LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – For the 10th year in a row, Entergy Arkansas and the Little Rock International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Local 34 have come together to provide winter coats to elementary school students for “Operation Warm.” Through this partnership, hundreds of students in the Little Rock School District received new coats Wednesday, just before the students’ winter break begins.

Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures high-quality coats and shoes for children in need. The coats are designed and manufactured by the nonprofit to be long-wearing, water repellent and machine washable, with a warm fleece lining, deep pockets to keep little hands warm even without gloves, and detachable hoods. They come in sizes 2T to adult. Since 1998, the organization has provided more than 6 million coats to kids in need across the United States.

The IAFF Union 34 began working with the national nonprofit several years ago after seeing a group of young children shivering at a school bus stop near their firehouse.

“Helping people is our job, but it’s also part of who we are,” said IAFF Union 34 President Matthew Stallings. “We work year-round to support this program, and the last few weeks have been a concerted effort with Entergy and the Little Rock School District to determine the needs of the students and organize the coats for distribution. It’s worth any effort, though, to see those smiling faces as we do what we can to help children in our community weather the cold.”

With the support of a $10,000 grant from Entergy Arkansas and payroll-deduction contributions from members of IAFF Local 34, firefighters purchased 800 new coats for children at Western Hills and Carver STEAM Magnet Elementaries, as well as Romine Early Childhood Center.

“Since 2015, nearly 6,000 students across the Little Rock School District have benefited from the generosity of Union 34 firefighters and Entergy, said LRSD Superintendent Jermall Wright. “We are deeply grateful for their continued dedication and investment in our community. Their support is not just a donation, but a demonstration of the vital role community partnerships play in our mission to impact the lives of our students.”

“Entergy Arkansas works with community partners year-round and across the state to better our communities through grants and volunteerism, and this event is the ultimate example of our commitment to “power life” in every community we serve,” said Laura Landreaux, Entergy Arkansas president and CEO. “We are grateful to the Little Rock Fire Fighters Union 34 members who spearhead the effort with individual donations and coordinate the logistics of the coat donations and delivery. Helping meet the needs of children in this way is both an honor and a joy.”

Entergy Arkansas announces hazmat response grant for Lake Catherine and Hamilton /news/entergy-arkansas-announces-hazmat-response-grant-for-lake-catherine-and-hamilton Wed, 18 Dec 2024 08:06:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-announces-hazmat-response-grant-for-lake-catherine-and-hamilton/ Positive downstream effects expected on Ouachita River

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy has awarded more than $160,000 to Lake Hamilton Fire & Rescue (LHFR) for an environmental grant that will allow the department to contain and cleanup future hazmat incidents on Lake Hamilton and Lake Catherine while mitigating spill over from Remmel Dam into the Ouachita River.

LHFR used the grant to purchase a rescue and response boat, absorbent booms, diving equipment and other hazmat materials and supplies. Some of the materials, most notably the boat, provided the backdrop to today’s announcement event where Entergy Arkansas Senior Plant Manager Braxton Bennett and LHFR Chief Doug Davey both spoke about the grant that is already having an impact on the popular central Arkansas lakes.

“Most of our calls for service on the water require some sort of hazmat mitigation,” said Davey. “Recently, we deployed oil booms and mats to contain and soak up fluids from a front-end loader that rolled into Lake Catherine. Last year, there was large oil sheen on Lake Hamilton that no near-by agency could mitigate due to a lack of resources. However, through Entergy’s generosity, we are now equipped to handle water cleanups and will be able to help preserve and maintain our beautiful lakes for years to come.”

LHFR, established in 1958, is the sole emergency fireboat response unit stationed on the 7,460-acred Lake Hamilton and the 1,940-acred Lake Catherine. An Entergy Arkansas employee who lives in the LHFR’s response territory and was aware that the department lacked the resources to handle hazmat incidents encouraged Davey to apply for the grant through LHFR’s foundation.

“Not only are Lake Hamilton and Catherine beautiful destinations for tourists, but they are practically in the backyards of many Entergy Arkansas employees. A local employee recognized a need in their community and helped identify a solution,” said Entergy Arkansas CEO and President Laura Landreaux. “By investing in the communities where we live and work, we are investing in the quality of life in Arkansas and in this situation, helping maintain the beauty of some of its destination waterways.

According to census records, more than 2,031 residents live on Lake Hamilton and 320 on Lake Catherine – additionally home to Lake Catherine State Park. An estimated 6-million tourists visit Hot Springs alone every year, with the surrounding lakes being popular destinations.

This grant award is based on the organization’s alignment with Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund philanthropic focus on environmental stewardship. By providing support through grants like these, Entergy Arkansas seeks to equip the Lake Hamilton Fire Department and other nonprofit partners and service groups with the resources needed to improve the quality of life for those it serves.

The Environmental Initiatives Fund is supported solely from shareholder profit and not Entergy Arkansas customer dollars. For 24 years in a row, shareholders have supported $44 million in environmental grants. Additionally, he utility also has a robust employee volunteer program and community engagement focus on helping customers with the most critical needs. NEW ORLEANS – With just 59 days until Super Bowl LIX, the New Orleans Super Bowl LIX Host Committee, NFL Foundation, Entergy, the New Orleans Saints, Ochsner Health, Venture Global, United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and the NOLA Coalition announced the distribution of more than $3.5 million in grants to 65 nonprofit organizations in the Greater New Orleans region.

, the official Super Bowl LIX Legacy Grant Program, is designed to provide lasting support for local organizations working in key areas such as economic development, education, workforce training, youth development, health and wellness, and equity and inclusion. The program is committed to creating a meaningful legacy in New Orleans long after the city hosts its record-tying 11th Super Bowl on Feb. 9, 2025.

During the event, the Super Bowl LIX Host Committee, led by the New Orleans Saints and the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation, and its partner organizations highlighted the importance of giving back to the community through the Host Committee theme of “It’s what we do.”

“Super Bowl LIX is about more than just a game,” said Gayle Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints and long-time philanthropist. “It’s about showing up for our city, supporting our neighbors, and ensuring that we leave a positive, lasting legacy in the community. This program is part of what we do – to create meaningful change and provide lasting resources for the people who call New Orleans home.”

The grants awarded through Impact 59 Powered by Entergy have been allocated to nonprofit organizations focused on programs that foster positive change in youth development, workforce training, education, health and wellness, and equity and inclusion. These organizations are receiving critical support for their efforts to improve lives in New Orleans and surrounding areas, including Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, Plaquemines, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington parishes. A grant selection committee carefully reviewed eligibility and compliance and made award determinations based on the need, merit, and potential impact of each project.

“We understand how much Super Bowl LIX means to this community and we’re pleased to help give back to New Orleanians who have welcomed us with open arms,” said NFL Vice President of Philanthropy and Executive Director of the NFL Foundation Alexia Gallagher. “The NFL Foundation is dedicated to improving the lives of those touched by the game of football. We’re proud to work with the Super Bowl LIX Host Committee to provide vital funding through the Legacy Grant Program to dozens of local organizations supporting communities in need throughout New Orleans and Louisiana.”

“Super Bowl LIX provides a unique opportunity to make a lasting impact on the host community,” said Drew Marsh, Entergy Chair and Chief Executive Officer. “Through Impact 59 Powered by Entergy, we are proud to support local organizations to help them continue their vital work and strengthen our city for years to come.”

The announcement of the 65 grant recipients reinforces the New Orleans Super Bowl Host Committee’s motto: “It’s what we do.” Impact 59 Powered by Entergy ensures these local organizations receive much-needed funding and resources, furthering their critical work and fostering long-term change in the community.

“At the end of the day, Super Bowl LIX is much more than just a game,” said Jay Cicero, President and CEO of the Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation and the Super Bowl LIX Host Committee. “We’re only 59 days away from the opportunity to showcase our city, support our nonprofit community, boost Louisiana’s economy, and celebrate our rich culture. We are proud to contribute to this incredible legacy that extends beyond the game and has a positive impact on the people of New Orleans.”

Impact 59 is just one of several programs the Host Committee and NFL bring to New Orleans ahead of the big game. NFL Source, a diverse supplier program, launched earlier this year and engaged more than 200 underrepresented businesses in the greater New Orleans Area. Earlier this month, NFL Green and the Host Committee kicked off two sustainability projects in the city, with more to come as we get closer to Feb. 9, 2025.

Entergy Arkansas awards grant to Searcy’s McRae Elementary for accessible playground equipment /news/entergy-arkansas-awards-grant-searcy-s-mcrae-elementary-for-accessible-playground-equipment Tue, 12 Nov 2024 04:17:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-awards-grant-searcy-s-mcrae-elementary-for-accessible-playground-equipment/ Quality education an important part of charitable foundation’s mission

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Nearly one out of five students at McRae Elementary has a recognized disability, which can make not only classroom activities but recess a challenge. Part of the mission of Entergy Arkansas is to address the needs for quality education across the state, and providing a grant to make the school’s playground more accessible was a natural fit for the Entergy Charitable Foundation.

“As a corporation, Entergy Arkansas invests in solutions and partners with nonprofits, schools and government organizations to provide opportunities and programs that create sustainable value and improve the quality of life for all our customers – young families, older Arkansans and everyone in between,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “We do this a number of ways, from providing grants and advocating for our customers to volunteering our time.”

The $5,000 grant will be used to purchase two pieces of inclusive equipment to make the playground more accessible for those with disabilities and allow their classmates to play together more easily as well. The pieces will include an Aro Spinning Chair, which is set at transfer height for those in wheelchairs and has a tilted seat and higher back, and a sensory bench. The Novo® Playful Bench allows kids to sit, relax, engage their senses, play games, learn numbers, and practice language skills in a relaxed space while engaging with each other, their caregivers, or playing solo.

“Learning cooperation and how the world works around them are invaluable life skills that begin during play,” said McRae Elementary School Principal Heather Franks, “and an inclusive playground provides opportunities for children to interact face-to-face and use their imagination. By including a variety of options on the playground, there will be developmentally appropriate challenges that meet kids wherever they are at while letting them build comfortably on the skills they already possess.”

Across the company, Entergy’s Corporate Social Responsibility efforts are focused primarily on the broad pillars of poverty solutions, education and workforce development, and environmental programs. Additionally, the areas of healthy families, arts and culture, and community enrichment are part of the overall strategy to contribute to a society that is healthy, educated, environmentally safe and productive.

“Studies show more than 85 percent of adults with disabilities who report losing their jobs attribute it to a lack of social skills,” Hinkle said, “and that negatively impacts all of our workforce. Play is where we learn from each other and the more opportunities we create for that face-to-face play and social interaction, the more these life-long skills will be developed. We encourage other companies to invest in our children of all abilities to improve our workforce outcomes.”

Entergy Arkansas has awarded nearly $500,000 in shareholder profit and donations to scores of nonprofit partners in Arkansas during the better part of the year. Programs funded range from emergency response and relief services to scholarships and youth services, food pantries and community safety events. Entergy Arkansas employees clocked 29,000 volunteer hours in 2023 based on a goal of 25,000 and hope to meet or exceed that number this year.

To qualify for volunteer service and grants from the company, organizations must be:

  • A public charity or private foundation that qualifies as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity.
  • A state or local government, but only if the volunteer service/donation thereto benefits the public at large.
  • A school, hospital, or religious institution that holds nonprofit status similar to that of 501(c)(3) organizations, but only if the volunteer service/donation thereto benefits the public at large.
  • Certain tax-exempt war-veterans’ organizations, domestic fraternal societies and volunteer fire departments.

Entergy sponsors scholarship event and presents Unsung Hero Award /blog/entergy-sponsors-scholarship-event-presents-unsung-hero-award Thu, 17 Oct 2024 21:41:00 +0000 /entergy-sponsors-scholarship-event-presents-unsung-hero-award Entergy sponsored the 2nd Annual New Orleans Association of Black Journalists Jazz Brunch and Silent Auction, supporting the organization’s scholarship fund. The event honored two local veteran journalists and awarded two scholarships named in their honor: the Nancy Parker Memorial Scholarship awarded to TaShia Hogue, and the William “Bill” Rousselle Memorial Scholarship awarded to Kennedy Wells. These scholarships will assist the recipients in furthering their education.

In addition, the event recognized the 2024 Legacy honorees — Ro Brown, LeBron “LBJ” Joseph, Beverly McKenna, and Monica Pierre – who have made significant contributions to the local media landscape by providing fair and accurate coverage over the years.

This event aligns with Entergy’s commitment to fostering the next generation of professionals and to ensuring that students with talent and ambition are provided an opportunity to succeed. In alignment with Entergy’s broader mission to support educational institutions, Entergy recently announced a 10-year, $20M commitment to HBCUs, including a $2 million grant to Jackson State University through the Entergy Charitable Foundation to help fund the creation of the Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab.

Lance Washington, a distinguished photojournalist, and production manager at Investigate TV+, was honored with the inaugural Unsung Hero Award presented by Entergy. The award recognizes those who work diligently behind the scenes, often without public recognition.

This award is especially meaningful to Entergy as it reflects the invaluable contributions of our own unsung heroes, such as line and plant workers, who often work under perilous conditions to ensure our community has access to safe and reliable power for their homes and businesses.

Through our partnership with NOABJ, Entergy reaffirms its commitment to empowering communities, cultivating future leaders, and to recognizing those who have a meaningful impact on the lives of others.

Entergy awards $2M grant to Jackson State University for Power Grid Security Lab /news/entergy-awards-2m-grant-jackson-state-university-for-power-grid-security-lab Wed, 09 Oct 2024 03:15:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-awards-2m-grant-jackson-state-university-for-power-grid-security-lab/ JACKSON, Miss. – Jackson State University is the recipient of a $2 million grant from the Entergy Charitable Foundation to help fund the creation of the Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab. During a press conference at the University on Monday, Oct. 7, Entergy officials presented JSU President Marcus Thompson, Ph.D., with a big check to celebrate the occasion.

This advanced initiative between Jackson State and Entergy will create an innovation hub to help train a highly skilled cybersecurity workforce to meet the growing needs of nuclear, electric and natural gas companies, and electrical cooperatives.

“I am honored to receive this generous grant on behalf of Jackson State University. This gift will have a lasting impact on the lives of our students and the future of the energy sector,” said Thompson. “Looking ahead, this lab will not only benefit Jackson State University and our students, but it will also play a critical role in shaping the broader energy landscape.”

Local, community, and political leaders were present during the event, including Congressman Bennie Thompson, whom the president thanked for supporting Jackson State, describing it as instrumental.

The Power Grid Security Lab Project will be a cornerstone of JSU’s commitment to workforce development, energy infrastructure, and cybersecurity. The lab will provide students with real-world experience safeguarding critical power grid infrastructure. As cyber threats become more sophisticated and aggressive, the importance of a robust defense system in the energy sector cannot be over-emphasized.¬†

Whether using computers to earn a college degree or checking out at the grocery store, electricity isn’t a luxury for most people, it’s a necessity. And so is thwarting cyber threats in the energy sector,” said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO. “The robust growth in our company and the state is providing extraordinary opportunities to help build a diverse and skilled workforce in the cybersecurity field. Through this partnership, we’re investing in local talent and competing to keep them here. For more than 100 years we’ve served communities alongside Jackson State University, and we’re proud to continue powering the bright minds they produce.”

The lab aims to equip students with valuable technical skills and contribute significantly to society by fostering a workforce prepared to protect vital national infrastructure.

The cybersecurity workforce gap has also become a pressing issue, as the demand for skilled professionals far exceeds the available supply. (ISC)², a global cybersecurity certification body, reported a shortage of approximately 3.4 million cybersecurity professionals worldwide in 2022, with over 700,000 job openings in the U.S. alone. This shortfall poses a significant challenge to national security and the economy as organizations struggle to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks.

In response, Jackson State University is evolving its cybersecurity education curriculum and resources to bridge this gap.

“The establishment of the Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab at Jackson State University is truly a game-changer for our students,” said Dr. Wilbur Walters, Dean of the College of Science, Engineering, and Technology. “Having access to a facility such as this means our students won’t just be learning about cybersecurity—they’ll be directly engaging with the same challenges that professionals are facing in the energy sector today. This hands-on experience makes their education more relevant and impactful. It’s about evolving our curriculum to not only keep pace with the fast-changing tech world but also to ensure our students graduate ready to make a tangible difference.”

The cybersecurity industry has experienced significant growth and transformation over the past decade, primarily driven by the increasing prevalence of digital technology and the corresponding rise in cyber threats. According to a report by Cybersecurity Ventures, global cybercrime costs are expected to reach $10.5 trillion annually by 2025, up from $3 trillion in 2015, highlighting the escalating severity and frequency of cyberattacks. This rapid increase has underscored the critical need for a robust cybersecurity infrastructure, leading to substantial investments by the United States private and public sectors.

“At Entergy, we believe that one of our many strengths in serving our customers is the diversity of our workforce. Our partnership with Jackson State University is a testament to our commitment to creating opportunities for students and shaping the leaders of tomorrow,” said Drew Marsh, ϳԹ chair and CEO. “By investing in education and fostering inclusion, we are not just building a diverse workforce, we are investing in the heart of our communities where we live, work and serve.”

Jackson State will receive the Entergy Charitable Foundation’s grant over multiple installments. The funds are exclusively for developing the Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab, focusing on cybersecurity in the nuclear, energy, and natural gas sectors.

The day-to-day business at Entergy Arkansas is to provide safe, reliable and affordable electricity to our customers. The mission as a corporation is to continually improve the communities served through philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy.

Across the company, those efforts are focused primarily on the broad pillars of poverty solutions, education and workforce development, and environmental programs. Additionally, the areas of healthy families, arts and culture, and community enrichment are part of the overall strategy to contribute to a society that is healthy, educated, environmentally safe and productive.

“As a corporation, Entergy Arkansas invests in solutions and partners with nonprofits, schools and government organizations to provide opportunities and programs that create sustainable value and quality of life,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “Our employees do this each day as well, giving of their time and resources to help those who are disadvantaged, as well as the elderly and disabled.”

The company has awarded nearly $500,000 in shareholder profit and donations to scores of nonprofit partners in Arkansas during the better part of the year. Programs funded range from emergency response and relief services to scholarships and youth services, food pantries and community safety events. Entergy Arkansas employees clocked 29,000 volunteer hours in 2023 based on a goal of 25,000 and hope to meet or exceed that number this year.

Focusing on literacy and education

A few of the largest endeavors so far this year included education and literacy projects, including a statewide partnership with the Arkansas STEM Coalition. In preparation for the April 8 total solar eclipse, Entergy Arkansas partnered with the Coalition to purchase and distribute free eclipse glasses to all public schools in our service territory. A grant from Entergy Arkansas helped fund the purchase of more than 625,000 pairs of eclipse glasses, enough for all preK-12 students, teachers and staff. Volunteers from the STEM Coalition, Entergy Arkansas and other groups worked for more than six weeks to sort and deliver the glasses.

The company also partnered with the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas for the Girls of Promise “Full STEAM Ahead” conference, which introduced 8th grade girls across the state to potential STEAM careers. Nearly 150 girls from 20 counties were able to meet women leaders in the fields of engineering, finance and more. In honor of its 110th anniversary, the state’s largest and oldest electric provider is donating more than half a million dollars as part of its “Entergy Arkansas Bright Futures Campaign” to six partner nonprofits to help build strong communities across its 63-county service territory for a total of $660,000.¬†These donations are made possible by profits from the company owners through the Entergy Charitable Foundation and not with customer dollars.

“I cannot think of a more appropriate way to commemorate the last 110 years and look toward ‘Bright Futures’ for our customers and communities,” said Laura Landreaux, president and CEO of Entergy Arkansas. “Entergy Arkansas has been honored to serve for more than a century in our great state, and these grants highlight important partnerships and demonstrate the priority we place on being good corporate citizens by investing in our customers and the places we all call home.”

Six separate grants in the amount of $110,000 from the Entergy Charitable Foundation will be awarded to nonprofits that align with utility’s philanthropic focus on sustaining families, investing in workforce opportunities and a healthy environment. These initiatives are grounded in actions proven to improve the quality of life in the communities we serve now and for generations to come.¬†

“Strategic giving to our communities through philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy is integral to our corporate mission,” said Ventrell Thompson, Entergy Arkansas’ vice president of customer service. “We invest in local solutions that attack the root causes of poverty, support education and workforce development, and protect and preserve the environment.”

The following nonprofits will receive $110,000 grants to commemorate Entergy Arkansas’ 110th anniversary and kick off the Entergy Arkansas Bright Futures Campaign, which will include a number of efforts and initiatives including volunteerism and advocacy, in the coming year and beyond:

  • The will use funds to support hunger initiatives and child feeding programs, including food-filled backpacks, breakfast and after-school meals through the food banks located in the Entergy Arkansas footprint.
  • The will administer donations of books through the Dolly Parton Foundation’s program and the literacy program to help kids throughout our service territory read at grade level by the third grade.
  • The will support STEM education in Arkansas Schools in our service area focused on low-income students.
  • The internships for women of color who are juniors, seniors and college-aged provides paid experience and includes housing and transportation. This will expose these women to career opportunities and prepare them to enter the workforce and succeed. Many women-owned businesses are located in the Delta, which is in our service area, and a portion of funding will support the .
  • chapters in the Entergy Arkansas service area will receive a total of $110,000 to provide affordable housing to address housing, homelessness and poverty.
  • in Arkansas will use funding to enhance their efforts to protect and restore forests across a 10-county area in the Arkansas Delta and upper Gulf Coastal Plain.

Executive Director Kathy Webb said, “The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance is grateful for a long history of collaboration with Entergy, through LIHEAP information, Entergy’s poverty simulation, and more. Collaborating with community-minded partners like Entergy is essential to alleviate hunger in Arkansas, and the underlying causes. Working together, we lessen food insecurity in several ways, including nutrition education, community outreach, supporting our six Feeding America food banks and hundreds of member pantries, and our efforts advocating for positive changes in Arkansas.”

Entergy Arkansas has a long history of supporting local communities financially and with volunteers. In 2022, the company awarded more than 100 non-profit partners and community organizations with $3.4 million in grants. Employees and retirees dedicated more than 25,292 hours of volunteer service valued at more than $757,495.

“This incredible investment comes at a special time, as the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas celebrates turning ’25 Years Bold’ this year. As we recognize two and half decades of boldly working for women and girls in our state, this unique contribution from Entergy Arkansas in recognition of their own 110th anniversary will be a catalyst to help ensure WFA is able to meet the needs of women and girls in our shared community for generations to come,” said Anna Beth Gorman, CEO of the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas.

“We are excited and grateful to be part of Entergy Arkansas Bright Futures campaign and the recipient of this generous grant,” said Roger Mangham, state director of the Arkansas Nature Conservancy. ¬†“These funds will support our forestry work, keeping the forests we have healthy and planting new trees, which ultimately means better air for us to breathe and cleaner water to drink. We definitely call that an investment in a brighter future!”

Landreaux concluded, “This funding is just the beginning for our ‘Bright Futures’ campaign and will serve as a powerful building block for our core focus areas as we look forward to many more years of powering life for our customers and communities.”
