RAYVILLE, La. – Entergy Louisiana is proud to announce progress on a critical infrastructure project that will help power  in Richland Parish. The construction project, which was completed safely ahead of schedule, is part of the company’s long-term commitment to support economic development in the region and ensure that customers continue to benefit from a strong and resilient electric system.

The work completed will help deliver 10-megawatts of power – enough to meet the construction needs of Meta’s state-of-the-art facility. In the process, Entergy Louisiana is also making improvements that will benefit all existing customers in the area by increasing power reliability and resilience.

“This project reflects the kind of forward-thinking investment that drives growth in our communities,” said Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana. “Not only are we supporting one of the world’s leading technology companies as they build right here in Richland Parish, but we’re also strengthening the grid for our existing customers and creating economic opportunities across the region.”

Project Highlights:

  • Enhanced reliability: Upgrades to a key distribution line will improve electric service for local customers, making the system more resilient to outages and weather events.
  • Local economic impact: The project has already paid approximately $3 million to Louisiana-based contract partners and $150,000 to local landowners for land rights needed to complete construction.
  • Community investment: Construction includes rebuilding nearly five miles of electric lines and installing advanced voltage regulation equipment, ensuring both Meta and nearby communities benefit from reliable power.

Execution of this work is being handled by a team of experienced, local engineers and construction partners including Chain Electric Company of West Monroe, Hunt, Guillot and Associates of Ruston, and RC Boring of Cottonport, among others.

“Projects of this magnitude bring benefits to all customers, including families, small businesses and communities throughout northeast Louisiana,” added May. “We’re building the future of energy, and we’re doing it in a way that lifts up everyone.”

Entergy Louisiana to power $4B, world’s largest low-carbon ammonia facility in Ascension /news/entergy-louisiana-to-power-4b-worlds-largest-low-carbon-ammonia-facility-in-ascension Wed, 09 Apr 2025 04:01:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-to-power-4b-worlds-largest-low-carbon-ammonia-facility-in-ascension/ DONALDSONVILLE, La. – CF Industries Holdings, Inc., the world’s largest producer of ammonia and its partners have announced an approximately $4 billion final investment decision to establish a low-carbon ammonia facility. Upon completion, this new facility on the West Bank of Ascension Parish will be the largest facility of its kind in the world.

The investment is a joint venture with JERA Co., Inc., Japan’s largest energy company, and Mitsui & Co., Inc., a leading global investment company. The project is expected to create 103 direct new permanent jobs with an average salary of $110,000. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) estimates the project will result in 311 indirect new jobs, for a total of 414 potential new jobs in the Capital Region.

“This project demonstrates that Louisiana is continuing to lead the world in innovative energy and manufacturing processes, and I am proud that we are creating even more new, high-paying jobs that will ensure Louisianans will not have to leave the state looking for work,” Governor Jeff Landry said. “This project moves us even closer to announcing $50 billion in projects since I took office by the end of this summer, continuing a historic run of investments that are changing the narrative about Louisiana as an outstanding place to do business.”

The facility is expected to export approximately 1.4 million metric tons of low-carbon ammonia annually to international markets, playing a significant role in the global energy market. The facility will utilize cutting-edge carbon reduction and carbon capture and sequestration technology, with carbon sequestered by 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental.

“CF Industries and our partners are proud to bring the world’s most advanced low-carbon ammonia production facility to Louisiana and the West Bank of Ascension Parish,” said CF Industries Holdings, Inc. President and CEO Tony Will. “Our project will be uniquely advantaged to meet global customer demand for low-carbon ammonia thanks to Louisiana’s skilled workforce, strong business environment, ample natural resources, and access to carbon capture and sequestration. We appreciate the support from Governor Landry and his team, as well as from Ascension Parish and local leaders, that enabled this industry-leading project to become a reality.”

For more than 50 years, CF Industries has invested in Louisiana. The company’s existing Donaldsonville Complex on 1,400 acres on Highway 3089 is currently the world’s  ammonia and nitrogen production facility and has more than 500 employees.

The $4 billion project is the final investment decision for CF Industries’ 2022  that it was evaluating the site in Ascension Parish for the world-scale facility.

“Louisiana is experiencing an unprecedented wave of momentum that is fostering innovation, creating opportunities and putting our state on the global stage,” said LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois. “When forward-thinking manufacturing leaders like CF Industries make investments in new energy technology, the world sits up and takes notice. We thank CF Industries for choosing to expand its footprint in Louisiana, and we look forward to many more years of partnership ahead that will drive industry advancements and impact.”

The new production facility will be located at the RiverPlex MegaPark on the West Bank in Ascension Parish, the same industrial park where  will establish its nearly $6 billion clean steel manufacturing facility.

“Entergy Louisiana is proud to power this transformative project, bringing one of the world’s first low-carbon ammonia production facilities to life in Louisiana,” said Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May. “Our collaboration underscores the critical role strong partnerships play in advancing global energy technology while creating meaningful economic opportunities here at home. Together, we’re not only fueling innovation, we’re building a more sustainable future for our communities and our customers.”

“CF Industries has been an incredible community ally and their continued investment in Ascension is a testament to their commitment to our shared future,” said Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment.

To win the project, LED offered CF Industries a competitive incentives package that includes the comprehensive workforce development solutions of LED FastStart and a $6 million performance-based grant for project development and infrastructure expenditures. The company is also participating in the state’s Industrial Tax Exemption Program and is expected to utilize the Quality Jobs program.

“This is the kind of win we work toward every day — bringing meaningful, lasting opportunities to the areas that need them most,” said Ascension Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Kate MacArthur. “It’s a sign that our local economy is on the rise and that clean energy innovation is happening right here in our backyard.”

“This project’s progression from feasibility to full realization is a significant win for our region,” said Baton Rouge Area Chamber President and CEO Lori Melancon. “We are committed to supporting CF Industries’ growth in the Baton Rouge area and anticipate significant economic benefits from the continued development of the RiverPlex MegaPark.”

Entergy Louisiana to power $5.8B Hyundai steel plant /news/entergy-louisiana-to-power-5-8b-hyundai-steel-plant Tue, 25 Mar 2025 04:15:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-to-power-5-8b-hyundai-steel-plant/ “Louisiana wins again,” 5,400 jobs anticipated, transformative investment in the region

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Hyundai Motor Group has made a groundbreaking decision to invest $5.8 billion in a new manufacturing facility in Louisiana. This first-of-its-kind site marks Hyundai’s inaugural North American steel facility, establishing a fully integrated, made-in-America supply chain to support its automotive manufacturing operations across the United States.

The ultra-low carbon steel production plant will be located on approximately 1,700 acres in Donaldsonville, Louisiana, anchoring the RiverPlex MegaPark on the Westbank of the Mississippi River in Ascension Parish. At approximately 17,000 acres, RiverPlex is the largest undeveloped tract along the deep-water Mississippi River. Hyundai Steel Company (HSC), a member of Hyundai Motor Group, is expected to create more than 1,300 direct new jobs with an average salary of $95,000. Louisiana Economic Development estimates the project will result in about 4,100 indirect new jobs, for a total of 5,400 potential new jobs in the Capital Region.

“Hyundai’s decision to invest nearly $6 billion in Ascension Parish speaks volumes about Louisiana’s skilled workforce, robust infrastructure and our ability to compete for innovative manufacturing facilities,” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry said. “This announcement makes clear that Louisiana’s manufacturing sector is roaring back, thanks to our historic tax reforms, our business-friendly approach and the many competitive advantages our state has to offer international powerhouses like Hyundai.”

Hyundai Steel Company

HSC plans to import an estimated 3.6 million tons of iron ore annually to the facility. Completed coils will be shipped out via rail and truck to customers, including Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, and U.S. automakers. The largest portion of steel manufactured in Louisiana will be sent to Hyundai Motor Company’s vehicle manufacturing plants throughout the U.S. The mill is expected to produce 2.7 million metric tons of steel annually.

The state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF) steel mill is expected to produce 70% lower emissions than traditional blast furnaces, aligning with the Hyundai Motor Group’s mission to advance sustainable energy solutions across all of its subsidiaries.

“Hyundai Steel’s investment in an electric arc furnace (EAF) based integrated steel mill in the U.S. is anticipated to stimulate local economic growth, including the creation of new job opportunities,” Hyundai Steel Company President and CEO Gang Hyun Seo said. “We plan to supply automotive steel plates not only for Hyundai Motor and Kia’s strategic models but also to expand sales to U.S. automakers in the future.”

Louisiana Economic Development

A major victory for the state, Louisiana Economic Development showcases its ability to support businesses or industries wanting to operate on a worldwide scale.

“The effort to attract and secure Hyundai Motor Group in Louisiana is the most recent example of how our whole-of-Louisiana approach is making our state more competitive by fostering an economic ecosystem that provides an ease of doing business,” Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois said. “Positioning Louisiana to win means working as a team with a focus on what matters: The people and future of our state. It offers residents new career opportunities that provide growing wages and a stake in a sustainable, thriving future.”

To win the project in Louisiana, the state offered HSC a competitive incentives package including a $100 million performance-based grant for infrastructure improvements. The company is also expected to participate in the state’s Quality Jobs program. Other infrastructure upgrades, including road, rail, electric and pipelines, will enable the full development of RiverPlex MegaPark, attracting future suppliers and customers.

Port of South Louisiana

HSC is partnering with the Port of South Louisiana to build a deep water dock on the Westbank of Ascension Parish to accommodate steel and materials shipments.

“Port of South Louisiana’s partnership on this game-changing project exemplifies the power of regionalism in driving economic progress that extends beyond political boundaries,” Port of South Louisiana CEO Paul Matthews said. “The benefits of Port of South Louisiana’s investment in this multi-use, deep-water dock will have a ripple effect across the entire region, bringing jobs to families and spurring long-term transformative growth and new investments to our communities. This project is a testament to what can be achieved when state and parish leaders, industries, and infrastructure partners collaborate toward a shared vision to reinforce Louisiana’s position as a national leader in manufacturing and global trade.”

Entergy Louisiana

To enable major economic development projects such as HSC’s plant, Entergy Louisiana has been working with the Louisiana Public Service Commission and other partners for several years to upgrade its generation and transmission systems. More recently, Entergy Louisiana is planning major transmission projects on the Westbank of the Mississippi River and in south central Louisiana that provide additional load-serving capacity for new economic development projects. These transmission projects, which include significant new high-voltage transmission lines, will enable Entergy Louisiana to serve major new developments like HSC and improve service reliability to all customers.

“This historic investment will help set up Louisiana for long-term economic success, creating thousands of high-quality jobs and positioning our state as a leader in next-generation, low-carbon steel production,”  Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May said. “Partnerships like this between industry leaders, elected officials, local communities and economic development partners are critical to driving transformative projects that benefit future generations. Entergy Louisiana is proud to support Hyundai Steel Company with the reliable, sustainable energy solutions needed to power such an ambitious and forward-thinking facility. Together, we are building a stronger, more sustainable future for our state.”

The HSC plant’s ultra-low carbon approach to steel sets an example for global manufacturing and lifts Ascension Parish onto the forefront of industrial innovation. By fostering cutting-edge technology steel production, Ascension Parish will secure long-term competitive advantages to attract more investment and create high-growth job opportunities.

Ascension Parish

“Ascension is proud to support businesses that drive both progress and opportunity for our citizens,” Ascension Parish President Clint Cointment said. “Through Hyundai Steel Company, we will see the creation of over 1,300 jobs, with many positions being filled by individuals trained right here in Ascension Parish. Education and training are essential in addressing poverty and inequality and laying the foundation for lasting economic growth. Today marks a milestone in our community’s journey toward a brighter and more prosperous future for all of Ascension.”

“This transformative investment from Hyundai Steel Company is a game-changer for Ascension Parish, introducing a new industry and creating abundant high-paying job opportunities for our community,” Ascension Economic Development Corporation President and CEO Kate MacArthur said. “By working closely with our partners, we remain committed to attracting new investment, developing a skilled workforce, enhancing our community, and driving long-term economic growth.”

Community College Workforce Program

To support the project’s workforce needs, River Parishes Community College and the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) will develop a new local workforce training center equipped with hands-on skills coaches from LED’s FastStart program and modern learning spaces to provide job-specific instruction and administrative assistance. HSC will also have access to the full suite of LED FastStart workforce recruitment, training and sustainability services.

“River Parishes Community College is honored to be the lead training and workforce development partner for this groundbreaking project,” River Parishes Community College Chancellor Quintin D. Taylor said. “Today’s announcement marks a generational opportunity for the citizens of Donaldsonville, the Westbank of Ascension Parish, and surrounding communities. We are committed and eager to provide the access and training needed to equip local residents and other prospective students with the skills required to seize the new career opportunities created by Hyundai Steel. As the River Region’s workforce solution, we are excited to partner with HSC to help meet their workforce needs. Finally, I’d like to extend my gratitude to Governor Landry and LED Secretary Bourgeois for bringing this transformative project to Louisiana and the Westbank of Ascension.”

Riverplex Megapark

“Hyundai Steel Company represents the largest single economic development project announcement in our region since the formation of BRAC in 2005, ”Baton Rouge Area Chamber (BRAC) President and CEO Lori Melancon said. “Located in the RiverPlex MegaPark — established in 2015 through a partnership between Ascension Economic Development Corporation, BRAC, LED, and local landowners — this investment will create significant opportunities across the region while advancing new low-carbon projects in the energy and manufacturing sectors. The vision of all involved in the RiverPlex MegaPark 10 years ago is now delivering dividends for our regional economy. Entergy Louisiana to power Meta’s data center in Richland Parish /news/entergy-louisiana-to-power-metas-data-center-in-richland-parish Fri, 06 Dec 2024 08:25:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-to-power-metas-data-center-in-richland-parish/ Investment in new infrastructure will transform Northeast Louisiana economy for generations

RICHLAND PARISH, La. – Entergy Louisiana is pleased to announce plans to invest in modern, efficient generation facilities and robust transmission infrastructure to support the region and Meta’s data center representing a $10 billion in investment in Richland Parish. Once completed, it will be Meta’s largest data center at more than 4-million square feet.

This transformative project promises to revitalize Northeast Louisiana’s economy, creating jobs, bolstering infrastructure and driving significant economic growth in the region, based on this project and others that may follow.

“Today marks a turning point for Northeast Louisiana,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “This is more than just an investment in infrastructure; it’s an investment in the people, businesses and communities of our state. Entergy Louisiana is proud to partner with Meta to bring this vision to life and support a project that will help shape the region’s future for decades to come.”

Just as Entergy’s founder, Harvey Couch, pioneered new power solutions nearly a century ago, Entergy Louisiana is building on its legacy of innovation and commitment to community growth. By constructing cutting-edge electric infrastructure, Entergy is laying the foundation for economic success in a region that has faced challenges such as population decline and outward migration.

Strategic site selection

Meta’s data center will be built on what is referred to as the Franklin Farm mega site, a more than 1,400-acre certified site, in Richland Parish, Louisiana, that boasts proximity to existing utility infrastructure and robust transportation routes. Entergy Louisiana  through its Ի platforms, emphasizing its potential for large-scale developments.

“We’re not going to just be powering a facility, we’re going to be empowering a community,” May added. “From job creation to infrastructure improvements, this partnership with Meta demonstrates what’s possible when innovative companies and communities come together to build a brighter future.

“Our team is proud to have played a significant role in assisting the State of Louisiana in recruiting this project to our state.”

Economic impact

. Louisiana will benefit far more than just the investment made Meta. Entergy Louisiana’s investment will also provide jobs to bolster our communities.

During construction, Entergy Louisiana projects will provide significant economic benefits and create:

  • 1,500 to 1,800 construction jobs for the new advanced generation units being constructed
  • 3,500 to 5,000 construction jobs for substation and transmission investment
  • 44 permanent jobs

Richland Parish, known for its rich agricultural history and community traditions, stands to benefit significantly from this development.

Infrastructure to power progress

To support the Richland Parish Data Center, as well as broader economic development in the state and our growing customer base, Entergy Louisiana will:

  • Build three combined-cycle combustion turbines with a combined capacity of 2,260 megawatts, two of which will be in Richland Parish
  • Construct two Entergy-owned substations and six customer-owned substations
  • Install nearly 100 miles of 500kV transmission lines and eight new 230kV transmission lines
  • Upgrade existing infrastructure, including a substation near Sterlington

Pending regulatory approval, the new generators are expected to come online between 2028 and 2029.

Shared costs and community benefits

Revenue from Meta will significantly offset the costs associated to make service available to the company’s data center and the region. Moreover, Meta will also share in the future cost of providing service like other customers including Formula Rate Plan costs, securitized storm costs and resiliency costs – this is expected to reduce costs that existing customers would otherwise pay by more than $300 million. Additionally, Meta has committed to contributing to Entergy’s The Power to Care program, matching $1 million in shareholder contributions to assist older adults and individuals with disabilities in paying utility bills.

Commitment to sustainability

Both Meta and Entergy Louisiana are committed to sustainability. The new generators will initially support the ability to utilize 30% hydrogen co-firing and, through future upgrades, the ability to transition to 100% hydrogen and incorporate carbon capture and sequestration technology.

Meta has also committed to helping fund CCS technology at an Entergy power plant in Lake Charles as well as 1,500 megawatts of new solar and storage resources, complementing Entergy Louisiana’s .

The companies have also committed to exploring nuclear energy as a future power supply option alongside renewable sources like solar and wind. This effort includes researching conventional nuclear technologies, supporting small modular reactors and potential upgrades to enhance the output of existing nuclear plants in Southeast Louisiana.

Meta selects Entergy, Northeast Louisiana as site of $10B data center /news/meta-selects-entergy-northeast-louisiana-as-site-of-10b-data-center Thu, 05 Dec 2024 08:26:00 +0000 /blog-post/meta-selects-entergy-northeast-louisiana-as-site-of-10b-data-center/ Governor Jeff Landry Calls Investment ‘A New Chapter’ for State
  • Project is expected to result in 500 or more direct new jobs, more than 1,000 indirect jobs and 5,000 construction workers at peak.
  • Expansive technology campus will occupy 4 million square feet on the 2,250-acre former Franklin Farm mega site.
  • Entergy worked with Meta to address energy needs, and Meta will match its electricity use with 100% clean and renewable energy.

RICHLAND PARISH, La. – Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta announced it will build a $10 billion artificial intelligence data center in northeast Louisiana, a transformational investment that cements the state’s status as a major innovation hub and puts this picturesque rural community on the leading edge of a global digital revolution.

Meta projects the data center will support 500 or more direct new jobs in Richland Parish. LED estimates the project will result in the creation of more than 1,000 indirect jobs, for a total of more than 1,500 potential new jobs in the Northeast Region. The company estimates 5,000 construction workers at peak of construction on the 2,250-acre former Franklin Farm megasite that sits between the municipalities of Rayville and Delhi, about 30 miles east of Monroe.

“Today, Louisiana begins a new chapter. Today, we are delivering new jobs and economic growth on a scale unimaginable before we took office,” Governor Jeff Landry said. “Meta’s investment establishes the region as an anchor in Louisiana’s rapidly expanding tech sector, revitalizes one of our state’s beautiful rural areas, and creates opportunities for Louisiana workers to fill high-paying jobs of the future. I thank Meta for their commitment to our state, and to the State Legislature for positioning Louisiana to win this project by passing new tax reform legislation that attracts capital investment and improves Louisiana’s business tax climate.”

Hyperscaler data centers such as the one planned for Richland Parish are housed in huge physical structures designed to process the vast amounts of data required to support digital technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads. The facility is the largest of more than 20 Meta data centers around the world.

“Meta is building the future of human connection and the technology that makes it possible. And this data center will be an important part of that mission,” said Kevin Janda, Meta Director of Data Center Strategy. “Richland Parish in Louisiana is an outstanding location for Meta to call home for a number of reasons. It provides great access to infrastructure, a reliable grid, a business-friendly climate, and wonderful community partners that have helped us move this project forward. We’re thrilled to be a new member of the Richland Parish community and are committed to investing in its long-term vitality.”

LED expects the project, one of the largest private capital investments in the state’s history, to spark new economic activity and investments throughout northeast Louisiana as multiple industries benefit from the billions of dollars invested. Meta makes a concerted effort to source labor and materials locally, and partners with local schools and organizations to advance STEAM education and digital skills that can be used to compete in the digital workforce.

“This project is an example of what Louisiana can accomplish when economic development partners play offense rather than waiting for good projects to come to them,” LED Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois said. “Louisiana has been actively positioning itself as a hub for AI innovation, with plans to support startups, grow a skilled workforce, and shape forward-thinking policy. Meta’s historic investment is just the beginning of a bold strategy to drive economic growth through AI, expand and diversify the state’s tech sector, and prove to the world that when Louisiana says that we are ready to compete on the global stage, we mean business.”

To power the data center, which at its largest point extends more than one mile from front to back, Entergy will add clean, efficient power plants to its system to meet growing power demands, including from the data center. Meta has pledged to match its electricity use with 100% clean and renewable energy and will be working with Entergy to bring at least 1,500 MW of new renewable energy to the grid through its Geaux Zero program. In addition, Meta has committed to contribute up to $1 million a year to Entergy’s “The Power to Care” low-income ratepayer support program, a figure that will be matched by Entergy Louisiana.

“This partnership underscores Entergy Louisiana’s commitment to powering progress and driving innovation,” Entergy Louisiana President and CEO Phillip May said. “By supporting this transformational investment, we are not only delivering the energy needed today, but also building the infrastructure that will support a brighter, more sustainable future for all of Louisiana. Together, we’re laying the foundation for economic growth that will benefit generations to come. We could not be more proud to play a critical role in this monumental endeavor.”

In addition to Meta’s commitment to match its electricity usage with clean and renewable energy, the company prioritizes water stewardship in its operations, including minimizing water use at its data centers. Meta has pledged to restore more water than it consumes at this data center by investing in water restoration projects in Louisiana.

To support both the construction and eventual operation of the data center, Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) has committed $250,000 in Workforce Rapid Response funding to Delta Community College to develop programs and expand capacity. Delta will scale up its construction trades programs to meet the initial construction needs, and partner with peer institutions experienced in developing and delivering curricula for data center operations.

“The parish is excited about the project we look forward to assisting in every way,” Richland Parish Supervisor Joey Evans said. “I am so proud of the collaboration and cooperation among our state, regional, parish and local partners. The manner in which the communities of Rayville, Holly Ridge and Delhi came together to make this project a reality speaks volumes about our parish’s ability to rise to any challenge.”

Meta expects construction to continue through 2030 with site work beginning in December. The company has also committed to invest more than $200 million in local infrastructure improvements, including roads and water systems.

The company is expected to take advantage of a new Louisiana incentive program, established by Act 730, that offers qualifying projects a state and local sales and use tax rebate on the purchase or lease of data center equipment. Meta is also expected to participate in the state’s Quality Jobs program.

“This project will create a transformational change for the residents of the entire Northeast Region,” Grow NELA President and CEO Rob Cleveland said. “Meta chose northeast Louisiana because of the availability of reliable, low-cost energy; access to flat, developable land and a business-friendly environment led by Governor Landry. This project opens the floodgates for data center development in Louisiana, and we are prepared for what’s ahead.”

Entergy aims to power economic progress through new infrastructure /news/entergy-aims-power-economic-progress-through-new-infrastructure Tue, 26 Mar 2024 09:30:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-aims-power-economic-progress-through-new-infrastructure/ EDITOR’S NOTE: A copy of the filing made with the Louisiana Public Service Commission can be .

Company’s blueprint to support burgeoning needs of businesses and industry

JEFFERSON, La. – To power the state’s economic progress from Metairie to Monroe, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles and beyond, Entergy Louisiana will begin executing a strategic blueprint for building new electric infrastructure that meets the burgeoning needs of businesses and industry to power job growth throughout the state.

Louisiana has a generational opportunity that is set to create new jobs, new investment and additional revenues for local governments as local business and industries and new companies seek to grow in our state. It is an opportunity that is being driven, in large part, by what the state already has to offer such as prime operating locations along waterways like the Mississippi River and access to the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the availability of a well-trained workforce, feedstocks and clean, reliable and affordable power.

In response, Entergy is doing its part to support economic development and the communities it serves by powering this opportunity with investments in all levels of its power grid. This investment is in addition to Entergy’s long-standing investment in job training programs in Louisiana to develop and prepare a workforce that will benefit from this economic growth opportunity.

At the transmission level, Entergy plans to build a new 500/230kV substation in Iberville Parish and nearly 60 miles of new 230kV transmission lines that would cross five parishes from Iberville to Jefferson. These transmission components were included in a filing made recently with the Louisiana Public Service Commission; it is one of several related filings Entergy plans to make this year with the Commission.

“Louisiana industries all across our state have steadfastly supported our workforce and local communities for many years,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “At Entergy, we are committed to sustaining a partnership with them by meeting their growing demand for clean, reliable and affordable power.”

In addition to the transmission-related filing, Entergy has proposed a that, if approved by the Commission, would upgrade transmission- and distribution-level electric equipment across its Louisiana service territory. This plan would strengthen the power grid for the benefit of all customers and help protect local communities and economy from future weather threats.

On the generation side, the company is also taking steps to make sure customers have access to clean energy through renewable sources. Increasingly, companies are turning to their utility provider to help them meet sustainability goals, and to do this, Entergy has gotten innovative by electrifying ports, for example, and is working to develop the largest in Louisiana history.

In addition, the company is making sure it can balance supply and demand by maintaining a diverse mix of generation resources that include not only renewables, but also nuclear and natural gas. To meet the unique needs of customers near the coast that are vital to local and national economies, the company recently that would be called Bayou Power Station.

Bayou Power Station proposed to enhance coastal reliability and resilience /news/bayou-power-station-proposed-enhance-coastal-reliability-resilience Thu, 07 Mar 2024 03:13:00 +0000 /blog-post/bayou-power-station-proposed-enhance-coastal-reliability-resilience/ 112-megawatt facility would support area vital to local and national economies

BATON ROUGE, La. – Entergy Louisiana filed a request with the Louisiana Public Service Commission for approval to construct the Bayou Power Station. This transformative project represents a significant investment in the region’s energy infrastructure, aimed at bolstering resilience and reliability for communities and industries along the coast that are vital to local and national economies.

The proposed $411 million Bayou Power Station would be a 112-megawatt floating natural gas power station, equipped with black-start capability and the ability to rapidly start- up and ramp-down. Situated atop a barge across from a substation in Leeville, the power station would play a crucial role in supporting areas like Port Fourchon, Golden Meadow, Leeville and Grand Isle through a microgrid system.

While providing jobs and commodities, these areas, which are part of what is referred to as the Bayou Region, play a vital role in our nation’s energy security. For example, hundreds of companies use Port Fourchon, which services 95% of the Gulf of Mexico’s deepwater energy production and handles 10-15% of the nation’s domestic and foreign oil, as a base of operation. Meanwhile, the strip from Golden Meadow to Grand Isle serves as a hub for the seafood industry, which accounts for one out of every 70 jobs in Louisiana and has a multi-billion-dollar annual economic impact. There are also many companies in the area that provide manufacturing and other services to both the energy and seafood industries.

Key components of Entergy Louisiana’s overall project would include the construction of Bayou Power Station, expansion of the Leeville substation and transmission connections to ensure seamless power delivery. The microgrid system would provide essential backup power during outages, serving a diverse mix of residential, commercial and industrial customers, including vital industries located at Port Fourchon.

“Whether you’re located in a big city, small town or along the coast, Entergy Louisiana is committed to providing our customers with affordable and reliable power,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “Our customers in areas like Grand Isle, Golden Meadow and Port Fourchon play an important role in our state’s tourism and seafood industries and energy sector, and the Bayou Power Station is a unique solution to meeting their power needs into the future.”

The Bayou Power Station aligns with Entergy Louisiana’s strategy to integrate various energy resources — including natural gas, nuclear and renewables — to balance supply and demand effectively. Further, the project would support a more reliable and resilient energy ecosystem, capable of meeting the unique needs of customers in an area with challenging geography and aiding in recovery efforts following major storms.

The addition of Bayou Power Station would complement projects that have been completed over the past couple years to build resilience into the electric system near the coast. Some examples of these projects include the , which was elevated 20 feet off the ground on a concrete platform; with about 80 steel structures between Cut Off and Golden Meadow; and along Louisiana Highway 1 from Leeville to Grand Isle and taking strategic steps to fortify the overhead electric system in the area.

BROUSSARD, La. – Entergy Louisiana representatives, local officials and community leaders gathered today in Broussard to celebrate the opening of a new operations hub aimed at providing exceptional electric service to Acadiana customers.

The new state-of-the-art Broussard service center connects various departments, such as power deliver and customer service, to create a more efficient and seamless operation to help meet customers’ expectations.

About 80 employees, ranging from engineering and design to distribution line work will be based out of the approximately 63,000-square-foot campus along Highway 90 East. The campus will serve nearby cities and towns including Broussard, Youngsville, Maurice and some residents near St. Martinville and Greater Lafayette.

“We’re excited to announce the completion of the Broussard service center as it adds strength and resilience to our operations in Acadiana,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “This was not only an investment in our workforce, but also in an investment in Broussard and the communities we serve in the area.”

I thank Entergy for choosing to locate in our great city.”

Entergy purchased the property in Broussard, encompassing eight buildings, in 2021. Facilities were renovated to include an open office area, meeting rooms, storeroom and lay down yard, among other features.

The service center building is rated to withstand winds of up to 140 mph and has a reinforced storm room for employees to use during times of severe weather. It was also outfitted with a generator and redundant fiber to ensure business continuity following storm impacts.

This investment supports economic development in the Acadiana region and will make our company and communities more resilient during times of severe weather.

Entergy Louisiana seeks approval to add nearly 225 megawatts of solar power to its generation mix /news/entergy-louisiana-seeks-approval-add-nearly-225-megawatts-solar-power-its-generation-mix Fri, 03 Mar 2023 09:35:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-seeks-approval-add-nearly-225-megawatts-solar-power-its-generation-mix/ Two facilities selected to provide power pending regulatory approval

BATON ROUGE, La. – To meet customers’ growing demands for renewable energy and support economic development in the state, Entergy Louisiana this week filed a request with the Louisiana Public Service Commission to approve the purchase, construction and operation of nearly 225 megawatts of new solar power resources.

Entergy Louisiana has selected two projects to source additional solar energy, including one in Iberville Parish that would account for approximately 175 megawatts and another in Ouachita Parish that would account for approximately 49 megawatts. If approved by the Commission, Entergy Louisiana will be able to increase its renewable portfolio and help meet the growing demand for clean generation.

“This is another step toward not only reaching our own sustainability goals, but also toward helping our customers reach their sustainability goals,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “The desire for clean power is increasing and, at Entergy, we intend to meet that desire in a way that balances our ability to continue providing reliable and affordable power. We’re excited about the potential addition of nearly 225 megawatts and look forward to further expanding our portfolio of renewables as demanded by our stakeholders.”

Under Entergy Louisiana’s proposal before the Commission, the company would enter a 20-year purchase power agreement with Coastal Prairie Solar, LLC, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of NextEra ϳԹ Resources, LLC, for energy produced by its solar facility to be built in Iberville Parish. Also, under the proposal before the Commission, Entergy Louisiana would build and operate what would become the Sterlington Solar Facility in Ouachita Parish.

If approved, construction would tentatively begin in the spring of 2024 with the Iberville facility fully operational in late 2025. The Iberville facility would be followed by the Sterlington Solar Facility, which is expected to deliver clean power to the grid in early 2026.

The proposal also includes a request for authorization to include the new solar resources within the recently approved green tariff Geaux Green Option, or Rider GGO. This is a voluntary program that allows customers the opportunity to subscribe to, and get benefits from, renewable energy resources. Adding these resources to the Rider GGO resource portfolio will further assist Entergy Louisiana customers with meeting their environmental and sustainability goals.

Entergy Louisiana currently has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the¬†, which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. Along with nuclear generation, nearly 25% of the company’s portfolio comes from renewable resources. In addition, the Commission recently approved¬†¬†of solar power. To meet the growing demands of our stakeholders, Entergy Louisiana has several thousand megawatts of renewable capacity in various stages of planning and procurement that will be brought to the Commission for approval in the near future.

“We continue to work hand-in-hand with our local communities and elected officials across the state,” added May. “I want to thank those who have assisted us in bringing these sites to fruition, especially at the parish level, and look forward to what’s on the horizon for our state.”

In June 2022, ϳԹ discussed plans for up to seven gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2025, and as much as 14 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2031. The company previously announced a commitment to achieving .

These projects are another milestone in the modernization of Entergy’s power generation portfolio, helping meet customers’ needs for cleaner, more efficient and diverse energy solutions. Learn more about our renewable energy generation growth at entergy.com/renewable-energy.
