When we were alerted that St. Mary’s Dominican High School was unable to receive power due to internal electrical issues, our team quickly responded to support their swift return to normal operations.

The school’s administration had previously been advised by their electrician that the secondary wiring on campus was deteriorating. Plans were in place to address the issue over the summer break, as repairs would require a temporary power outage. However, on Monday evening, the wiring failed resulting in a loss of power to the entire campus.

The next morning Entergy crews were on-site to assess the situation and determine how we could assist. Recognizing the urgency, Entergy New Orleans took immediate action – expediting the order and delivery of a new transformer, setting a new pole, installing updated wiring, and preparing the transformer pad. All of the work was completed within 48 hours, enabling the school’s electrical contractor to begin replacing the secondary wiring.

Through close coordination with Dominican High School and the office of Councilmember Joe Giarrusso, power was restored to the school on Thursday morning.

“We recognized how important it was to act fast,” said Nyka Scott, vice president, customer service and economic development at Entergy New Orleans. “When schools are affected, we know time is critical. After the school’s equipment broke down, our team worked proactively to reduce downtime and support students’ return to the classroom as quickly and safely as possible.”

“The St. Mary’s Dominican High School community extends its sincere gratitude to Entergy for its prompt response, mobilization, and collaboration in securing the necessary equipment and restoring power to our campus,” said Dr. Cynthia Thomas, president at St. Mary’s Dominican High School. “Their efforts were instrumental in ensuring the successful completion of our school year.“

“A school’s doors being open is critical but maybe even more so at year end,” said Councilman Joe Giarusso. “When Dominican experienced a power issue, Entergy expedited receipt and installation of equipment to ensure the school and kids finish the year on the right note.”

Entergy New Orleans is committed to delivering reliable service and responding promptly to challenges. We will continue to actively collaborate with local leaders to ensure timely, effective solutions that support the communities we serve.

Entergy forges pathway for future engineers /blog/entergy-forges-pathway-for-future-engineers Tue, 15 Apr 2025 16:57:11 +0000 /?p=13643 For many team members, the phrase “always learning” is a mantra in most daily conversations, but seeing this value being taught to the future engineers of tomorrow is an important one to witness. Recently, students from the Madison Central High School Academy of Engineering were able to visit Entergy facilities and take full advantage of their partnership with the company.

“The partnership between MCHS and our company began in 2018,” said Paul “Scotty” Campbell, transmission control center training supervisor. “I saw that there was a need to develop the talent in this area and show them why they should come work at Entergy.”

This realization led to the establishment of a partnership that would lead hearts and minds of young engineering interests at Madison Central High School to see that amazing career fields are right in their backyard.

The MCHS Academy of Engineering has a three-week learning unit with Entergy to help students understand how engineering plays a role in their daily lives. About 20 students were given the opportunity to put their learned knowledge into action and see firsthand how all parts of electricity work, including clean nuclear power. One student shared, “Seeing the schematics for the power grid was really neat since I’ve been exposed to that in digital electronics.” Another said, “I finally understand the process of getting electricity from fossil fuels to a home, and about all of the people required to get it accomplished.”

“Career readiness is an essential skill that is needed on day one to get a job,” says Rosalyn Howard, Entergy program manager for Diversity and Workplace Strategies. Howard served as the organizer for this event and said, “There must be a focus through stakeholder engagement, meaning that we are sharing knowledge with the community and nurturing the future workforce.”

The students were also able to gain valuable insight from our Chief Nuclear Officer Kimberly Cook-Nelson as well.

“We spend a lot of time at Entergy focusing on volunteering in local schools,” she said. “We start in the middle schools, then continue through high schools, trade schools and colleges to help people see and know what a career at Entergy looks like.”

As part of the program, students were able to visit the Hinds Power Plant, Transmission Control Center and Transmission headquarters. “Seeing real-world applications of power generation, transmission and control helped bridge the gap between classroom concepts and industry practices”, said Michelle Robinson, academy director and science department chair at MCHS. “Thank you to Entergy for providing such a comprehensive and impactful experience.”

The event welcomed more than 2,100 high school students from over 20 schools across the Greater New Orleans region. With participation from more than 65 employers and industry-training providers, the expo introduced students to well-paying, in-demand job opportunities in our region.

Entergy engaged students with hands-on demonstrations designed to educate and inspire. The company’s Arcs and Sparks safety demonstration captivated attendees by illustrating the power and dangers of electricity. Students also gained firsthand experience with lineman gear, learned how meters measure energy consumption, and explored how electricity is generated.

“YouthForce NOLA is a great partner for us,” said Sumesh Aurora, program manager, workforce strategy at Entergy. “We are introducing students in the New Orleans area to various types of careers, including those in the energy sector. This partnership helps build a strong pipeline of future professionals in energy and engineering and ensures our city will have a skilled workforce for years to come.”

The career expo provided a valuable opportunity for students to explore industries and professions that are not always covered in traditional classroom settings. Daniya Thomas, a freshman at McMain High School, found Entergy’s Arcs and Sparks demonstration particularly eye-opening. “I did not know that releasing balloons could cause that much damage,” she said. “Going forward, I will make sure that my friends and family know the dangers that releasing balloons can have on our power lines.”

This event broadened students’ awareness of diverse career opportunities within the energy sector and beyond. By supporting initiatives like Career Expo, Entergy underscores our commitment to empowering the next generation and strengthening the future workforce.

The year-long project, which includes more than two miles of new distribution lines and enhancing substation equipment, is expected to bring improved stability to the area, providing farmers and residents with the reliable power needed to operate essential irrigation systems during the hot summer months.

These upgrades represent a proactive investment in the community’s future, helping farmers, residents and local businesses thrive with expanded electrical stability. In total, Entergy Arkansas has invested more than $12 million in new upgrades and has rebuilt more than a mile of existing distribution lines allowing the company to support increased load demands and provide consistent power delivery, even during high-demand periods.

The upgrades include a new larger 40 megavolt-amperes (MVA) transformer to help create a stronger network. Installing a larger transformer allows for a greater capacity to deliver electrical power, meaning it can supply more electricity to a building or area without experiencing voltage drops or overloading the existing system. Additional feeders were also added to help with switching power to other circuits in case an outage does occur.

“Supporting our local agricultural community is a priority for us,” said Whitney Rial, customer service manager for Entergy Arkansas. “By strengthening our system, we’re making sure residents have dependable electricity, particularly during the irrigation season. Our upgrades will minimize power disruptions, which can be costly to our customers and have a significant impact on crop productivity.”

With the growing need to maintain reliability as energy demand increases, Entergy Arkansas is making key strategic investments across the state. Creating a stronger power grid is crucial for the growing electrical demands in the Harrisburg area, where agriculture serves as one of the major focuses of the local economy. Local farmers have expressed relief and appreciation for the commitment Entergy Arkansas has made in addressing these infrastructure needs, recognizing the importance of uninterrupted electricity in maintaining successful and sustainable agricultural practices.

“We are grateful to the city of Harrisburg, other utilities in the area, residents, businesses and farmers for their patience as we have spent the year working together to build a stronger network and stronger community,” said Rial.

Residents in the area should begin seeing the benefits immediately as a result of these new upgrades providing reliable, efficient and innovative energy solutions. The project is expected to have long-term benefits for the Harrisburg community, developing stability for years to come.

Entergy New Orleans powers sustainability /stormcenter/entergy-new-orleans-powers-sustainability Thu, 21 Nov 2024 22:47:00 +0000 /entergy-new-orleans-powers-sustainability Entergy New Orleans is committed to providing our customers with reliable, safe, and consistent service, even during challenging times. With the recent of our Accelerated Resilience Plan, we are taking a big step towards hardening the electric grid and upgrading the city’s infrastructure to ensure lights stay on longer and power can be restored faster.

Powering businesses through outages

Our commitment to resilience and reliability goes beyond words—it’s visible in our substantial investments, strategic partnerships, and in our continuous innovation. As storms evolve, so does our approach to ensuring businesses have access to reliable and safe power solutions. In 2022, Entergy Louisiana launched its Power Through program which offers tailored backup generation solutions that safeguard business operations.

By facilitating the installation, operation, and maintenance of natural gas-fired generators at customer facilities, we ensure businesses are well-prepared to seamlessly “power through” prolonged outages. With an affordable monthly fee added to the customer’s bill, the Power Through program offers customers enhanced reliability without financial strain.

In non-emergency situations, the generators can be used to counterbalance high levels of demand and allows Entergy to deliver power to our customers at a reduced rate. Through shared costs and customized solutions tailored to each business’s unique needs, we have made backup power generation both easy and affordable.

Powering our local community

In addition to providing business solutions, Entergy New Orleans has prioritized community preparedness through our Generator Readiness Project. This initiative prepares critical city-owned facilities for storm impact by staging temporary backup generators at key locations. Collaborating closely with city officials, we have equipped 16 sites, including New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) sites, public libraries, and community facilities with manual transfer switches for rapid generator connection.

“This project is an important part of building a safe and resilient city,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “We have worked with City leaders and community partners to ensure that we are taking every step to prepare New Orleans for major storms. The 16 generator-ready sites serve as an important resource providing shelter and giving residents a place to get essential supplies and to receive critical services during extended outages following a storm.”

With the advance staging of generators along with the preparation of natural gas for post-storm fuel supply, we can ensure the emergency sites remain operational during and after severe weather events. Through an investment of $900,000, collected through electric and gas rates, our Generator Readiness Project reinforces our support of the emergency response infrastructure and our commitment to providing safe and reliable electric services.

To sustain these initiatives, Entergy New Orleans maintains a power delivery system of approximately 16,100 circuit miles of transmission lines and over 106,000 miles of distribution lines. Our extensive and complex infrastructure is designed to meets the current needs of the community and the demands of the future.

We Power Life

Together, these programs highlight our dedication to supporting both the businesses and the community we serve. With a powerful combination of preparedness, customer-centric services, and an expansive power delivery network, Entergy New Orleans is shaping a more resilient future—one that prioritizes reliable, accessible power whenever and wherever it’s needed most.

By investing in clean energy alternatives, we are not only meeting the energy needs of today, but also ensuring a cleaner, healthier future.”

As we look to the future, we remain committed to leading the charge in clean energy generation. Our focus on addressing climate issues has placed us among the cleanest generation fleets in the country. Through our investments in renewable resources and innovative technologies, we will continue to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to the communities we serve.

During Hurricane Francine, our plants underscore the resiliency and strength of nuclear power /stormcenter/during-hurricane-francine-our-plants-underscore-resiliency-strength-nuclear-power-123696273 Fri, 13 Sep 2024 04:22:00 +0000 /during-hurricane-francine-our-plants-underscore-resiliency-strength-nuclear-power-123696273 Entergy’s Waterford 3 Nuclear Generating Station and River Bend Station in Louisiana and Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Mississippi operated at full power during Hurricane Francine, which once again shows the resiliency and strength of nuclear power.

I want to praise our nuclear professionals – and those across our company — who focused on in-depth preparation, strong teamwork and unparalleled collaboration, with the safety of our folks and our communities being at the core of every decision related to the storm. While we are still doing safety walkdowns, damage assessments and checking on our team members, our facilities in Louisiana and Mississippi performed exceptionally well.

While our plants stayed on the grid during the event, producing power for our customers, our people also shined. Their nuclear professionalism is impressive and appreciated, but not surprising. While power outages remain across southeast Louisiana and Mississippi, Entergy’s utility crews continue to assess damages and work to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.
