The summit focused on supporting Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed individuals. ALICE represents the growing number of families who earn a little more than the federal poverty level but still struggle to afford basic needs like food, housing, childcare transportation, health care and technology.

During the panel, Marsh emphasized Entergy’s commitment to assisting ALICE customers and communities across our service area of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Marsh shared the panel with Gianetta Jones, senior vice president and chief people officer for Coca-Cola Bottling Company. The panel discussion was moderated by LaMont Bryant, who heads Ethicon and Johnson & Johnson MedTech Research and Development.

Throughout the conversation, Marsh highlighted Entergy’s programs that help ALICE households and communities, including customer bill payment assistance and free tax preparation services, as well as volunteer support from the company’s 12,000 employees. Entergy uses data from ALICE reports in each state to partner with regulators and United Way affiliates in designing shareholder-funded bill assistance programs tailored for ALICE residents living in our service area. In total, these initiatives have provided $15 million in bill payment support to numerous ALICE households in the past two years.

Marsh also cited the Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC, as a crucial poverty reduction program, emphasizing that Entergy has made it a significant volunteer initiative since 2009.

“Each year, our employee volunteers collaborate with the IRS, United Way affiliates and nonprofits to provide free tax preparation services for our low-income customers living in our service area,” said Marsh. “Since this service began, we have helped 200,000 families access $300 million in EITC refunds. This impactful initiative highlights the importance of supporting and uplifting ALICE households in our communities.”

During the discussion, Marsh stressed the importance of advocating for the ALICE population, who are, at times, overlooked because they are living just above the federal poverty level but, when faced with a life-threatening accident or medical illness, they too must decide between paying for groceries, medicine or electricity.

Marsh emphasized the vital role businesses and corporations play in supporting ALICE households through education and advocacy on public policies at the local, state and federal levels. Supporting ALICE households aligns with our commitment to enhance the lives of our customers, employees and communities. By providing essential resources and assistance to ALICE families, Entergy aims to create a brighter future for everyone. Learn more about how we serve our communities.

To ensure a safe environment for volunteers and customers this tax season, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance centers are following virus-prevention protocols and promoting opportunities to assist customers virtually on the .

“Our partnering organizations and volunteers have done an extraordinary job of adjusting to COVID-19 and finding safer ways for volunteers to support the program,” said Amy Davidson, Entergy Mississippi senior customer service specialist.“Even when we didn’t have as many volunteer opportunities in Jackson, we were able to connect them to United Way organizations in Louisiana and north Mississippi to continue their support.”

Since 2009, Entergy has helped return $280 million to 160,000 residents throughout the company’s utility service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. In Mississippi, nearly 33,000 Entergy customers have received more than $71 million.

With the passage of the American Rescue Plan Act, qualifying customers stand to gain even more benefits this year with critical expansions of EITC and the Child Tax Credit.

“The VITA program was designed to be community-based and volunteer-driven,” said Ira E. Murray, president and CEO of United Way of the Capital Area. “Thus, volunteers are the lifeblood of what we do. We could not exist without the dedication of everyday people who devote months of service to ensure hard-working, EITC-eligible families receive free, high-quality service. VITA is about much more than tax preparation; it is an anti-poverty program, and our volunteers make it possible.”

“I love doing taxes, and I love helping people.”
– Robin Lewis, Entergy volunteer.

One of those volunteers is Robin Lewis, a senior scheduler for Entergy Nuclear who volunteers at the UWCA’s headquarters in downtown Jackson and online on the Get Your Refund website.

“I love doing taxes, and I love helping people,” Lewis said. “The tax software program is simple to use and has prompts that lead you through each section of the return. The testing software lets you practice before you help actual clients, and someone else reviews your work to make sure it’s OK. It’s much easier than people would think.”

Retiree Tim Ngau was encouraged by a former Entergy colleague to become a VITA volunteer a few years ago and found that it was a good match for his skills and interests.

“As someone who’s always prepared my own taxes, it seemed like something worthwhile to do with a relatively limited time commitment because of the deadline for filing taxes,” said Ngau, who volunteers at the Vicksburg campus of Hinds Community College. “It’s always gratifying to help people, and given their low incomes, they really don’t have the means to pay for professionalhelp.”

Volunteers receive training to become IRS-certified preparers and are provided materials before tax season to prepare for the certification test. Volunteers also at VITA sites, including greeters, site coordinators, interpreters and computer specialists.

“I would encourage anyone who desires giving back to the community to get involved with VITA at any capacity,” said Mae Robinson, a specialty clerk in Clinton who became a certified preparer in 2019 and began volunteering this year at Hinds Community College in Jackson.

“It’s particularly gratifying serving the population of clients at Hinds, which includes members of the community and employees of the Mississippi School for the Blind,” Robinson said. “Being able to serve knowing that my employer supports and encourages my volunteering makes it that much more satisfying.”

Entergy Mississippi employees and retirees are active volunteers in their communities. In 2020, they engaged in 13,500 hours of volunteer service valued at more than $367,000, on a variety of charitable causes.

Serving Our Most Vulnerable Customers /blog/serving-our-most-vulnerable-customers Mon, 30 Nov 2020 22:27:00 +0000 /serving-our-most-vulnerable-customers This is the time of year when we reflect and give thanks for what we have and look forward to new beginnings. Of course, the events of 2020 have made that a tall order for some.

From COVID-19 and nationwide protests for racial justice, to the multiple hurricanes that have affected our service territory, our communities have faced unprecedented challenges. However, as devastating and disruptive as these times are for everyone, those most heavily impacted are those living in poverty, (low-wage working families). These low-income, older adults and people with disabilities make up roughly 40%-50% of our customer base.

Our mission is to create sustainable value for our stakeholders: customers, employees, communities and owners. Our future is inextricably tied to theirs, and as we progress, so should they. That’s why Entergy is committed to supporting our most vulnerable customers.

Two decades ago, we revised our customer service policies, placing greater emphasis on our customers’ fundamental needs, and launched our low-income customer initiative.

In the 20 years since, we have introduced several highly effective and innovative ways to benefit low-income customers. We established the Entergy Charitable Foundation, The Power to Care and , and worked to help customers claim their during tax season.

As a result, our low-income customer initiative has helped power the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. We not only keep their power on and gas flowing, but work to put them on the path to economic self-sufficiency. These programs have helped our customers reduce debt, increase their assets, improve their credit ratings, become homeowners, and access opportunities for education and job training.

As we mark the 20th anniversary of our low-income customer initiative, we know the fight isn’t over. We can only become the premier utility if our most vulnerable customers have the resources they need during future crises like those we have seen in 2020. To this end, we have renewed our commitment to serve low-income customers for the next 20 years by expanding our poverty solutions to help more customers in need.

All our stakeholders benefit from our commitments to our most vulnerable customers. As they rise, we all rise, something we can all be thankful for.

Thank you,

Two Decades of Progress

Entergy has helped power the lives of thousands of customers in the 20 years since the company launched its low-income customer initiative:
