What happened to this year?

And yet, the season also gives us time to pause, to reflect on 12 months of achievements and challenges, and to plan for fresh beginnings in the spanking-new year.

As we reminisce about the highlights of24, it’s only fitting that we spotlight some of the best and brightest moments for Entergy’s nuclear fleet.

Let’s flip some calendar pages and name a few….

March, Entergy Nuclear engineeredsome exciting changesin Port Gibson, Miss.! An all-woman group of managers led Grand Gulf Nuclear Station’s engineering team—an important first! Valerie Myers is plant support manager, Tori Robinson led the design projects team and Grace Settoon managed strategic and systems engineering. Since then, in recognition of their excellent work, Robinson accepted a position as design projects manager at the corporate office in Jackson, and Settoon was selected by site leadership to serve as a consultant at the, headquartered in Atlanta.

April, two-thirds of Arkansas fell inside the path of totality during the historic total eclipse, causing a very brief reduction in output at the solar energy stations. Yet, due to Entergy’s diverse energy portfolio—roughlycomes from nuclear—Entergy still kept the lights shining brightfor its customers!

June,ɾٳٴthat promises some powerful benefits! The project could increase efficiencies, lower operational costs, prevent generation losses due to equipment failures and improve the predictability of plant operations. If proved successful, Entergy will employ the model at one of its stations and potentially expand to others.

September, while the winds of Hurricane Francine howled, thanks to the diligent preparation, strong teamwork and safety-first mindset of Entergy’s nuclear professionals, their plants stayed on the grid, producing round-the-clock power for its customers. Entergy’s communities are grateful for the strength and resilience not only of nuclear power—but also of the entire team at Arkansas Nuclear One in Russellville, Ark.; Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Miss.; River Bend Station in St. Francisville, La., and Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station in Killona, La.

Later inSeptember,, a consortium of leading North American utilities that advise on the development and commercialization offluoride salt-cooled, high-temperature reactǰ. Entergy’s Chief Nuclear Officer Kimberly Cook-Nelson said of the alliance, “We believe advanced nuclear technologies will play an important role in decarbonizing the U.S. energy system, and we’re pleased to be in a position to help nurture the development of new resources like KP-FHR.”

October, Cook-Nelson was named among the 2024in the Profiles in Diversity Journal® magazine, which recognizes influential women who are using their talents to improve their workplace and our world. In its third-quarter issue, the journal featured Cook-Nelson’s reflections of her 28 years in the nuclear industry and her advice to never shy away from a challenge, shun the phrase “you can’t” and always remember: It’s about the people.

Also inOctober, TheEntergy Charitable Foundationawarded ato help the HBCU establish a Critical Power Grid Network Security Lab. As an expansion of the university’s cybersecurity education curriculum, the lab will serve a twofold purpose: to offer students the necessary skills and resources to learn about the industry and to help grow a workforce to meet the needs of nuclear, electric and natural gas companies. Entergy and JSU have partnered before to create the, another program in the.

Later that month, Entergy’s nuclear fleet celebrated international! The company is proud that its five reactors in four locations in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi can cleanly power small towns, big cities and everywhere in between. By harnessing100% clean nuclear power, Entergy is helping to meet the growing demands of the nation’s carbon-free energy needs.

December, Entergy Nuclear topped off the year with theǴ, Unit 1! Now, the two nuclear units at ANO generate not only a steady stream of clean, carbon-free energy but also significant positive impact in the River Valley. The station employs more than 1,000 full-time nuclear professionals who care deeply about their community. And just for good measure, let’s celebrate the contributions made by Entergy’sentirenuclear fleet! In 2024, all four nuclear stations—Arkansas Nuclear One, Grand Gulf, River Bend Station in St. Francisville, La. and Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station in Killona, La. — together with Entergy Nuclear headquarters in Jackson, Miss.,awarded $155,805 in grants to benefit their surrounding communities.

Save your energy for what matters most /blog/save-your-energy-for-what-matters-most Tue, 03 Dec 2024 20:26:24 +0000 /?p=13234 The holidays in New Orleans are truly magical—String lights shimmer in the oaks, homes glow with festive decor and the scent of warm gumbo fills the air. However, keeping the lights on and the house cozy can quickly add up in energy costs. Here’s how to enjoy the holiday season while keeping your energy usage in check, which can help lower your utility bill.

  1. Be smart about holiday lighting. New Orleans is known for its vibrant holiday displays, but you don’t have to dim your festive spirit to save energy:
  • : They use up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last much longer.
  • Use timers: Set your lights to turn on at dusk and off before bed to avoid running them all night.
  • Unplug when not home: Ensure holiday lights and decorations are unplugged when you’re not around.
  1. Efficiently heat your home. While winters in New Orleans are mild, occasional cold snaps can lead to higher heating bills. Stay warm without wasting energy:
  • : Use weatherstripping around doors and windows to keep warm air in and cold air out.
  • Use ceiling fans: Set them to rotate clockwise at a low speed to push warm air back down into the room.
  • Skip turning up the heat during gatherings: More people mean less heating is needed. The added body heat from guests often keeps the space warm enough.
  1. Cook smart in the kitchen. Holiday feasts are a staple, but ovens and stovetops can drive up energy usage. Cook efficiently with these tips:
  • Cook multiple dishes at once: Use the same temperature, and keep the oven door closed.
  • Keep lids on pots and pans: Covering your cookware helps cook food faster and saves energy.
  • Use microwaves: Microwaves use less energy than ovens, making them ideal for reheating or cooking small portions.

Every kilowatt-hour you save during the holidays is money you can put toward what truly matters—whether it’s a special gift for a loved one, a donation to a favorite cause, or creating memories with family and friends. By making small adjustments, you can enjoy a season that’s both joyful and budget-friendly.

Entergy prepared for colder months ahead /stormcenter/entergy-prepared-for-colder-months-ahead-307133133 Mon, 18 Dec 2023 19:30:00 +0000 /entergy-prepared-for-colder-months-ahead-307133133 As hurricane season came to an official end on the last day of November, cooler temps are just starting to arrive, with colder weather expected over the holidays and into the new year.Even if we live or work where extremelycold temperatures are not persistent, it’s still important to be prepared fǰfreezing and inclement weather. As we know, cold snaps can happen without much warning.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s , El Nino will remain in place across the winter season for the first time in four years. The expected results will be wetter and cooler winter months this year, bringing much-needed drought relief to our service area. Temperatures overall are expected to be a few degrees cooler this winter.

We’ve learned to be ready for anything

The past two years have seen major winter weather events in February and December of 2022 and January and February 2023, with parts of our service area experiencing winter storms that brought high winds, freezing rains and ice accumulation. The winter season of 2021 saw in more than 30 years.

While weather can be unpredictable, we remain storm ready no matter the season. And we’ve taken measures in advance to ensure we’re winter-ready:

Unique readiness plans in place for each power plant

  • Performing early fall season assessments to identify and correct winterization deficiencies on sensitive plant equipment.
  • Insulating critical equipment using improved methods and materials that allow them to withstand lower temperatures.
  • Insulating or draining piping with potential for standing water during normal operation, to prevent freezing and breaks.
  • Designing and building permanent windbreaks or enclosures to protect critical equipment and instrumentation.
  • Exploring the use of wireless instrument line monitoring systems to monitor temperatures of critical equipment.
  • Hosting winter season lessons learned across our system – including the sharing of operational experiences across power plants with similar technologies.

Measures taken with transmission lines, facilities

  • Inspecting and maintaining substations and transmission lines that are critical to Bulk Electric System reliability.
  • Performing substation inspections in accordance with transmission management procedures.
  • Identifying any potential equipment performance issues.
  • Testing infrequently used generating units, including the startup of emergency generators, where applicable, and checking freeze protection equipment.

Critical systems and infrastructure prepared across the grid

  • Inspecting and testing equipment that can be impacted by extreme cold such as gas-filled circuit breakers.
  • Ensuring the readiness of assets that provide electric service to critical gas infrastructure and other points of delivery that are vital to support generation reliability and resiliency.

We’re storm ready, 365 days a year

When a weather threat arises, we ramp up support:

  • We use forecasts and computer models based on experience with previous storms to predict an estimated number and duration of outages that could possibly occur.
  • Based on those estimates, the company calls on restoration workers from around the country to restore power as safely and quickly as possible for our customers.
  • Entergy continuously plans and improves the process of assessing damage, positioning personnel in the right place with the required materials to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.
  • We take steps to maintain and control vegetation across our service area, completing annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact from fallen trees or branches following a storm.
  • Prior to storms impacting our area, vegetation crews perform pre-storm patrols of circuits to mitigate any imminent threats within the right of way.
  • Our year-round storm preparations include the vegetation management program and the targeted “ground to sky” vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line.
  • We also use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help predict when trimming may be needed.
