But for Waterford 3’s Radiation Protection TechnicianLisa Parks, nuclear energy is not just her profession, but a passion.

In 2016, Parks started her Entergy career as a decontamination technician at New York’s Indian Point ϳԹ Center, which closed in 2021. But quickly she realized she wanted more.

“I knew I didn’t want to stop there,” Parks recalls. “I looked into radiation protection, took the test, earned my quals, and became an RP technician. It’s something I love doing and I’m very passionate about it.”

Parks’s journey led her to Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station in Kilona, La., where she has spent the past three years expanding her expertise in a fast-paced environment, monitoring contamination and radiation levels while ensuring the safety of the public and plant personnel. “It’s fun to me,” she said. “I feel like you never work a day in your life if you enjoy what you are doing.”

Mentorship played a critical role in Park’s development. She credits retired RP TechDuaneMilleras a key figure in her career, as well asBrittany Scott, a former Arkansas Nuclear One technician who inspired her. “I remember my second planned maintenance and refueling outage, seeing Scott at the desk, confidently explaining nuclear concepts like it was her first language. I told myself, ‘I want that to be me one day.’”

Years later Parks found herself in that very position, knowledgeable, respected and helping guide work crews through RP procedures. “I looked back and realized that I had achieved my goal.”

Leadership and the power of representation

Parks isn’t the only woman making strides at Waterford 3. She highlights the impact ofMelody (Mel) Gibson,RPmanager, as a trailblazer. “Mel started in housekeeping and is now the radiation protection manager. That is major. She came in dominating, bringing new ideas and pushing our program forward.”

Beyond her leadership role, Gibson serves as a mentor and advocate. “She pushes you to be the best version of yourself,” Parks said. “She’s paving the way for future women in the industry.”

Advice for women and the next generation of female nuclear professionals

For young women considering careers in STEM and nuclear, Park’s message is clear: never stop learning.

“Use your resources and learn as much as you can. If you want to get a degree in nuclear, go for it. Find a mentor, that’s one of the biggest things. There are people willing to teach, and that’s a good thing.”

Lisa also encourages women to push past limitations. “When they tell you what you can’t do, show them what you can do.”

Her final advice to the future generation of female nuclear professionals? “Never limit yourself.”

BATON ROUGE, La. – Entergy Louisiana and Monarch ϳԹ, a company known for its green hydrogen and electro-fuels projects, have signed a memorandum of understanding to help advance the energy infrastructure in South Louisiana. As part of the agreement, Entergy Louisiana will work with Monarch ϳԹ to leverage existing transmission infrastructure and/or construct new generation resources to supply long-term renewable power to Monarch’s 300-megawatt green hydrogen electrolyzer project near Donaldsonville, Louisiana.

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to bring this project to Louisiana,” said Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana. “Our state is primed for an economic boom in the coming years, and this agreement will help foster that growth. Together with Monarch, we know we can build a stronger, more resilient Louisiana.”

Monarch ϳԹ’s hydrogen electrolyzer project represents a potential $400+ million investment in Ascension Parish, creating over 300 construction jobs and over 44 permanent operational jobs. Monarch ϳԹ began development of the facility in 2022 and expects to commence commercial operations in 2027.

“Entergy Louisiana’s commitment to providing renewable power to industrial customers like Monarch ϳԹ is a critical piece of advancing the Royale Electrolyzer project,” said Ben Alingh, co-founder and CEO of Monarch ϳԹ. “Louisiana presents an excellent opportunity for green hydrogen production with the existing industrial workforce, development friendly local communities, and experienced industrial hydrogen consumers.”

Entergy Louisiana has a distinct locational advantage as it sits in the heart of South Louisiana’s hydrogen producers, storage infrastructure and industrial customers. In addition to safe, reliable power, these new and emerging customers are seeking access to renewable energy sources.¬† To meet those customer needs and help the state grow through economic development, Entergy Louisiana recently made the largest renewable power expansion request in state history by filing a request with its regulator, the Louisiana Public Service Commission, for approval to add an additional three gigawatts of solar power to its generation portfolio.

Collectively, 3,225 megawatts of solar power are in the approval queue for potential construction, development and placement on the grid through agreements with Entergy Louisiana, a major step forward in meeting the sustainability needs of its current and future customers.

Entergy Louisiana seeks approval to add nearly 225 megawatts of solar power to its generation mix /news/entergy-louisiana-seeks-approval-add-nearly-225-megawatts-solar-power-its-generation-mix Fri, 03 Mar 2023 09:35:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-seeks-approval-add-nearly-225-megawatts-solar-power-its-generation-mix/ Two facilities selected to provide power pending regulatory approval

BATON ROUGE, La. – To meet customers’ growing demands for renewable energy and support economic development in the state, Entergy Louisiana this week filed a request with the Louisiana Public Service Commission to approve the purchase, construction and operation of nearly 225 megawatts of new solar power resources.

Entergy Louisiana has selected two projects to source additional solar energy, including one in Iberville Parish that would account for approximately 175 megawatts and another in Ouachita Parish that would account for approximately 49 megawatts. If approved by the Commission, Entergy Louisiana will be able to increase its renewable portfolio and help meet the growing demand for clean generation.

“This is another step toward not only reaching our own sustainability goals, but also toward helping our customers reach their sustainability goals,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “The desire for clean power is increasing and, at Entergy, we intend to meet that desire in a way that balances our ability to continue providing reliable and affordable power. We’re excited about the potential addition of nearly 225 megawatts and look forward to further expanding our portfolio of renewables as demanded by our stakeholders.”

Under Entergy Louisiana’s proposal before the Commission, the company would enter a 20-year purchase power agreement with Coastal Prairie Solar, LLC, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of NextEra ϳԹ Resources, LLC, for energy produced by its solar facility to be built in Iberville Parish. Also, under the proposal before the Commission, Entergy Louisiana would build and operate what would become the Sterlington Solar Facility in Ouachita Parish.

If approved, construction would tentatively begin in the spring of 2024 with the Iberville facility fully operational in late 2025. The Iberville facility would be followed by the Sterlington Solar Facility, which is expected to deliver clean power to the grid in early 2026.

The proposal also includes a request for authorization to include the new solar resources within the recently approved green tariff Geaux Green Option, or Rider GGO. This is a voluntary program that allows customers the opportunity to subscribe to, and get benefits from, renewable energy resources. Adding these resources to the Rider GGO resource portfolio will further assist Entergy Louisiana customers with meeting their environmental and sustainability goals.

Entergy Louisiana currently has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the¬†, which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. Along with nuclear generation, nearly 25% of the company’s portfolio comes from renewable resources. In addition, the Commission recently approved¬†¬†of solar power. To meet the growing demands of our stakeholders, Entergy Louisiana has several thousand megawatts of renewable capacity in various stages of planning and procurement that will be brought to the Commission for approval in the near future.

“We continue to work hand-in-hand with our local communities and elected officials across the state,” added May. “I want to thank those who have assisted us in bringing these sites to fruition, especially at the parish level, and look forward to what’s on the horizon for our state.”

In June 2022, ϳԹ discussed plans for up to seven gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2025, and as much as 14 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2031. The company previously announced a commitment to achieving .

These projects are another milestone in the modernization of Entergy’s power generation portfolio, helping meet customers’ needs for cleaner, more efficient and diverse energy solutions. Learn more about our renewable energy generation growth at entergy.com/renewable-energy.

River Bend Station begins 22nd refueling outage /news/river-bend-station-begins-22nd-refueling-outage Tue, 14 Feb 2023 06:23:00 +0000 /blog-post/river-bend-station-begins-22nd-refueling-outage/ Work boosts local economy by bringing in 1,900 additional workers

ST. FRANCISVILLE, La. – Control room operators removed Entergy’s River Bend Station from service on Feb. 11 to begin its 22nd scheduled refueling and maintenance outage. Entergy is making a multi-million-dollar investment in River Bend to complete the refueling and other important projects. That investment translates to additional economic activity for dozens of vendors and more than 1,900 contract workers, many from outside the area.

“Our scheduled refueling outage is essential to ensure River Bend continues operating safely and reliably,” said Bruce Chenard, River Bend’s general manager of plant operations. “It supports our role in producing clean, carbon-free nuclear energy for our stakeholders—our customers, communities, employees and owners.”

Work will be completed by more than 650 full-time River Bend employees and supported by Entergy employees from its other nuclear plants and contract workers, including pipefitters, millwrights, ironworkers, carpenters, boilermakers, electricians, laborers, valve technicians, engineers, operating engineers and radiation protection technicians.

The influx of contract workers and their associated spending will boost the local communities economically.

“The surrounding parishes have always supported the station during our refueling outages,” said Chenard. “We appreciate the community’s support during this time of increased activity at our site and outside in the local businesses and community.”

River Bend Station achieved commercial operation in 1986 and is licensed to operate through mid-2045. As a clean, carbon-free energy source, River Bend is an important contributor to helping Entergy meet its commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans and Diamond Offshore Wind seek to evaluate offshore wind /news/entergy-louisiana-entergy-new-orleans-diamond-offshore-wind-seek-evaluate-offshore-wind Sat, 24 Sep 2022 07:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-entergy-new-orleans-diamond-offshore-wind-seek-evaluate-offshore-wind/ Companies partner on the future development of offshore wind power to serve Louisiana customers

JEFFERSON, La. – Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans and Diamond Offshore Wind, a subsidiary of Diamond Generating Corporation, today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding regarding the evaluation and potential early development of wind power generation in the Gulf of Mexico. The agreement could put Entergy in a position to deliver another source of clean power to customers while also strengthening the region’s economic development.

“This is an important first step to possibly bring wind power to our Louisiana shores,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “While there remains work to be done before that happens, we are excited by the opportunity to begin this process. We aspire to help our communities thrive for generations to come, and this marks yet another milestone in honoring that mission.”

“Clean and affordable power is a driver of economic growth, resulting in increased investments and good paying, green jobs in our communities,” added Deanna Rodriguez, Entergy New Orleans president and CEO. “Entergy New Orleans understands the importance of serving customers with clean energy to reduce the impacts of climate change and doing so in a way that keeps service affordable to families and businesses in New Orleans. This agreement creates another possible avenue to meet those demands.”

The MOU provides a legal framework for Entergy and Diamond Offshore Wind to work toward the development of potential offshore wind demonstration projects located in Louisiana state waters and will focus in the near term on the evaluation of grid interconnection to determine the optimal size and locations of future offshore wind development.

Earlier this year, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards submitted the Louisiana Climate Action Plan, which offered a series of recommendations that can lead Louisiana to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – a key action from that plan is to achieve five gigawatts of offshore wind generation by 2035. Development of wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico will accelerate the state’s role as a leader in renewable energy development, and drive collaboration between state and federal agencies, utilities, the private sector, and our states colleges and universities. Entergy is proud to be a leader in this exciting future for Louisiana.

“Diamond Offshore Wind is pleased to announce our partnership with Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans to explore building the first offshore wind project in Louisiana state waters and in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Chris Wissemann, CEO of Diamond Offshore Wind. “Louisiana has a tremendous opportunity to develop an offshore wind industry that services the entire country, and through this project, we hope to accelerate its development, create jobs, provide a renewable source of power to Louisiana customers, and help Louisiana meet its climate goals.”

Entergy Louisiana currently has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the , which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. Along with nuclear generation, nearly 30% of the company’s portfolio comes from renewable resources. In addition, the LPSC recently approved of solar power with an additional 2,000 megawatts in the queue.

Entergy New Orleans’ diverse generation portfolio includes the 20-megawatts New Orleans Solar Station and the soon to be completed Iris Solar and St. James Solar projects, which will add an additional 70 megawatts of clean energy. In addition, the company has 5 megawatts of solar installed on commercial and residential roofs. Together with nuclear, these carbon-free resources account for nearly 40% of the company’s generation capacity and will continue to decrease Entergy New Orleans’ carbon emissions, which today are already nearly 40% below the national average.

ϳԹ has been an industry leader in voluntary climate action for more than two decades. In 2001, the company was the first U.S. electric utility to commit to voluntarily stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions. That goal has since been accelerated with a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, Diamond Offshore Wind, its parents, and affiliates bring decades of experience successfully developing, constructing, and operating major energy assets, both domestically within the U.S. and internationally, including seven commercial scale offshore wind projects and 13 offshore wind transmission projects.

About Diamond Offshore Wind

Diamond Offshore Wind is a wholly owned subsidiary of Diamond Generating Corporation (DGC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, and was formed by DGC to develop, own, and operate offshore wind projects in the U.S.

Building on MC’s success in the global offshore wind market and DGC’s deep experience and outstanding performance as a U.S. independent power producer, Diamond Offshore Wind is uniquely positioned to be a strong, long-term leader in the burgeoning U.S. offshore wind market.

In the web post, Marshall highlighted Entergy’s continued commitment to investing in and restoring Louisiana’s landscapes.

He wrote, “Business growth and sustainability are ever more interdependent. Companies relying on the natural resources of our earth to support their value chains are competing against the backdrop of unpredictable climate change impacts. The need to adapt to growing regulatory, environmental and consumer pressures is a must. Today, a commitment to corporate stakeholders is a commitment to doing more than just protecting what’s left of our environment. It is a commitment to restoring what we have lost. And that is where landscape scale restoration comes in.”

Restore the Earth Foundation’s analysis found that for every dollar invested in reforestation in Louisiana’s Tensas National Wildlife Refuge by Entergy and other corporate sponsors, almost $33 in social value and more than $3 of direct market value are created and returned to community stakeholders. With an initial investment of $1.5 million in financial capital, the community and other stakeholders see a return of about $120 million in financial, manufactured, human, social and natural value over 40 years, for a total return on investment of approximately 36 to 1.
