LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas customers who need help paying their winter utility bills can apply now for up to $475 in assistance through the federal Low-Income Home ϳԹ Assistance Program, or LIHEAP. The program’s regular assistance application period runs Jan. 6 through the end of March, officials said, or until funds are expended while crisis assistance applications will be accepted through April 30.

LIHEAP is a critical, life-saving program that targets and serves the most vulnerable households, including older Americans, individuals with disabilities, and families with young children. Many rely on fixed monthly incomes, meaning that their pay does not increase when the cost of heating and cooling their homes increases. LIHEAP recipients make heartbreaking choices every day between food, medicine, or utilities.

LIHEAP is designed to lower the energy burden by paying benefits for home energy bills for low-income households, who pay a higher proportion of their income for home energy costs. The program is available during summer and winter, as heating and air units work harder and use more energy during extreme temperatures.

An online application is available for most Entergy Arkansas customers at , but applications can also be made in person at local community-based organizations.

“Customers can quickly and easily complete the LIHEAP application and upload the required documents from a computer, tablet or smart phone,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “We encourage family and friends to help those who might not be as tech-savvy to help expedite their applications when possible.”

ճ manages the LIHEAP program for electricity, natural gas and water, but applications for assistance must be made through a community-based organization. Customers can find their local community action agency online at www.adeq.state.ar.us/, along with a complete list of eligibility and required documentation to complete the application.

Eligibility in Arkansas is determined by household size and income, which is 60% of state median income and 150% of Federal Poverty Level. For example, a single individual with a maximum monthly countable income of $2,054 and a family of four with $3,949 would both be eligible. Required documentation includes digital copies of a photo ID for the utility account holder, Social Security cards for all household members, proof of income, proof of residency and copies of the most recent utility bills. Once approved for LIHEAP funding, agencies make a pledge on a customer’s account for reconnection or to prevent disconnection.

About 45% of Entergy Arkansas customers are considered low-income households, meaning their total income is less than $40,000 annually. Data also shows that one in five Arkansans faces food insecurity, as well as an inability to pay for other necessities.

“Entergy Arkansas is always seeking ways to help our customers and the LIHEAP program is an excellent resource to help during financial difficulty,” Hinkle said. “The online application makes the process faster to ensure your power stays on or can be reconnected if necessary, which is especially important when temperatures are low.”

The most recent data from the National ϳԹ and Utility Affordability Coalition indicates that while more than 327,000 households were eligible for LIHEAP funds, only 66,407 received the funding because the $41M in funding was exhausted. In Arkansas, 75% of those who did receive LIHEAP assistance had at least one vulnerable member: an elderly person, disabled individual or a child younger than 6.

Each year, representatives from utility companies including Entergy Arkansas and local community action agencies come together as part of LIHEAP Action Days to advocate for those who are most in need and implore congress to adequately fund the program.

Entergy Arkansas hosts interactive poverty simulation to better understand customer challenges /blog/entergy-arkansas-hosts-interactive-poverty-simulation-better-understand-customer-challenges Tue, 26 Nov 2024 20:39:00 +0000 /entergy-arkansas-hosts-interactive-poverty-simulation-better-understand-customer-challenges Every day, countless Arkansans face the harsh reality of poverty, where even the simplest needs become daunting challenges. It’s not just people without jobs that are facing poverty. There is a large amount of people in our state that are considered asset limited, income constrained and employed (ALICE). This means these individuals are earning more than the federal poverty level, but not enough to afford the basics where they live. Together, 47% of households in Arkansas are below the ALICE threshold.

For these individuals and families, survival often means choosing between heating a home or feeding themselves, delaying medical care to cover rent, or sending children to school without the supplies they need to succeed. Poverty isn’t just a statistic; it’s an unending series of sacrifices that wear down hope and limit opportunity. This daily struggle goes beyond financial hardship—it’s a constant, exhausting effort to overcome barriers that others never have to consider.

Unless one has experienced poverty, it’s difficult to truly understand the realities. Recognizing this, Entergy Arkansas recently hosted an interactive poverty simulation to offer its employees and community advocacy partners an eye-opening experience of the daily challenges faced by low-income families. The goal was to see how our customers are struggling firsthand and get insights into how to better serve them through these challenges.

Many participants also attended a poverty summit in conjunction with the simulation that was hosted by the . Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott, Jr. was one of the guest speakers at the event, where discussions centered on strategies to combat economic inequality and improve access to essential services. The mayor highlighted recent city initiatives focused on reducing poverty and called for strengthened collaboration among public, private and nonprofit sectors.

Entergy Arkansas is making a difference, and we continue to improve the resources and support available for our customers in need. As a company, our mission is to continually improve the communities we serve and is also reflected through our philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy.

“To truly serve our customers, we need to step into their shoes and understand the financial challenges they face every day,” said Ventrell Thompson, vice president of customer service for Entergy Arkansas. “When we see from their perspective, we gain insights into what they need most from us and it drives us to create solutions that genuinely make a difference.”

Th event, held at the University of Little Rock student center, featured a real-world simulation that exposed attendees to the realities of navigating life with limited resources and having to make difficult choices and obstacles associated with living in poverty. Through role-playing scenarios set in the fictitious “Realville, USA” city, participants were able to step into the shoes of individuals facing poverty and experience the daily hurdles they must overcome.

During the simulation, participants were assigned unique identities and encountered real-life scenarios such as the need for reliable transportation, access to food or managing a chronic illness. They experienced various scenarios over four weeks, simulated in 15-minute segments, that reflected the lives of individuals who were recently homeless, unemployed, navigating the social services system, surviving on public assistance and facing other challenges.

“Our goal with this simulation is to increase awareness and empathy in the community,” said Brandi Hinkle, senior public affairs representative for Entergy Arkansas. “We want people to understand that poverty is not just a lack of money. It’s a series of hard choices and compromises that people have to make every day.”

The simulation highlighted the balancing act required to survive on a tight budget. At the utility station, for instance, participants weighed paying an overdue electricity bill against buying groceries for the week. Each decision came with risk and reward, forcing participants to face the harsh reality of trade-offs that low-income families navigate to meet their basic needs.

Following the simulation, participants gathered for a debriefing session to discuss the importance of community resources and support networks in helping families break out of the cycle of poverty.

“The poverty simulation helped me understand the daily challenges and tough decisions faced by a number of our customers,” said Justin Hart, director of distribution reliability for Entergy Arkansas. “It showed me the resilience needed to navigate limited resources, which deepened my appreciation and commitment to addressing these issues at Entergy.”

Last year, our shareholders contributed $2.75 million to scores of nonprofit partners in Arkansas, totaling more than 200 grants, from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army to scholarships and youth programs, local governments and community events.

As we enter the thanksgiving season, we invite you to join us in our initiatives to make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through The Power to Care program or another Entergy Arkansas mission area, let’s come together to bring support, understanding and solutions to those who need it most.

Customers unable to attend an event in their area can still receive free, in-person tax preparation services by scheduling an appointment at one of the several Entergy-sponsored VITA sites through April 15. A schedule is available online at entergy.com/freetaxhelp.

“Our Super Tax Day events are an important part of our commitment to making a difference in our communities and meeting our customers’ needs in ways that improve their everyday lives,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “Tax season can be a challenging time of year for many of our customers, and we want to make sure they are able navigate the return process more easily and receive the most money for which they’re eligible.”

Entergy is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive and engaged culture that inspires all individuals to work together to operate a world-class energy business for customers, employees, communities and owners. That commitment extends into the community and is reflected through philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy that encourages individuals to take action.

“We are also pleased to partner with Arkansas Asset Builders and Our House,” Hinkle said, who added that a $2,000 donation will be given to Our House with additional funding being provided to Arkansas Asset Builders. “These two organizations are dedicated to empowering individuals and families in need in becoming more independent, financially stable and successful in the workforce, school and our communities.”

Tax preparation volunteers will help customers determine if they are eligible for this and other tax credits in an effort to maximize their tax refunds.

VITA services are not only free, they are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns. All volunteers who prepare returns must take and pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site prior to filing.

For the most accurate assistance and timely filing, customers should bring their state-issued photo identification, Social Security cards for all dependents, all wage and earnings statements such as W9s, daycare receipts, Form 1095 Health Insurance statements and routing information for direct deposit. For a complete checklist, visit .

In addition to tax preparation at Super Tax Day, customers will also receive information on how to enroll their children ages 16 and younger in Kids to College, a free child savings account powered by Entergy. Entergy will contribute $50 and match any savings in the account up to $365 this calendar year for each child.

Additional service providers will be also on hand throughout the day, including the Arkansas Foodbank, Arkansas Department of Human Services, Entergy Solutions, Legal Aid of Arkansas, and other wealth management groups.

For more than 15 years, Entergy has provided free tax preparation for low-to-moderate income customers at VITA sites throughout the Entergy region, including locations across Arkansas. LIHEAP application opens for winter utilities bill assistance /news/liheap-application-opens-for-winter-utilities-bill-assistance Fri, 19 Jan 2024 05:26:00 +0000 /blog-post/liheap-application-opens-for-winter-utilities-bill-assistance/ Most eligible ϳԹ Arkansas customers can apply online at GETLIHEAP.com

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas customers who need help paying their winter utility bills can apply now for up to $475 in assistance through the federal Low-Income Home ϳԹ Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The program’s application period runs Jan. 8 through March 22, officials said, or until funds are expended.

“Customers can quickly and easily complete the LIHEAP application and upload the required documents from a computer, tablet or smart phone,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility, “and we encourage family and friends to help those who might not be as tech-savvy.

“Entergy Arkansas seeks way to help our customers stay connected, and the LIHEAP program is an excellent resource to help during financial difficulty,” Hinkle said. “The online application makes the process faster to ensure your power stays on or reconnected if necessary, which is especially important when the temperatures are low.”

The Arkansas Department of ϳԹ & Environment manages the LIHEAP program for electricity, natural gas and water, but applications for assistance must be made through a community-based organization. Customers can find their local agency online at , along with a complete list of eligibility and required documentation to complete the application.

Eligibility is determined by household size and income.

Entergy Arkansas Wins Prestigious Stars of ϳԹ Efficiency Award /blog/entergy-arkansas-wins-prestigious-stars-energy-efficiency-award Wed, 13 Sep 2023 21:47:00 +0000 /entergy-arkansas-wins-prestigious-stars-energy-efficiency-award Entergy Arkansas is proud to announce it has been selected by the Alliance to Save ϳԹ to receive the prestigious Stars of ϳԹ Efficiency Utilities Award in recognition of its Low-Income Solutions program (LIS) which began in 2020 to serve income-qualified customers and those aged 65+. Since then, the program has provided energy-saving and safety upgrades to more than 9,000 customers in Arkansas.

“With the addition of LIS in 2020, our program portfolio for the first time provided access to many of our energy efficiency tools to our most disadvantaged customers, said Denice Jeter, ϳԹ Efficiency Manager for Entergy Arkansas. “LIS is a product of coordination with several stakeholders, including consumer advocacy divisions within state government, and we are honored to have the opportunity to support low-income customers through our energy efficiency portfolio.”

The LIS program provides fully subsidized weatherization measures such as duct sealing, air sealing, and insulation to not only increase indoor comfort levels for residents, but to also provide a significant impact on their financial energy burdens. Collectively, participating customers have seen energy savings of over 23,000,000 kWh, which is equivalent to 39,771 homes’ electricity use for one year.

“It is an honor to have our Low-Income Solutions program recognized by the Alliance to Save ϳԹ,” said Jeter. “This program gives more of our customers access to services and discounts to maximize their energy efficiency efforts and that is something we are very proud of.”

The Alliance to Save ϳԹ is a bipartisan, nonprofit coalition of business, government, environmental, and consumer leaders advocating to advance federal energy efficiency policy. Since 1993, the Alliance to Save ϳԹ has hosted the Stars of ϳԹ Efficiency Awards to honor organizations and individuals that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to advancing energy efficiency.

Entergy Arkansas and fellow award winners will be honored at the (better known as the ϳԹ Prom) at the International Spy Museum in Washington, DC on Tuesday, September 19th from 6-9 p.m.
