It can actually increase your winter energy bills! Nearly 90 percent of the heat produced by a wood-burning fireplace is lost through the chimney. Also, an open fireplace pulls in more air than is needed for burning, reducing the efficiency of your home even more.

ϳԹ-saving accessories, combined with regular maintenance, can help improve the efficiency of your fireplace while preserving its charm.

ϳԹ-saving extras

A number of fireplace add-ons can help save energy and reduce heat loss:

  • Flue sealers.Flue sealers are removable stoppers that prevent air from escaping through the chimney. These inflatable devices are inexpensive, and easy to install and remove. Place the flue sealer just below the damper to prevent heat loss and downdrafts when the fireplace is not in use. For maximum efficiency, have the flue cleaned before installation.
  • Doors and covers.Glass fireplace doors are designed to fit standard firebox openings. Secure fitting frames with fiberglass seals and adjustable inlet vents reduce heat loss. Removable fireplace covers- which are less expensive than glass doors-fit tightly around the fireplace opening to prevent heat loss when the fireplace is not in use.
  • Heat exchangers.Heat exchangers circulate warm air and force heat back into the room. While they improve the heating capacity of a fireplace by up to 10 percent, heat exchangers require routine cleaning to remove soot buildup, and installation is often expensive and complicated.
  • Inserts.By sealing off heat loss and radiating heat into the room, fireplace inserts can improve the efficiency of your fireplace by 65 percent or more. Double- and single-wall units are available, with double-wall models being the most energy efficient. Optional air-circulating fans improve heat distribution and overall efficiency. Professional installation is recommended.

Put a damper on heat loss

The damper on your fireplace is designed to prevent the warm air generated by your furnace from being lost through your chimney when the fireplace is not in use. Wear and tear can warp the damper so that it no longer seals tightly, reducing efficiency. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year by a certified professional. If the seal on the damper is not working properly, have it repaired or replaced.

Don’t let your energy dollars go up in smoke! You can save even more by checking out Entergy’s commercial and residential energy efficiency programs, which feature everything from free weatherization to rebates on energy efficient appliances.Seewhat’s available in your area.

Entergy Arkansas reminds customers of winter bill management and assistance options /news/entergy-arkansas-reminds-customers-of-winter-bill-management-and-assistance-options Thu, 13 Feb 2025 05:02:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-reminds-customers-of-winter-bill-management-and-assistance-options/ January’s snowfall and below-freezing temps may have increased customers’ energy usage

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas is reminding customers about available bill management and assistance resources after the company’s service area saw historic winter and record-breaking energy demand in January.

“This January brought snowfall and several consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures, causing some customers to use more energy to heat their homes,” said Ventrell Thompson, vice president of customer service for Entergy Arkansas. “Higher usage can lead to higher-than-normal bills, but we’re committed to providing resources, tools and payment options to help customers manage their energy costs through the winter months.”

Extreme weather impact and historic energy demand

According to the National Weather Service, January brought prolonged stretches of below average and even freezing temperatures to communities in Entergy Arkansas’ service area. The entire state of Arkansas experienced a significant winter storm January 9-10 that brought substantial snowfall to many areas, including more than six inches of snow in Little Rock, and a wintry mix of precipitation to the southern part of the state.

The chart below shows the average temperature lows and actual temperature lows from January 1-26 for these areas.

During this time period, the Little Rock area saw 14 days of temperatures at or below the average low. This extreme weather caused historic energy consumption as customers relied heavily on heaters and other appliances to stay warm.

The Entergy companies combined reached a new winter peak load of approximately 21,336 megawatt-hours during the week of Jan. 20, surpassing the previous record by nearly 790 MWh. Entergy Arkansas, specifically, surpassed its previous peak set in January 2024.

ϳԹ usage varies by household

While cold weather drives increased energy consumption, the impact on individual customers varies based on numerous factors, such as thermostat settings, home size, insulation and location.

It takes a lot of power to heat homes, and this increased energy consumption can lead to higher-than-normal bills. For example, if it is 90 degrees outside and you want to cool your home to 72, that is a difference of 18 degrees. Meanwhile, if it is 30 degrees outside and you want to warm your home to 68, that is a difference of 38 degrees. The wider the temperature difference, the harder your system works.

Resources to track usage and manage bills

  • Entergy’s Bill Toolkitis a one-stop resource connecting customers to tools and information to better manage their energy bills. The toolkit offers guidance on tracking energy usage, understanding bill projections, and accessing payment assistance options. Key resources include:

Entergy Arkansas helps customers stay warm and save money this winter /news/entergy-arkansas-helps-customers-stay-warm-and-save-money-this-winter Sat, 21 Dec 2024 07:40:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-helps-customers-stay-warm-and-save-money-this-winter/ LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – In preparation for the colder weather months ahead, Entergy Arkansas has taken measures in advance to ensure we’re winter-ready.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, a developing La Niña is expected to persist through the winter season causing a warmer and drier season in our service area. Despite these predictions, Arkansas weather remains unpredictable, and Entergy Arkansas will be ready for any extreme weather that may affect our state.

Entergy Arkansas crews have performed a significant review of our preparedness and protections against extreme conditions. This includes developing a comprehensive plan to protect our generation, transmission and distribution systems from extreme cold. We have implemented unique readiness plans for each of our power generation resources that include insulating critical equipment and diligently testing protections based on historical operating experience. Our transmission team follows a specialized seasonal readiness program that includes inspection and maintenance of critical lines and their associated breakers, transformers and substation distribution feeders going to generation/natural gas facilities. Entergy Arkansas crews have inspected critical systems and infrastructure across the grid in advance of colder temperatures in order to maintain reliability and resiliency.

Our winter readiness work follows the recommendations of The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and is in compliance with their standards. In addition, Entergy Arkansas employees recently participated in a winter readiness exercise that included situational drills and tabletop discussions for training and awareness of lessons learned and best practices for winter storm response. In 2021, a winter storm brought sub-zero temperatures, ice accumulation and record snowfall totals across the southern part of the U.S. While other states experienced challenges, the Arkansas Public Service Commission concluded that Entergy Arkansas and its grid “performed well from an operational perspective during the February 2021 event,” ably handling related outages and power restoration efforts.

Vegetation Management

  • The risk of falling tree limbs and branches is a leading cause of power outages during winter weather. Entergy Arkansas is proactively identifying and mitigating problem areas by taking steps year-round to maintain and control vegetation across our service area. Crews have completed the annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact of fallen trees or branches following a storm. Prior to storms impacting our area, vegetation crews perform pre-storm patrols of circuits to mitigate any imminent threats within the right of way. Our year-round storm preparations include our comprehensive vegetation management program and the targeted “ground to sky” vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would typically have been above the power line. Our crews also use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help predict when trimming may be needed.

Prepare for cold weather by maximizing energy efficiency

When colder temperatures arrive in the state, heating systems will start running full blast, causing a spike in energy usage. However, staying warm and comfortable doesn’t have to come at the cost of high energy bills. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can improve its energy efficiency and keep costs down throughout the colder months.

Air leaks and inefficient HVAC systems can lead to an additional $400 in home energy costs each year. Rather than cranking up the thermostat as temperatures drop, try these affordable or even free tips to reduce your energy use and save money.

Keep heating costs low all season long by taking these tips to improve your home’s energy efficiency:

  • Use solar energy:Open curtains on the south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat the home and close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.
  • Insulate drafty windows:Use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet on a frame or tape clear plastic film to the inside of window frames and make sure the plastic is sealed tightly to the frame to help reduce infiltration.
  • Adjust the thermostat:When you are home and awake, set the thermostat as low as is comfortable, but when you are asleep or out of the house, turn the thermostat back to save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Find and seal leaks:Seal air leaks around utility cut-throughs for pipes and recessed lights in insulated ceilings, and unfinished spaces behind cupboards and closets.
  • Maintain heating systems:Schedule routine service for homeand replace furnace and heat pump filters once a month or as needed.
  • Reduce heat loss from the fireplace:Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning and check the seal on the fireplace flue damper and make it as snug as possible.

By following these simple steps, you can stay warm and comfortable all winter long while keeping your energy bills under control.

We also offer free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment. Visitentergy.com/energyefficiencyfor more information.

Here’s how to stay warm while conserving energy usage this winter /news/heres-how-stay-warm-while-conserving-energy-usage-winter Tue, 09 Jan 2024 00:36:00 +0000 /blog-post/heres-how-stay-warm-while-conserving-energy-usage-winter/ Manage your electricity usage by implementing these energy efficiency practices

Little Rock, Ark. – Winter has arrived here in the Natural State, kicking heaters and energy consumption into high gear. Entergy Arkansas wants customers to stay warm while managing their energy usage and costs, offering these helpful hints to make your home more energy efficient.

Heating costs can account for more than 50 percent of a customer’s monthly energy usage. Instead of cranking up the thermostat when the temperatures drop, take these free or low-cost steps to remain comfortable and save energy and money on your utility bills.

Prepare for winter weather

Keep heating costs low all season long by taking these tips to improve your home’s energy efficiency:

  • Seal air leaks: Use caulk or weatherstripping around doors, windows and any location where there may be a path between the inside and outside.
  • Adjust the thermostat:¬†Set the thermostat to 68 degrees during winter months, and dress in layers to stay warm. Each degree above 68 can increase your energy bill by about 3 percent.
  • Conserve hot water:¬†Set your hot water heater’s thermostat to 120 degrees, or the medium setting. Wrap electric water heaters with water heater blankets, which can be found at home improvement stores.
  • Keep doors and windows closed: Constant traffic will let out warm air, forcing your heater to work harder to keep the room at a set temperature.
  • Ensure fans are turning the right way: Fans should be run at a low speed clockwise during the winter to prevent the cold air from blowing down on you.
  • Replace air filters: Dirty filters make your heating system work harder. Replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Use sunlight to your advantage: During the day, open your curtains and blinds to let in the warm sunlight. Close them at night to reduce heat loss.

We also offer free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment. Visit entergy.com/energyefficiency for more information.

Little Rock, Ark.– Cooler temps are starting to arrive in Arkansas with colder weather possible over the holidays and into the new year.¬†Even in areas where extremely¬†cold temperatures are not persistent, it’s still important to be ready for¬†freezing and inclement weather, which can move in quickly.¬†Arkansas is prepared for winter temperatures and wants customers to be ready as well.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s , El Nino will remain in place across the winter season for the first time in four years. The expected results will be wetter and cooler winter months this year, bringing much-needed drought relief to our service area. Temperatures overall are expected to be a few degrees cooler this winter.¬† ¬†

Entergy Arkansas is prepared for winter weather

Last year, January and February brought major winter weather events to parts of our service area, with high winds, freezing rains, and ice accumulation. February and December of 2022 saw similar conditions, and the winter season of 2021 saw in more than 30 years.

While weather can be unpredictable, we remain storm ready no matter the season.

Entergy Arkansas has performed necessary winterization measures and other seasonal assessments on our power plants, transmission lines and facilities, and any other equipment and assets that can be affected by the cold. This includes inspecting and maintaining substations and transmission lines and testing equipment to identify any potential equipment performance issues.

When a weather threat arises, Entergy Arkansas ramps up support:

  • We use forecasts and computer models based on experience with previous storms to predict an estimated number and duration of outages that could possibly occur.
  • Based on those estimates, the company calls on restoration workers from around the country to restore power as safely and quickly as possible for our customers.
  • Entergy Arkansas continuously plans and improves the process of assessing damage, positioning personnel in the right place with the required materials to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.
  • We take steps to maintain and control vegetation across our service area, completing annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact from fallen trees or branches following a storm.

Staying safe in ice and snow /blog/staying-safe-in-ice-snow Sat, 05 Feb 2022 00:11:00 +0000 /staying-safe-in-ice-snow Winter weather has arrived in our service area, which presents several challenges to those who rarely experience snowy, icy conditions. From removing snow and ice to dressing appropriately and avoiding falls, winter safety should always be top of mind. Stay safe and warm this season with the following tips.

To stay warm:

  • Cover every part of your body — including your face — and wear layers of loose-fitting clothing to protect against frostbite and hypothermia. In cold weather, your body actually loses heat faster than it can produce it.
  • Stay inside when temperatures are dangerously cold. And remember that certain people are at higher risk than others, especially the elderly.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for any person whose body temperature falls below 95°F.

To get around safely:

  • Wear sensible footwear when streets and sidewalks are snow-covered and icy. Flat-soled shoes with treads — not smooth soles — make it easier to plant your entire foot securely on the surface, which improves balance. Water-resistant boots designed to protect your feet from the cold are also a good choice.
  • Walk slowly and take shorter steps in icy, snowy conditions. This allows for adequate reaction time if you suddenly encounter a slippery patch of pavement.
  • Wear bright clothing so others can see you in wintry conditions. Something as simple as a colorful scarf or hat can make a big difference.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. When walking, always look ahead to anticipate any change in conditions, such as a patch of ice or uneven pavement. Avoid using headphones that block out the sound of oncoming vehicles.

To remove ice and snow:

  • Take time to stretch before you start to shovel snow. This helps prevent injury, especially because you’ll be using muscles that may have been inactive for a while.
  • Avoid heavy lifting. A better approach is to push the snow off to the side because it requires less exertion, and that means less stress on your body.
  • Take water breaks. Just as you would during any physical activity, it helps you stay adequately hydrated. Periodic rests are a must, especially if you’re not accustomed to this type of intense activity.
  • Use a shovel with a long arm and a blade that’s somewhat flat. It will be easier on your back. Lifting heavy snow is never a good idea, but if you must, bend at the knees and let your legs do the work.

This winter, avoid accidents and stay warm by heeding these tips for staying safe in icy, snowy conditions.

Entergy Arkansas Responding to Outages from Winter Storm /news/entergy-arkansas-responding-outages-from-winter-storm Mon, 15 Feb 2021 13:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-responding-outages-from-winter-storm/ High demand on system slows restoration times

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Approximately 1,600 customers remained without power Sunday evening after about 7,000 were disrupted earlier in the day as winter weather blew across the state. Forecasts call for even more extreme temperatures, sleet, and snow this week, with an unprecedented demand for electricity likely.

“The current load forecasts are approaching an all-time winter peak, even greater than those experienced during the polar vortex of January 2019,” said Michael Considine, vice president of customer service. “This high demand for electricity poses unique obstacles when crews work to restore electricity when the power goes out.”

Colder than normal temperatures during the early morning and overnight hours can prompt a large number of customers to increase the heat used in their homes and therefore the demand, company officials said, which can cause voltage variations and repeated power disruptions.

If customers lose electricity, they can help with restore times by turning off major appliances and heating units. Once power is restored, customers should gradually power on appliances and heating systems to prevent a high level of instantaneous demand.

Entergy Arkansas also has procedures it must follow to prevent further damage to weather-ravaged equipment, which can affect when in the processa customer will be restored.

“Rather than simply energizing an entire power line all at once,” Considine said, “we must bring customers back online one section at a time to avoid damage to our system and possibly cause additional outages.”

The extremely cold temperatures for the service area are raising the potential for generation and transmission challenges for Entergy’s operating companies and its neighboring utilities.

“We ask you to be particularly mindful of your energy use during this extreme cold to help reduce the strain on the electric system by practicing safe energy conservation efforts,” Considine said.

Some ways customers can help us manage through this period:

  • Lower the central thermostat to 68 degrees or lower if possible.
  • Open blinds and draperies to let in warmth from the sun during the daytime.
  • Delay laundry, washing dishes, bathing and other non-essential uses of electricity until this appeal for conservation has ended.
  • Wash clothes with cold water, cook foods at the lowest possible setting and refrain from opening the oven door while baking.
  • Don’t allow warmed air to escape from the home.

If you lose power:

  • Stay away from downed power lines. You can’t tell from looking at them whether they are energized or not, so assume they are. Report them to 1-800-9OUTAGE.
  • Report your power outage online to Entergy Arkansas or call 1-800-9OUTAGE. If you report your outage by phone, trust the automated system. It works very well. There is no need to speak with a customer service representative to report an outage.
  • If you have a portable generator, use it safely. DO NOT run it in an enclosed space. If connecting to the whole house, do so only if the connection has been installed by a licensed electrician.
  • Do not open your refrigerator or freezer door. Food will stay cold much longer this way. If outside temperature is below freezing, consider placing food in an ice chest outside.
  • Stay clear of linemen as they work, for your safety and theirs.
