Upon completion, this new facility on the West Bank of Ascension Parish will be the largest facility of its kind in the world.

The investment is a joint venture with JERA Co., Inc., Japan’s largest energy company, and Mitsui & Co., Inc., a leading global investment company. The project is expected to create 103 direct new permanent jobs with an average salary of $110,000. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) estimates the project will result in 311 indirect new jobs, for a total of 414 potential new jobs in the Capital Region.

“This project demonstrates that Louisiana is continuing to lead the world in innovative energy and manufacturing processes, and I am proud that we are creating even more new, high-paying jobs that will ensure Louisianans will not have to leave the state looking for work,” Governor Jeff Landry said. “This project moves us even closer to announcing $50 billion in projects since I took office by the end of this summer, continuing a historic run of investments that are changing the narrative about Louisiana as an outstanding place to do business.”

The facility is expected to export approximately 1.4 million metric tons of low-carbon ammonia annually to international markets, playing a significant role in the global energy market. The facility will utilize cutting-edge carbon reduction and carbon capture and sequestration technology, with carbon sequestered by 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental.

“CF Industries and our partners are proud to bring the world’s most advanced low-carbon ammonia production facility to Louisiana and the West Bank of Ascension Parish,” said CF Industries Holdings, Inc. President and CEO Tony Will. “Our project will be uniquely advantaged to meet global customer demand for low-carbon ammonia thanks to Louisiana’s skilled workforce, strong business environment, ample natural resources, and access to carbon capture and sequestration. We appreciate the support from Governor Landry and his team, as well as from Ascension Parish and local leaders, that enabled this industry-leading project to become a reality.”

For more than 50 years, CF Industries has invested in Louisiana. The company’s existing Donaldsonville Complex on 1,400 acres on Highway 3089 is currently the world’s  ammonia and nitrogen production facility and has more than 500 employees.

The $4 billion project is the final investment decision for CF Industries’ 2022  that it was evaluating the site in Ascension Parish for the world-scale facility.

“Louisiana is experiencing an unprecedented wave of momentum that is fostering innovation, creating opportunities and putting our state on the global stage,” said LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois. “When forward-thinking manufacturing leaders like CF Industries make investments in new energy technology, the world sits up and takes notice. We thank CF Industries for choosing to expand its footprint in Louisiana, and we look forward to many more years of partnership ahead that will drive industry advancements and impact.”

The new production facility will be located at the RiverPlex MegaPark on the West Bank in Ascension Parish, the same industrial park where  will establish its nearly $6 billion clean steel manufacturing facility.

“Entergy Louisiana is proud to power this transformative project, bringing one of the world’s first low-carbon ammonia production facilities to life in Louisiana,” said Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May. “Our collaboration underscores the critical role strong partnerships play in advancing global energy technology while creating meaningful economic opportunities here at home. Together, we’re not only fueling innovation, we’re building a more sustainable future for our communities and our customers.”

“CF Industries has been an incredible community ally and their continued investment in Ascension is a testament to their commitment to our shared future,” said Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment.

To win the project, LED offered CF Industries a competitive incentives package that includes the comprehensive workforce development solutions of LED FastStart and a $6 million performance-based grant for project development and infrastructure expenditures. The company is also participating in the state’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program and is expected to utilize the Quality Jobs program.

“This is the kind of win we work toward every day — bringing meaningful, lasting opportunities to the areas that need them most,” said Ascension Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Kate MacArthur. “It’s a sign that our local economy is on the rise and that clean energy innovation is happening right here in our backyard.”

“This project’s progression from feasibility to full realization is a significant win for our region,” said Baton Rouge Area Chamber President and CEO Lori Melancon. “We are committed to supporting CF Industries’ growth in the Baton Rouge area and anticipate significant economic benefits from the continued development of the RiverPlex MegaPark.”

Entergy New Orleans creates career pathways and shapes future workforce /blog/entergy-new-orleans-creates-career-pathways-and-shapes-future-workforce Mon, 09 Dec 2024 20:45:31 +0000 /?p=13268 The 1881 Internship Program, a partnership between the 1881 Institute and Entergy New Orleans and Entergy Louisiana, is providing underrepresented individuals with hands-on experience in technical roles in the energy sector. The 1881 Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on preparing diverse populations for careers in engineering and skilled trades, has teamed up with Entergy to offer apprenticeships aimed at creating a more inclusive and skilled workforce in Louisiana.

The internship program offers apprenticeships where interns shadow substation and relay technicians and engineering associates. By bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world application, the program introduces participants to career opportunities that many may not have been exposed to or previously considered.

“The program’s impact extends beyond technical training,” said Anthony Tamporello, area substation supervisor and program facilitator. “Hearing the interns explain how their classroom learning connects to their on-site experiences confirms the program’s meaningful impact. It is incredibly rewarding to guide the next generation of engineers and technicians and to witness their growth.”

Interns Brandon Robertson and Carl Harris are among those benefiting from the program. This semester, the apprentices shadowed professional relay technicians and mechanics, gaining invaluable hands-on experience. Next semester, they will continue their training by working alongside engineering associates. This comprehensive approach allows interns to explore various roles and determine the best fit for their skills and interests.

“This program presents me with career opportunities that I did not know about,” said Brandon Robertson, an1881 Internship program participant. “This transformative experience has given me the chance to shift gears and learn about work that is meaningful to me. I know now that I want to be a substation mechanic, and I will work hard in this program to achieve my goal.”

Through this partnership, Entergy New Orleans and the 1881 Internship Program are shaping a more diverse workforce while providing participants with a pathway to fulfilling careers.

Entergy takes on larger role to encourage more businesses to locate in New Orleans (NOLA.com) /blog/entergy-takes-on-larger-role-encourage-more-businesses-locate-in-new-orleans Thu, 23 Mar 2023 03:34:00 +0000 /entergy-takes-on-larger-role-encourage-more-businesses-locate-in-new-orleans From The Times-Picayune: Entergy New Orleans is working with community and business partners across the city to spur more economic growth.

Taurus Wright, Director of Entergy New Orleans’ Business and Economic Development office, works to recruit new companies to the area and help businesses grow and become more competitive in the marketplace. It’s a role that Entergy New Orleans has taken on to increase tax revenue for the city, add more high-paying jobs and distribute energy costs across a larger customer base.

“We’re working with the city, the state, and several organizations, who welcome our input because we all see that we cannot do this work alone,” Wright said. “Everyone has a role to play, and I think we have the right people at the table to win projects and expand our economy.”

Wright said listening to community needs is one of Entergy New Orleans’ key pillars in its economic development work. For example, the company met with New Orleans East leaders and residents who expressed the need for a grocery store in the area. Wright’s team then met with the New Orleans Business Alliance to develop a recruiting package that has been sent to several grocery chains to attract interest.

Jeanette Weiland, senior vice president for bio, innovation and special projects with the New Orleans Business Alliance, said having Entergy New Orleans representatives involved in economic development discussions is a major advantage for the city because they can immediately answer questions about utility services and reliability.

“When you’re talking to companies about potentially locating here, the utility piece is a factor that they definitely consider,” Weiland said. “Companies that work in biotech, manufacturing or food and beverage especially need a lot of power and predictability. Having Entergy New Orleans there is key to those conversations because they can discuss those issues and provide assurances.”

Wright noted that more companies are also interested in electrification, an area where Entergy New Orleans is actively expanding programs and assistance. Increasingly, the company is providing businesses with clean energy options such as equipment that runs on electricity rather than gas or diesel, LED lighting and incentives to be more energy efficient, he said.

Weiland said that while hospitality and tourism will always be cornerstones of the New Orleans economy, leaders have recognized the need to diversify the business landscape as much as possible. That means there are increasing efforts to attract industries such as biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and consumer packaged goods. The hope is that New Orleans’ strategic location along the Mississippi River and Interstate 10, plus its strong base of educational and research institutions, will position it well for growth in these areas in the coming years.

“We understand that the way we can help those industries the most is to keep our rates low and provide reliable service,” Wright said. “When we do that as a utility company, it also means more investment in our communities.”

Weiland said she and others are most encouraged by the fact that Wright and the Entergy New Orleans team have embraced the spirit of teamwork and collaboration that is needed for everyone to be successful.

“Entergy New Orleans is the perfect partner to exemplify the fact that business is still relationship-oriented,” she said. “The relationships that Taurus and his team have cultivated over the years, paired with ours, are going to be our best bet for landing companies in the future.”

  • Ceres Research and Industrial Interplex Site B, Warren County – $1,368,000 for stream mitigation, drainage improvements, water and sewer system improvements, and to design entrance improvements

Entergy Mississippi participated in the grant funding process by joining other state utilities in hiring a national consultant to identify sites for the Select Sites program, one of three programs funded by these grants. The Select Sites program was created in 2021 to increase the number of highly competitive industrial sites in the state that are available and ready to meet prospective companies’ needs. Twenty of the state’s top publicly owned industrial sites were evaluated by Strategic Development Group, based in Greenville, South Carolina.

Congratulations to all the grant winners—a win for one is a win for all working to bring jobs and growth to the state!
