As new families and businesses move into Southeast Texas, Entergy Texas is proposing two major transmission projects to help ensure the region has the infrastructure it needs to grow—and to keep the lights on during everyday use and extreme weather.

The company recently filed two proposals with the Public Utility Commission of Texas: the, more commonly known as SETEX, and the. These transmission lines will improve how electricity moves across Southeast Texas—boosting capacity for new homes and businesses, reducing the risk of outages, and supporting job creation and investment in the region. They’ll also enhance grid resiliency by adding geographic diversity—helping the system better withstand extreme weather—and ensure compliance with federal reliability standards set by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

If approved, the SETEX project would add a new 500-kV transmission line to the western portion of Entergy Texas’ 27-county service area, connecting new substations in Newton and Montgomery counties and spanning up to 160 miles. The Cypress to Legend line would span up to 49 miles between Hardin and Jefferson counties. While there are multiple routes and route segments under consideration, the final route for each project will be determined by the PUCT as part of the regulatory review process.

“As the communities we serve continue to grow, we have a responsibility to grow with them,” said Eliecer Viamontes, CEO of Entergy Texas. “These investments are about preparing Southeast Texas for what’s next—more families, more businesses, more opportunities. Our goal is to build a resilient grid that customers can count on and a stronger foundation for the region’s future.”

Entergy Texas operates within the, a regional transmission organization that oversees energy planning across 15 U.S. states and Manitoba, Canada. Both the SETEX and Cypress to Legend projects were identified through MISO’s long-range planning process as critical to ensuring reliable and cost-effective service as demand continues to grow. If approved by the PUCT, Cypress to Legend is expected to be in service by 2028, and SETEX is expected to follow in 2029.

These projects are key components of Entergy Texas’ Southeast Texas ϳԹ Plan, also known as STEP Ahead. STEP Ahead is a long-term strategy to power economic growth, strengthen reliability and support vibrant communities across the region. The comprehensive plan includes investments in resiliency, generation, transmission, and distribution to serve one of the fastest-growing areas of the country. Entergy New Orleans performs transmission upgrades to bolster grid reliability /blog/entergy-new-orleans-performs-transmission-upgrades-to-bolster-grid-reliability Thu, 05 Jun 2025 21:09:27 +0000 /?p=18025 Entergy New Orleans is committed to providing reliable service to our customers by investing in transmission projects that help strengthen the electric grid and reduce the risk of outages. Recent efforts in Mid-City, Gentilly, and New Orleans East reflect that commitment with crews completing major upgrades to our transmission and distribution lines.

To accomplish this, Entergy New Orleans deployed a highly specialized bare-hand crew to complete the work—an elite team of linemen trained to safely repair high-voltage, energized transmission lines. Keeping the lines energized during upgrades prevents power outages and ensures substations continue operating under normal, stable conditions.

The team recently completed work on a major transmission line in New Orleans, replacing older insulators on 26 towers with stronger, more modern equipment. Working in coordination with distribution and vegetation management teams, they also replaced aging wooden cross arms and cleared overgrown vegetation. This collaborative approach enhances both transmission and distribution reliability across the New Orleans service area.

Additional work is underway in New Orleans East, where the bare-hand crew is replacing insulators on several water-crossing circuits. The crew is scheduled to complete critical upgrades on the Michoud–Front transmission line crossing over Lake Pontchartrain. This line provides a vital interconnection between Entergy and Cleco and serves as an emergency power source for the New Orleans grid. These enhancements will significantly strengthen the electrical grid and improve regional reliability.

“These types of upgrades help prevent potential issues and keep the power flowing safely,” said Kenyon Stipe, transmission line supervisor at Entergy New Orleans. “Upgrading our equipment reduces the chance of outages and helps ensure reliable service for our customers.”

This work would not be possible without the expertise and collaboration of key personnel and partners. North Houston Pole Line provided experienced contract support. Linh Tran, Grid Engineer; Josh Rollins, Transmission OC; Kenyon Stipe Sr., Transmission Line Supervisor; and Frank Morse, Senior Manager of Transmission Lines, all played vital roles in planning and execution. The Tulane Network also contributed valuable support to the project’s success.

By completing this work with energized lines and minimizing disruption, Entergy New Orleans continues to meet its promise of delivering safe, reliable power to its customers.

Entergy New Orleans launches phase 1 of Resilience projects to harden the grid /stormcenter/entergy-new-orleans-launches-phase-1-of-resilience-projects-to-harden-the-grid Thu, 15 May 2025 15:16:13 +0000 /?p=13195 At Entergy New Orleans, our commitment to strengthening the electric grid and protecting our communities took a significant step forward as we officially launched the first phase of projects of our city-wide Resilience Plan. Together with the New Orleans City Council, Entergy leaders held a press conference to mark the beginning of the citywide initiative to fortify our infrastructure against extreme weather and ensure faster power restoration when outages occur.

This first phase includes 63 critical infrastructure improvement projects that will be completed over the next two years, with no impact to customer bills. This $100 million investment is designed to safeguard homes, businesses and essential services from the effects of extreme weather events, helping to make our city safer, stronger and more resilient.

Initial work is underway in District E, where crews and contractors have begun installing stronger, storm-hardened poles designed to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour. These upgrades will significantly improve reliability for residents in this area and will help reduce the time it takes to restore service after a severe storm.

“The impact of stronger and more severe weather makes investing in resilience critical to the future of our city,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “This first phase of grid hardening investments will be made throughout the city creating an environment for businesses to invest, grow and thrive here.”

These grid upgrades will be happening across all districts, with crews working throughout the spring and summer to strengthen nearly 3,100 structures. We’ll be hosting community-focused events in each district to share information about the projects and connect with residents.

“These storm hardening projects are critical to create a stronger power grid in New Orleans. Since Hurricane Ida, I’ve been leading the Council’s legislative items for these projects and while this took much work and out of the box solutions, we were able to ensure the majority of the costs were kept off ratepayers’ bills,” said Council Vice President Helena Moreno. “I appreciate Entergy New Orleans CEO Deanna Rodriguez for working directly with me to ensure the Utility was meeting the Council and the community’s needs with these projects and look forward to this level of continued partnership for future projects to come.”

“This is a step in the right direction,” said City Councilmember Oliver Thomas. “And why is it especially important for the upgrades to be here first? We know the direction of a lot of our storms or weather events come from that direction.”

We are proud to work alongside the New Orleans City Council and community partners to implement this plan. Our Resilience strategy is more than a construction initiative. It’s a promise to our customers that we are proactively working to protect the communities we serve.

Together, we’re building a stronger New Orleans—resilient in the face of storms and built to thrive for generations to come.

Entergy Mississippi selects new power generation site, prioritizes community needs /news/entergy-mississippi-selects-new-power-generation-site-prioritizes-community-needs Sat, 12 Apr 2025 03:49:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-mississippi-selects-new-power-generation-site-prioritizes-community-needs/ Company shares early insights to meet future demands

JACKSON, Miss. – Entergy Mississippi is prioritizing community needs, while preparing to meet future energy demands. Company leaders shared early plans to build new power generation and welcomed input from residents near a selected site on West County Line Road in Ridgeland, during a town hall Friday.

Initial insights include the millions in cost-saving benefits for all customers, since the location is near robust transmission lines, supporting grid interconnection. Additionally, investment in new technology, like an advanced combined-cycle combustion turbine natural gas plant, would produce more power from the same fuel and lower costs.

The new power station would also benefit the community and surrounding region by bringing in temporary construction jobs and full-time positions.

“Planned power generation retirements and growth across our service area is driving us to think ahead, so we can continue serving reliable, efficient and affordable power to our customers. While it’s very early in the process, we’re connecting with the community. Our goal is to ensure the project considers their needs, including integrating the facility into the surrounding area with the goal of minimizing visual impact,” said Robbie Kemp, vice president of customer service.

“We understand that residents have concerns, and the safety of our communities and employees has always been our leading value. It’s why our local power generation fleet meets or exceeds the EPA and MDEQ health requirements and abide by noise ordinances. This new site will be no different,” said Jeremy Vanderloo, vice president of business operations.

In October, the company broke ground on a similar plant to the one proposed, in Greenville, Mississippi. ճwill be a 754-megawatt facility; represents a $1.2 billion investment; and will employ about 21 full-time personnel once it comes online.

Representatives from the company will use input from Friday’s town hall to inform the developing power station plans.

Entergy grid remains resilient through historic cold weather peak usage /stormcenter/entergy-grid-remains-resilient-through-historic-cold-weather-peak-usage Thu, 06 Feb 2025 22:24:29 +0000 /?p=13518 During the week of Jan. 19, an arctic blast brought record-breaking low temperatures and historic snowfall to the South. This once-in-a-lifetime winter storm blanketed a large swath of our service area, bringing up to a foot of snow in the New Orleans French Quarter and covering Mississippi’s beaches, as well. Throughout the cold weather, Entergy’s grid recorded peak electricity usage, remaining reliable while lineworkers braved difficult conditions to restore power following outages caused by snow, ice, sleet and freezing temperatures.

Meeting the demands of historic electricity usage during arctic blast

Entergy customers used more electricity during the January winter storm than ever before in cold-weather months, surpassing the peak winter usage recorded in the storms of January 2024. Entergy Arkansas, Louisiana, New Orleans and Texas service areas all recorded new high peak usage records, while Entergy Mississippi neared its record of peak usage.

As cold weather drove increased energy usage, Entergy closely monitored our equipment and weather conditions, taking appropriate steps to ensure reliable delivery of power to our customers. This included working closely with MISO, the electric grid operator for the central United States, to monitor grid conditions and prepare generators accordingly. Despite the record-breaking power usage,Entergy’s fleet maintained production margins and provided enough generation to meet the energy load throughout the storm.

Storm ready: responding to winter weather events

While the January weather event did cause localized outages, crews quickly and safely restored power to just over 13,000 customers who lost service across Entergy’s service territory throughout the three day-event while navigating freezing temperatures, icy roads and hazardous working conditions.

The winter storm most heavily impacted Louisiana, bringing unique challenges like downed tree limbs and the strain of cold-load pickup, an increase in energy demand as power is restored to areas impacted by extreme cold. Despite these challenges, the company’s systems and teams proved resilient, minimizing the impact on customers across the state. Just two weeks prior, Entergy Arkansas swiftly restored power to its customers during awith snow accumulations of nearly 15 inches in some areas and more than a quarter-inch of ice in others according to the National Weather Service.

Entergy stays storm ready with extensivewinter weather readiness measuresand remains prepared to respond to the next weather event.

Clean air vacuum breaker installed in Jennings as part of achieving company sustainability goals /blog/clean-air-vacuum-breaker-installed-in-jennings-as-part-of-achieving-company-sustainability-goals Wed, 11 Dec 2024 20:50:00 +0000 /?p=13278 In early November, Entergy Louisiana’s specialized substation technicians installed and energized a high-voltage clean-air vacuum breaker at the Jennings substation. This new equipment is part of the first few installations for Entergy’s four-state service area and the first installment of this size in the country for the manufacturing partner.

In our efforts to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, Entergy is deploying multiple sustainable solutions from building solar generation and working to upgrade equipment like circuit breakers and cleaner technology.

The all-new circuit breakeris a 145kV high-voltage clean air vacuum breaker that replaced a high-voltage oil circuit breaker used to control the flow of power on the electric transmission system. The equipment uses a clean air mix of 80% nitrogen and 20% oxygen for its insulating medium rather than sulfur hexafluoride, a potent greenhouse gas. Energized November 6, 2024, the gas-free breaker is a pilot project we will monitor to understand how this kind of technology can help reduce our greenhouse gas footprint and emissions.

“Upgrading our electric grid and testing new advanced technology will not only help us reach sustainability goals, but also offers the best solutions to the communities we serve,” said Jason Willis, Entergy Louisiana vice president of reliability. “we’re excited to be at the forefront of innovation now and in the future.”
