than 40,000 new jobs and secured more than $500 million in new investments for the state.

In partnership with the AEDC, Entergy Arkansas continues to lead the way in bringing business and industry to the Natural State. Most recently, the commitment of U. S. Steel to build a $3B steelmaking facility in Osceola made headlines and history. This project is bringing the most technologically advanced steel mill in North America to Mississippi County and is the largest private project in the history of Arkansas.

Osceola city leaders say the U. S. Steel project is changing the future of their region, now and for generations to come.

In addition to the U. S. Steel plant and a recently announced $3 billion expansion, Entergy Arkansas is building Driver Solar, a 250 MW facility next to the plant. The solar facility will not only power the U. S. Steel facility but will also generate solar power for nearly 50,000 customers and add to Entergy Arkansas’ clean energy assets. In addition to providing the benefits of emissions-free generation, the project will promote biological diversity and sustainability by hosting two Monarch butterfly habitat areas to exceed 70 acres.

Besides Driver Solar, Entergy Arkansas is adding other renewable generation facilities to serve its customers and communities with more clean energy in the coming years. In 2022, the company issued a request for proposals for 1,000 MW of wind and solar resources and discussed plans for up to 7 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2025, and as much as 14 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2031.

Entergy Arkansas already operates one of the cleanest electric generation portfolios in the country. That generation is predominately emission-free due to significant amounts of nuclear, hydro and solar generation in the portfolio. In addition to its solar-sourced power, Entergy Arkansas currently owns or operates two carbon-free nuclear generating units, which supply 65% of the company’s generating needs.

And its generation will be getting even cleaner over time. To meet customer demands and as described in the Integrated Resource Plan, Entergy Arkansas anticipates replacing a portion of our older natural-gas fired resources in coming years and all our coal-fired resources by 2030 with mainly renewable resources that will deliver needed emission-free electric generation to meet the load and energy requirements of our customers.

Entergy Arkansas’ economic development team – which includes four former AEDC team members – is dedicated exclusively to maximizing all these resources which are vital to future economic development in the state. By helping communities prepare for economic success as well as retain and recruit business in these communities, our priorities help ensure that Arkansas has the resources necessary to attract new jobs and economic growth to our service territory.

“We are proud that our clean energy portfolio and our commitment makes a positive impact on the state of Arkansas’ economic future,” said Games. “Our rates are consistently in the lowest quartile, which is a competitive advantage for our state and communities in attracting new investments and jobs. Unlike a lot of utilities across the country, we have never wavered in our support of helping build our state.”

While most people associate ‘economic development’ with bricks and mortar groundbreakings, the important work of community development precedes those results, including initiatives such as certified Select Sites, the Arkansas Site Selection Center, and our hands-on work with the Mid-South Basic Course and the Community Development Institute (CDI). Of vital importance is the support of our existing large customers led by our Economic Development, Customer Service, and Entergy Business Center and National account management team members as well as our Large Project Services and other internal groups.

“Often overlooked in the U. S. Steel success story are the countless hours of excellent account management and customer service provided to Big River Steel (BRS). Had BRS not been such a satisfied customer, we would never have had the chance to earn U. S. Steel’s business. There are a lot of unsung Entergy heroes who made that happen long before the U. S. Steel ground-breaking,” said Games.

Over the past two years, Entergy Arkansas has begun investing in the human capital of our customers and communities. At the high school level, Entergy is providing funding, personnel, and curriculum support for two high schools as a part of the Academies of Central Arkansas in conjunction with area chambers of commerce and other business partners. In addition to our ongoing H-Volt line worker training program partnership with Pulaski Tech, we’re also supporting an apprenticeship program with Arkansas Northeastern College and U. S. Steel, the Catalyst program at SouthArk College, and other initiatives soon to be announced.

Just this month, for the 16th year in a row, Entergy has been recognized as one of the nation’s top 10 utilities in economic development by Site Selection magazine. The recognition comes for corporate-wide efforts to help attract more than $37 billion in projects that could create nearly 23,000 jobs throughout the service region.

Games anticipates more growth dispersed across Arkansas in traditional manufacturing and distribution, chemicals, steel, and burgeoning opportunities in ‘digital’ sectors.

To work in the home state of our company’s founder and be charged with carrying on his legacy beyond year 110 is not lost on Games, Entergy Arkansas president and CEO Laura Landreaux, or other members of Entergy Arkansas’ leadership team.

“Anything and everything we have accomplished and built over the last several years represents the outstanding work ethic we have across our company and our desire and ability to deliver what customers need,” said Landreaux. “We are committed to doing whatever it takes to help build Arkansas in a way that benefits our customers and enhances our communities throughout the state.”

Entergy Arkansas industrial customer plays a significant role in the economy of South Arkansas /blog/entergy-arkansas-industrial-customer-plays-significant-role-in-economy-south-arkansas Thu, 27 Jul 2023 22:53:00 +0000 /entergy-arkansas-industrial-customer-plays-significant-role-in-economy-south-arkansas Entergy Arkansas provides electricity to approximately 730,000 customers in 63 counties. This year, we are featuring some of our key industrial and commercial customers by giving a more in-depth view of their business and how we power their business. The first company we will feature is LANXESS.

LANXESS is a global leading specialty chemicals company with 475 Arkansas-based employees across three facilities in El Dorado. The company acquired three facilities in 2017 and has been in its current location for six years. The site is the company’s largest in North America and has the distinction of being the first U.S. commercial bromine plant. The plant originated as a joint venture between Michigan Chemical and Murphy Oil to explore commercialization of oil production waste brine, which is rich in bromide salts used to make bromine.

The company makes elemental bromine that is used in a variety of flame retardants for electronics and other brominated products dealing with pharmaceuticals, food preservation, road treatments and photography.

LANXESS also plays a big role in the El Dorado community. Since 2017, the El Dorado team has provided more than $300,000 to Union County schools specifically for STEM education. Site representatives are embedded in several area community-focused, educational and non-profit organizations.

“Having reliable and sufficient power is critical to the way we operate – not only from a production standpoint, but also to best keep our employees, contractors, and neighbors safe,” Kevin Hazen, plant manager for LANXESS. “We appreciate Entergy’s ability to provide multiple and renewable sources that safely and predictably power our facility, knowing that the Entergy team shares our goal to be energy-efficient while reducing power-related emissions whenever possible.”

LANXESS is an important customer that has a significant impact on the economy of South Arkansas.

“Reliable service, affordable rates, and a clean generation portfolio with an increasing percentage of renewables are all very important factors in ensuring that operations are successful,” said Russell Harris, account manager for Entergy Arkansas. “LANXESS wouldn’t have a positive customer experience without the hard work and coordinated team effort on the part of multiple internal groups.”

Arkansas Nuclear One begins 29th Unit 2 refueling outage /news/arkansas-nuclear-one-begins-29th-unit-2-refueling-outage Tue, 18 Apr 2023 06:27:00 +0000 /blog-post/arkansas-nuclear-one-begins-29th-unit-2-refueling-outage/ Contract workers boost local economy; work ensures continuation of clean, reliable energy

RUSSELVILLE, Ark.¬†– Control room operators removed Arkansas Nuclear One’s Unit 2 from service April 15 to begin a scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. This ended a 501 consecutive day run for ANO 2 of safe, secure and reliable operation, the second longest continuous run in the unit’s history. During the outage, station and supplemental workers will perform maintenance and testing activities to prepare the station for its next operating cycle.

“ANO is proud to be conducting this essential work, which will include both refueling and regular maintenance that will allow us to remain a safe and reliable source of clean energy for the River Valley and the state of Arkansas” said Joe Sullivan, Arkansas Nuclear One site vice president. “We are welcoming a host of contract workers who will help us throughout the outage, and we expect their partnership to create an economic boost to our community as well.”

More than 1,100 contract workers, many from outside of the area, will help with the refueling outage, bringing economic opportunities for dozens of vendors and local businesses, including restaurants, hotels and stores.

Work will be completed by full-time ANO employees and supported by Entergy employees from its other nuclear plants and contract workers, including pipefitters, millwrights, ironworkers, carpenters, boilermakers, electricians, laborers, valve technicians, engineers, operating engineers and radiation protection technicians.

ANO is a dual unit site, housing two nuclear reactors. Unit 1 will continue operating during the Unit 2 refuel.

When plant operators take the unit offline, nuclear professionals remove a portion of the fuel from the reactor, organize current fuel rods and replace the old fuel with new fuel.

During the refueling, the team will also complete maintenance work and other projects to improve reliability. Every detail of a refueling outage is meticulously planned and every ANO worker plays an important role.

ANO is licensed to operate through 2034 and 2038, respectively. As a clean, carbon-free energy source, ANO is an important contributor to helping Entergy meet its commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Entergy Nuclear, which operates nuclear generating stations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, is headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi.
