LA Advanced Meters – Entergy We power life. On Dec. 31, 2021, Entergy completed its initial phase of upgrading more than 3 million electric meters for customers’ homes and businesses. Significant progress has also been made with less than 4,000 advanced meter upgrades remaining for gas services.

Installing advanced meters and the supporting communications network is one of several investments we have made to build a smarter, more resilient grid for everyone. Other enhancements include , the new and improved customer engagement portal, advanced software known as the Advance Distribution Management System used to visualize and control the distribution grid, the addition of new smart devices that can communicate with each other, and the ADMS system to coordinate and implement changes when an event occurs.

“Over the last few years, Entergy has significantly modernized the grid, most recently completing three million new meter installations across our four-state service area,” said Dale Claudel, Entergy’s vice president of grid modernization and strategy. “These new technologies bring real benefits to our customers, like putting more control in their hands to better manage their energy usage. It also gives us clearer insight to the power grid and how it is operating, ultimately creating a smarter energy future for our customers and communities.”

Advanced meters work together with other smart grid technology to identify power outages more accurately and automatically isolate them, which reduces outage times for our customers.

“These upgrades also lay the foundation for newer technologies and customer solutions, including distributed energy resources and energy storage,” Claudel said. “For example, solar panels combined with battery storage can play a key role in grid resiliency and flexibility in the near future. Our team is refining ways to integrate advanced energy technologies into the power grid and provide clean energy solutions for our customers.”

Entergy to Bring Advanced Meters to Louisiana Homes and Businesses /news/entergy-bring-advanced-meters-louisiana-homes-businesses-1391862525 Tue, 08 Jan 2019 08:48:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-bring-advanced-meters-louisiana-homes-businesses-1391862525/ Company using technology to modernize electric grid, build smarter energy future

BATON ROUGE, La. – Outages identified more accurately. Faster outage restoration response. Billing and service questions answered more efficiently. Additional energy-saving tools for customers. These are all benefits of Entergy Louisiana’s vision for a smarter energy future, through the company’s deployment of advanced metering.

This multi-year project is already underway with the design and build of the communications network and IT systems taking place over the past two years. Placement of the communications equipment on electric poles and structures has begun, and advanced meters will be installed at homes and businesses the company serves starting in mid-February with projected completion by the end of 2021.

“In partnership with the Louisiana Public Service Commission, we are laying the foundation for grid modernization technologies that will create a smarter energy future for Louisiana and offer a wide-range of benefits to our customers,” said Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana, LLC.

Upgrading to advanced meters has numerous advantages, including:

  • New online tools will be available to help customers better understand and manage energy usage more effectively, which can lead to reduced energy consumption and potentially lower bills.
  • No more waiting until the end of the month to review energy usage. Via the online tools, customers can log in to their accounts and view how much electricity has been used hours before, shown in 15-minute increments.
  • With better information, Entergy Louisiana can answer customers’ billing and service questions faster and more effectively, improving customer service.
  • The company will have a clearer real-time picture of the power grid and how it is operating. Outages can be identified more accurately, so crews can arrive on the scene faster and safely begin making repairs.

Advanced metering has been implemented by the majority of other United States utilities. It is digital technology that enables secure two-way communication between the customer and Entergy Louisiana, and each meter is equipped with a network radio. The radio transmits meter readings to the electric network access point, housed on an electric pole near the meter. This data is then transmitted to the utility through a secure cellular network. Advanced metering also brings opportunities for potential new programs that can help further reduce customers’ energy usage and better support environmentally sustainable communities.

At the Vanguard of Change /blog/at-vanguard-change Mon, 11 Sep 2017 06:00:00 +0000 /at-vanguard-change 30-year Entergy veteran working to help shape smarter energy future for Entergy customers

After nearly 30 years on the front lines of customer service for Entergy, Greg Fenn is now part of the vanguard working to transform the way the company operates.

“Customers are going to see a huge shift in the way we do business over the next three to five years,” Fenn said.

Fenn is a member of an Entergy team leading the way toward building a smarter energy future that will feature improved outage response, new tools to help customers save money, and improved customer service.

Entergy’s vision for that future took a big step forward in Louisiana recently when state regulators unanimously approved a multi-year plan to install advanced meters at homes and businesses served by Entergy Louisiana.

“Our customers are expecting a different level of service these days, and an advanced metering system is the platform that enables us to get there,” Fenn said.

Fenn was ready to help drive that change. “I wanted to be part of something that will transform our company and help our customers, and I jumped at the opportunity.”

He is now part of a team supporting projects that will both change how Entergy interacts with customers and modernize Entergy’s grid.

Advanced meters are the foundation for creating a smarter energy future. Over the next 18 months, Entergy Louisiana will build and deploy the IT systems and infrastructure needed for the technology and installation of the advanced meters. Meter installation will begin in early 2019 and be complete by the end of 2021.

For customers, the upgrade to advanced meters will produce numerous benefits.

“It gives customers options and control. It will allow for such things as energy management systems and daily usage monitoring so customers can manage their energy consumption, which can lead to lower bills,” Fenn said.

Customers can also anticipate faster outage restoration. The meters will provide a clear, real-time picture of the power grid, allowing employees to identify outages more quickly and accurately, Fenn said.

“With better information, we can answer customers’ billing and service questions more quickly and effectively,” Fenn said.

“Advanced metering systems will provide tons of data,” Fenn said. “We will need to have the systems and people in place to use that data so it provides value to our customers.”
