Entergy New Orleans pioneers a greener future /news/entergy-new-orleans-pioneers-greener-future Fri, 18 Oct 2024 07:06:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-new-orleans-pioneers-greener-future/ NEW ORLEANS – For decades, Entergy has been at the forefront of addressing climate issues and has positioned itself as one of the cleanest large-scale generation fleets in the United States. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in our diverse power generation portfolio and in our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Our power generation portfolio

At Entergy, more than half of the energy we supply comes from efficient natural gas-powered generation and clean nuclear energy. This strategic mix enables us to provide reliable electricity while minimizing environmental impact. Our generation fleet includes a range of sources such as natural gas, nuclear, coal, oil, hydroelectric, in addition to renewable energy resources.

With approximately 24,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, Entergy owns and operates one of the cleanest large-scale generation fleets in the country. We have a fleet of 28 active natural gas, oil, hydroelectric, and coal generating facilities with a combined capacity of nearly 19,000 megawatts.

Our nuclear fleet produces approximately 5,000 megawatts of nuclear capacity. This carbon-free power source is critical in meeting our climate goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. Furthermore, we have approximately 8,600 megawatts of renewable energy projects that are either operational or in approval status awaiting construction.

With a focus on clean energy, Entergy has achieved an impressive milestone with our carbon dioxide emissions 40% below the national average. This accomplishment highlights our dedication to not only meeting but exceeding environmental industry standards.

Local clean energy initiatives

Reflecting our commitment to a sustainable energy future, Entergy New Orleans current portfolio includes approximately 100 MW of renewable energy. Our New Orleans Solar Station, which provides 20 MW of large-scale local renewable generation, exemplifies our efforts to harness solar power and to reducing our carbon footprint. These initiatives are part of a broader strategy that ensures our power generation portfolio continues to meet the growing demand for clean energy.

We believe that our sustainability initiatives should not come at the expense of affordability. This commitment ensures that as we invest in cleaner technologies, we also keep energy costs manageable for our customers. Our dedication to providing affordable services is evident in our competitive electric rates, which are 10% below the national average.

“As a part of Entergy’s power generation team, we understand our responsibility in confronting environmental issues,” said Keith Wood, director of resource planning and market operations at Entergy New Orleans. “Our dedication to sustainability drives us to explore cleaner energy sources and to utilize innovative technology that reduces our carbon output and costs for our customers.”

Entergy New Orleans takes pride in our proactive approach to community engagement and environmental stewardship. Since the establishment of the New Orleans City Council’s clean energy targets, we have consistently met the benchmarks each year. This demonstrates our dedication to supporting local initiatives and underpins our role as a leader in the clean energy landscape.

“At Entergy New Orleans, we understand the critical role we play in addressing the challenge of climate change,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “Our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint is at the core of everything we do. By investing in clean energy alternatives, we are not only meeting the energy needs of today, but also ensuring a cleaner, healthier future.”

As we look to the future, we remain committed to leading the charge in clean energy generation. Our focus on addressing climate issues has placed us among the cleanest generation fleets in the country. Through our investments in renewable resources and innovative technologies, we will continue to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to the communities we serve.

Entergy Louisiana continues to modernize gas infrastructure in the Baton Rouge area /blog/entergy-louisiana-continues-modernize-gas-infrastructure-in-baton-rouge-area Fri, 19 May 2023 01:25:00 +0000 /entergy-louisiana-continues-modernize-gas-infrastructure-in-baton-rouge-area Entergy Louisiana recently received approval from its regulator, the Louisiana Public Service Commission, to expand its gas infrastructure replacement program (GRIP) to include the replacement of vintage steel pipe. This inclusion helps to ensure the company delivers natural gas reliably and safely to customers in Baton Rouge.

Natural gas is important to our customers as many rely on it for cooking, heating, drying, backup generators and creating indispensable materials.

Through the GRIP program, Entergy Louisiana is modernizing its gas infrastructure and improving its safety and operational performance. The 10-year program began in April 2015, and to date, crews have replaced approximately 90 miles of vintage pipe.

Pipe materials initially targeted for replacement included cast iron, bare steel and early vintage polyethylene. As of 2022, the program has replaced a total of 12 more miles compared to its initial target goals. Additionally, all cast iron was replaced by mid-2017, roughly 12 months ahead of schedule.

Along with replacing aging pipes with modern polyethylene gas pipes, converting the older low-pressure system to a high-pressure system improves safety and reliability for customers, making it less susceptible to flood damage and leaks. In addition, excess flow valves that are on the upgraded system serve as a safety feature by automatically isolating parts of the system, or stopping the flow of gas, when damage occurs.

“This is one of many steps at Entergy that we’re taking to provide safe and reliable energy to the communities we serve,” said Chip Arnould, Entergy gas distribution director. “Many of our employees live and work in the communities we serve, and like them, I’m excited to see these infrastructure improvements come to fruition.”

Removing aging gas pipe infrastructure is an industrywide focus. This project will help the company manage the integrity, reliability and safety of the gas distribution system, a primary goal for Entergy’s gas distribution business.

Entergy New Orleans continues to modernize gas infrastructure downtown /blog/entergy-new-orleans-continues-modernize-gas-infrastructure-downtown Fri, 14 Oct 2022 00:56:00 +0000 /entergy-new-orleans-continues-modernize-gas-infrastructure-downtown Entergy gas construction crews are continuing to make progress in modernizing the gas system in Orleans Parish. This month, crews have been installing steel pipe in the Central Business District. The new piping operates at a higher pressure, will be more reliable and add enhanced safety features. The modern piping also offers customers the ability to install equipment that the previous piping may not have been able to support, such as emergency generators. An Excess Flow Valve is added during the installation of the newer pipe material, which helps to minimize gas flow if the line is severed.

This work is part of Entergy New Orleans’ Gas Replacement Infrastructure Program that began after the devastating flooding impacts of Hurricane Katrina. More than 580 miles of piping have been replaced since 2007. By 2032, 650 miles of piping are scheduled to be replaced to complete the modernization of the gas system. These newly installed lines will offer many years of safe reliable gas service to the New Orleans Metro area.

Entergy New Orleans delivers natural gas to more than 110,000 customers in Orleans Parish. The ongoing work helps the company manage the integrity, reliability and safety of the gas distribution system, a primary goal for Entergy’s Gas Distribution Business. This project will help us rapidly modernize our facilities, improve our operational performance, and better serve our customers.

A Resilient System: Entergy Gas Stands Strong After Hurricane Ida /stormcenter/resilient-system-entergy-gas-stands-strong-after-hurricane-ida Mon, 27 Sep 2021 20:24:00 +0000 /resilient-system-entergy-gas-stands-strong-after-hurricane-ida Entergy prepares for severe weather all year-round. When a storm strikes, the company’s storm teams work together to restore power and to keep the gas safely flowing.

When Hurricane Ida’s catastrophic and damaging winds left more than 900,000 customers without power across southeast Louisiana, Entergy Gas customers in New Orleans and Baton Rouge were able to use an alternative means to power their needs.

“Before a storm comes our way, we assess our gas systems for supply availability and redundancy,” said Tad Patella, Entergy’s director of gas operations. “After Hurricane Ida passed, our customers were able to rely on our gas system without limitations or supply constraints.”

The gas system played a quiet, yet significant role in helping the New Orleans Power Station bring first lights to New Orleans East. Once repairs began on Entergy’s distribution system, NOPS delivered power to light nearly 8,000 residential and critical business customers within three days of Hurricane Ida’s passing.

New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board also was able to self-generate electricity by connecting their generators to Entergy’s gas supply.

The system’s ability to sustain the hurricane was, in part, due to the and the .

“For years, we have systematically invested and successfully executed our infrastructure replacement programs to make our systems more resilient,” Patella continued. “I am proud of the Entergy gas team and of everyone who supported and operated our system to ensure we performed at a premiere level to power customers after Ida.”

Entergy New Orleans began rebuilding its gas system after it was overwhelmed by Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters. Since then, most of the company’s low-pressure system has upgraded to a more modern high-pressure system. These upgrades made for better reliability, safety and protection against storms and flooding.

In Baton Rouge, Entergy is continuing to remove aged pipe infrastructure and replace it with modern pipe materials to enhance the safety and reliability of the natural gas system.

The New Orleans gas replacement infrastructure program is expected to be completed by 2026 and the Baton Rouge natural gas infrastructure replacement program is expected to be completed by 2024.

Gas Safety

Customers should always stay alert for natural gas leaks. If you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a window and leave the area immediately. Do not use an open flame, operate electrical switches, use telephones (corded or mobile) or other electronic devices. Call the gas company from a nearby building and don’t re-enter until it’s safe to do so. More gas safety tips are available

Additionally, customers who choose to use a generator should always use portable electric generators in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Visit Entergy’s webpage for more tips.

Gas Replacement Program Delivering Safer, More Reliable Product to Customers /blog/gas-replacement-program-delivering-safer-more-reliable-product-customers Thu, 03 Jun 2021 19:24:00 +0000 /gas-replacement-program-delivering-safer-more-reliable-product-customers Natural gas is an essential fuel for customers in Louisiana. In the spirit of Entergy’s commitment to continuous improvement and in order to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of gas, that infrastructure needs to be replaced.

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans are currently replacing hundreds of miles of cast iron, bare steel and other vintage gas pipes to modernize the companies’ gas delivery system. Read more below for an update on each company’s gas replacement program status.

Baton Rouge

In April of 2015, Entergy Louisiana began an accelerated pipe replacement program in Baton Rouge, a 10-year effort to improve the safety and reliability of the natural gas system. To date, crews have replaced approximately 69 miles of aging pipe in the greater Baton Rouge area along with converting the entire system to high-pressure.

The project involves replacement of approximately 100 miles of gas pipe, or roughly 6% of the main gas system. As of this past year, the program is ahead of schedule by approximately 14.3 miles.

Pipe types initially targeted for replacement include cast iron, bare steel and early vintage polyethylene. As of mid-2017, all cast iron and bare steel has been replaced, a full year ahead of schedule. Only early vintage polyethylene remains and is the focus for the remainder of the program.

New Orleans

Entergy New Orleans began rebuilding New Orleans’ natural gas system in 2007 after Hurricane Katrina’s floodwaters inundated the gas system and caused ongoing reliability disruptions in the hardest hit areas of the city. Using state-of-the-art technology and upgraded material, the company has converted a large portion of the city’s low-pressure gas system to a more modern high-pressure system. These new lines being installed will offer many years of safe reliable gas service including new safety protection features and higher-pressure availability to power modern equipment like on-demand water heaters and back-up generation.

Along with replacing aging pipes, converting the older low-pressure system to a high-pressure system will vastly improve safety and reliability for customers, making it less susceptible to flood damage and leaks. The new system is being rebuilt with industry-standard, high-density polyethylene gas pipe which is virtually impervious to saltwater corrosion compared to cast iron or steel traditionally used for gas systems. The new high-pressure system enhances public safety by including the installation of an excess flow valve which minimizes or stops the flow of gas by automatically closing if a service line is damaged.

As of May 2021, Entergy New Orleans has replaced approximately 85% of the low-pressure system; or 556 miles of the 650 miles that were in service when the flooding occurred.

Overall, removing aging gas pipe infrastructure is an industrywide focus. This project will help the company manage the integrity, reliability and safety of the gas distribution system, a primary goal for Entergy’s Gas Distribution Business. This work will help us rapidly modernize our facilities, improve our operational performance and better safely serve our customers.

New Orleans’ Gas System Performs Better Than Before Katrina /stormcenter/new-orleans-gas-system-performs-better-than-before-katrina Thu, 09 Oct 2014 08:38:00 +0000 /new-orleans-gas-system-performs-better-than-before-katrina Employees in Entergy’s gas business have reduced leaks in New Orleans by half since Hurricane Katrina destroyed a significant portion of the system in 2005.

“The system performs better today because of the rebuild work done by our employees,” said Michelle Bourg, gas distribution business director.

Bourg said Entergy’s gas employees are recognized as industry experts, as evidenced by winning the Platts Award for Infrastructure Project of the Year in 2009. Three years later, employees shared their unique experiences with New Jersey Natural Gas workers following damage to their system caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The gas rebuild map is updated regularly on entergyneworleans.com.

Katrina flooded more than half of New Orleans’ 1,500-mile gas delivery system. To date, 290 miles of pipe have been rebuilt, including replacing 162 miles of cast iron pipe with higher-density plastic pipe.

“The replacement pipe is extremely robust and virtually impervious to salt water corrosion, compared to cast iron or steel,” said Bourg. “It is smaller, shipped in long sections, requires less maintenance and is less susceptible to water-related outages.”

Bourg added that replacement cost is less than a third of the industry average, supporting the group’s mission to provide customers with safe, reliable and affordable energy. The group uses pipe data to identify and prioritize replacement through a condition-based approach, including pipe age, leak history, reliability issues and population.

Recent news articles focused on potential dangers of cast iron and bare steel pipe installed within the nation’s gas-delivery infrastructure. Bourg said the company has a good story to tell.

“There is no bare steel pipe in Entergy’s New Orleans gas system,” she said. The Baton Rouge system has less than 1 percent, she added.

Cast iron pipe remaining in the Entergy system includes less than 7 percent in New Orleans and less than 1 percent in Baton Rouge. Since 2004, 49 percent of cast iron pipe has been removed from New Orleans.

“We are working with the Louisiana Public Service Commission to implement a program early next year to accelerate pipe replacement in Baton Rouge,” Bourg said.

Entergy’s Gas Distribution Business, in existence since the early 1920s, provides gas service to approximately 104,000 customers in New Orleans and 93,000 customers in Baton Rouge, with approximately 3,428 miles of main gas pipe and 2,057 miles of service gas pipe throughout both cities.

A map reviewing infrastructure replacement progress and next areas for work on the gas rebuild is updated regularly on .
