FRANKLINTON, La. – Entergy Louisiana and D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) today announced the start of commercial operations at Sunlight Road Solar, located in Washington Parish. The 50-megawatt solar facility in Franklinton, developed and built by DESRI, will supply power to Entergy Louisiana’s grid through a 20-year power-purchase agreement.

With more than 100,000 photovoltaic panels, Sunlight Road Solar will generate enough electricity to power approximately 11,500 homes, helping meet Louisiana’s growing demand for renewable energy. It will also contribute to economic development across the state as businesses and industries increasingly rely on utilities like Entergy to help them achieve their sustainability goals.

“With the addition of Sunlight Road Solar, we’re taking another step toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for our state,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “This milestone represents more than just adding solar power to our portfolio; it’s about providing affordable, reliable and clean energy to our customers. We’re excited about what this means for the future of power in Louisiana as we continue to meet the growing demand for renewables and work toward a net-zero future.”

Entergy Louisiana customers are expected to save approximately $22 million over the term of the Sunlight Road Solar power purchase agreement. The facility utilizes single-axis tracking technology, allowing the solar panels to follow the sun throughout the day to maximize energy production.

”DESRI is thrilled to have developed and constructed another renewable energy project in partnership with Entergy to support its customers”, said Hy Martin, DESRI chief development officer. “We are grateful to Sunlight Road Solar’s many stakeholders including Washington Parish, Entergy, our landowners, project lenders, Nevados, and Primoris Renewable şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř, and look forward to continuing investments in clean, cost-competitive energy that create opportunities across Louisiana and the broader Gulf Region.”

Sunlight Road Solar is the fourth solar resource Entergy Louisiana has added to its grid.

The company plans to bring the nearly 50-megawatt Sterlington Solar facility online sometime in 2026. The solar facility will be owned and operated by Entergy Louisiana and located next to the Sterlington Power Station, one of the company’s oldest power plants in north Louisiana.

These milestones align with Entergy’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To learn more about how the company is incorporating renewable energy into its power generation portfolio to benefit customers, communities, and the environment, visit entergy.com/renewable-energy.

Entergy seeking to boost economic development in Louisiana through renewable power expansion /news/entergy-seeking-boost-economic-development-in-louisiana-through-renewable-power-expansion Fri, 17 Mar 2023 03:38:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-seeking-boost-economic-development-in-louisiana-through-renewable-power-expansion/ Company requests approval to add up to three gigawatts of solar energy

BATON ROUGE, La. – Louisiana has the potential to see significant investment by new and emerging companies due to its unique access to infrastructure and skilled workforce. An imperative to attracting these opportunities is safe, reliable power – and increasingly important, access to renewable power. To do its part to protect the environment and help the state grow through economic development, Entergy Louisiana recently made the largest renewable power expansion request in state history.

On March 13, the company with its regulator, the Louisiana Public Service Commission, for approval to add an additional three gigawatts of solar power to its generation portfolio. This is on top of the the company requested earlier this month. In that regulatory filing, Entergy Louisiana sought approval for approximately 175 megawatts from a facility in Iberville Parish and approximately 49 megawatts from what would become the Sterlington Solar Facility in Ouachita Parish.

Collectively, 3,225 megawatts of solar power are in the approval queue for potential construction, development and placement on the grid through agreements with Entergy Louisiana, a major step forward in meeting the sustainability needs of its current and future customers.

“Like never before, our state has opportunity to retain businesses, support expansion projects and attract new companies on a global scale, but it’s going to take meeting their operational and sustainability needs,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “Our latest request for up to three gigawatts of renewable power, the largest such expansion request in state history, shows we’re serious about not only protecting the environment by reducing our carbon footprint, but also continuing to be a major driver of economic development. This is not only a net-positive for our company and industries, but for the future of our state.

“I’m incredibly thankful to the countless local partners and officials who are helping bring projects such as these to the finish line. These are true partnerships that are formed for the betterment of Louisiana.”

The individual resources that make up the three-gigawatt proposal would be constructed in Louisiana, meaning local communities and economies would benefit from job creation and additional tax revenues generated during construction of the facilities. In addition, further diversifying the company’s generation portfolio will help protect all customers from the volatility of natural gas prices and other factors outside of Entergy’s control.

Currently, Entergy Louisiana has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the Capital Region Solar facility, which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. Along with nuclear generation, nearly 25% of the company’s portfolio comes from carbon-free resources.

These solar additions in Louisiana are consistent with şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř’s plans for as much as 15 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2031. The company previously announced a commitment to .

Entergy Louisiana receives approval to purchase 475 MW of solar power, add green tariff option /news/entergy-louisiana-receives-approval-purchase-475-mw-solar-power-add-green-tariff-option Thu, 22 Sep 2022 05:31:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-receives-approval-purchase-475-mw-solar-power-add-green-tariff-option/ Agreement to significantly grow company’s renewable resources in the state

BATON ROUGE, La. – Entergy Louisiana today received approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission to grow its portfolio of renewable power by adding 475 megawatts of new-build solar generating capacity, which will nearly triple the company’s total renewable generating capacity in the state.

The commission also approved the company’s Geaux Green option, a new green tariff – the first in the state – which will provide customers the opportunity to subscribe to, and get benefits from, renewable energy resources. Geaux Green will offer an additional option for Entergy Louisiana customers interested in renewable sources and, for some, help them address their sustainability goals.

“Our customers are increasingly interested in renewable energy, and the LPSC’s approval of these resources enables Entergy to bring more solar power to Louisiana and offer a green tariff to interested customers,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “We continue to make great strides toward expanding our green portfolio and these solutions will help us continue to provide more affordable, cleaner and more reliable power today and into the future.”

Under the approved contracts, the company will receive carbon-free power from four solar facilities across the state, including:

  • Vacherie Solar şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř Center – a 150-megawatt resource in St. James Parish.
  • Jacques Louisiana Solar – a 150-megawatt resource in St. James Parish.
  • Elizabeth Solar – a 125-megawatt resource in Allen Parish.
  • Sunlight Road Solar – a 50-megawatt resource in Washington Parish.

Most sites are expected to begin delivering power to customers in 2024, with the St. Jacques facility coming online in 2025, subject to receipt of local permits and approvals.

Once constructed and ready to connect to the power grid, Entergy Louisiana will purchase power from the Vacherie, Sunlight Road and Elizabeth solar facilities under 20-year agreements. The St. Jacques solar facility will be under a build-own-transfer agreement, meaning Entergy will own and maintain the facility after construction is complete. The 350 megawatts of solar energy resources in St. James and Washington Parish sites will be built by D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments (DESRI) while the Allen Parish facility will be built by Opdenergy.

“DESRI is pleased to provide Entergy and its customers with another 350 megawatts of clean energy projects with this important milestone,” said Hy Martin, Chief Development Officer of DESRI. “Delivering reliable, affordable energy to Entergy Louisiana while producing economic growth in local communities is essential to DESRI’s partnership with Entergy and more broadly across the country.”

Entergy Louisiana currently has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the Capital Region Solar facility, which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020.

More information will be available in the coming weeks on enrollment opportunities for Geaux Green.

In June 2022, şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř discussed plans for up to 7 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2025, and as much as 14 to 17 gigawatts of renewable resources by the end of 2031. These Louisiana solar facilities are another milestone in the modernization of Entergy’s power generation portfolio, helping meet customers’ needs for cleaner, more efficient and diverse energy solutions. Green Select program open soon to Entergy Louisiana customers /news/green-select-program-open-soon-entergy-louisiana-customers Sat, 23 Apr 2022 02:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/green-select-program-open-soon-entergy-louisiana-customers/ Renewable program available for those who opt-in

BATON ROUGE, La. – Entergy Louisiana customers will soon be able to take advantage of a program that allows them to align a portion of their monthly electric usage with renewable energy credits.

Beginning this May, the Green Select option gives residential and business customers in Louisiana the power to match some or all of their electricity usage with clean, renewable energy generated in state. Participating customers can benefit from resources like the site in West Baton Rouge through the use of renewable energy certificates (RECs). RECs represent the environmental attributes of renewable electricity generation such as wind and solar and are integral to renewable electricity products. Offering customers the option to reduce the impact of their electricity usage through RECs is another way Entergy Louisiana is supporting customer interest in renewable options. The company has proposed additional renewable options for customers that are still pending regulatory approval from the Louisiana Public Service Commission.

“Green Select gives our customers another tool to help reduce their carbon footprint,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “Our communities are increasingly asking us for clean-energy offerings, and this program will help our businesses and customers meet those goals in helping sustain a bright future for the state.”

Entergy Louisiana operates one of the cleanest power generation fleets in the nation. Today, about 30% of the energy Entergy Louisiana customers use is clean, coming from sources that don’t emit carbon dioxide, such as hydropower, solar and nuclear energy.

As the first U.S. utility to voluntarily set a greenhouse gas emissions goal in 2001, today the company operates one of the cleanest large-scale power generation fleets in the country, as noted by the independent Benchmarking Air Emissions Report. The company has climate goals that reach into future decades, too. Our carbon dioxide reduction goal is 50% reduction in utility emission rate by 2030 compared to 2000 levels and net zero emissions by 2050.

Capital Region Solar Facility Serving Entergy Louisiana Customers /news/capital-region-solar-facility-serving-entergy-louisiana-customers Thu, 22 Oct 2020 03:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/capital-region-solar-facility-serving-entergy-louisiana-customers/ Entergy Louisiana customers are now receiving power from the largest solar facility in the state. Capital Region Solar, a 50-megawatt solar facility located in West Baton Rouge Parish, began serving customers this month.

“Capital Region Solar is the latest addition to what we envision to be a growing portfolio of clean-energy resources serving our customers,” said Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana. “We are committed to delivering clean, reliable and affordable energy to our communities, and this project helps us do just that.”

Entergy Louisiana is purchasing the power generated by Capital Region Solar, a 50-megawatt solar plant constructed in West Baton Rouge Parish, under a 20-year agreement with Helios Infrastructure, a joint venture between Nationwide and Sol Systems. The agreement went into effect Oct. 9.

“This landmark project for Louisiana sets the bar for the triple bottom line benefits of sustainable infrastructure,” said Jessica Robbins, senior director, structured finance at Sol Systems. “We are especially appreciative to work with forward-thinking companies like Entergy and their customers who are leading the way to a more sustainable future.”

The project, which was built by DEPCOM Power, consists of approximately 197,000 solar panels occupying about 560 acres of land near Port Allen. The power produced by the site will offset the equivalent of nearly 19,000 passenger vehicles’ emissions in one year.  The plant adds to Entergy Louisiana’s approximately 190 megawatts of renewable resources. Entergy Louisiana’s portfolio also includes the state’s two largest sources of carbon-free energy – Waterford 3 and River Bend nuclear units. Together, the two units produce about 17% of the state’s energy and account for 94% of the state’s carbon-free energy.

Entergy Louisiana understands that in order to advance the state’s economic development activities, it needs to continue developing renewable energy solutions that will help attract new businesses to the state and grow and retain existing businesses that create new jobs and capital investment to the communities we serve. Entergy Louisiana recognizes that customers are increasingly interested in renewable energy. In coordination with regulators, Entergy Louisiana is working to expand its portfolio of energy solutions, while achieving the company’s sustainability goals. As part of its plan to continue expanding its clean-energy portfolio for the benefit of customers, Entergy Louisiana has issued a request for proposals to add up to 300 megawatts of utility-scale solar resources that would be in service by 2023.

The Capital Region Solar facility generated approximately 350 jobs during construction and will bring approximately $6.4 million in tax revenue to the surrounding region over the next 30 years, according to research done by DEPCOM. The group focused on hiring local contractors and veterans during the construction process. DEPCOM’s sale of the project to Helios Infrastructure was announced in September.

“DEPCOM is proud to be part of Louisiana’s clean energy program. Working alongside local craftsmen and businesses made the success of the plant construction possible. Since project inception, DEPCOM G.I.V.E.S has donated over $200,000 to area charities, supporting local food banks, education programs and veteran affairs programs in honor of the Capital Region Solar project. We look forward to continuously serving the community and providing 24/7 plant operations and maintenance support services for the next several years,” said Johnnie Taul, president of DEPCOM Power.

In addition to providing reliable, cost-effective power, Entergy’s investments in its generation portfolio transformation and nuclear improvements since 2000 have resulted in substantial reductions in the company’s greenhouse gas emissions, highlighting Entergy’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

In 2001, şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř became the first U.S. electric utility to voluntarily commit to capping greenhouse gas emissions. The company set a new emissions strategy in 2019 with its announcement of a goal of reducing its carbon emission rate by 50% below year 2000 levels by 2030.ĚýĚýĚýĚý

Let the Sun Shine In /news/let-sun-shine-in Wed, 14 Aug 2019 02:35:00 +0000 /blog-post/let-sun-shine-in/ Work underway on solar power plant in West Baton Rouge Parish

BATON ROUGE, La. – Construction has begun on one of the largest solar facilities currently planned for Louisiana.

Capital Region Solar, a 50-megawatt solar plant being built by DEPCOM Power in West Baton Rouge Parish, will add another source of renewable energy for Entergy Louisiana customers. Entergy Louisiana is purchasing the output from the solar farm under a 20-year agreement.

Approximately 197,000 solar panels will be used to complete the facility on about 560 acres of land near Port Allen. Once complete in the second quarter of 2020, it will offset the equivalent of nearly 19,000 passenger vehicles’ emissions in one year.

“Louisiana is undergoing tremendous growth and we need to be ready to deliver low-cost, diverse energy sources to help sustain that growth,” said Phillip May, president and CEO of Entergy Louisiana. “Our generating portfolio is among the cleanest in the nation and this solar plant is one part of our ongoing commitment to offering our customers clean, reliable and economic energy.”

The solar plant will generate approximately 350 jobs during construction and will bring approximately $6.4 million in tax revenue to the surrounding region over the next 30 years, according to DEPCOM Power.

DEPCOM Power will provide the engineering, construction and operations and maintenance services for the project. DEPCOM’s core values align with Entergy’s own sustainability goals, which include local workforce development and training and improving our communities.  DEPCOM will seek to invest in the local community, working to hire local services and labor, with a special focus on hiring U.S. veterans, during construction of the facility.

“DEPCOM is proud to help serve Entergy Louisiana’s clean energy program, designing and building an economical, efficient, high energy output utility solar facility.  In honor of the project, DEPCOM’s philanthropy organization, DEPCOM G.I.V.E.S, will also seek to provide impactful donations to local charities supporting the impoverished, veterans, education and community solar outreach needs,” said Johnnie Taul, president for DEPCOM Power.

The power from the solar project will add to Entergy Louisiana’s approximately 190 megawatts of renewable resources, which includes run-of-river hydro, biomass and waste heat recovery. Entergy Louisiana’s portfolio also includes the state’s two largest sources of carbon-free energy – Waterford 3 and River Bend nuclear units. Together, the two units produce about 16% of the state’s energy and account for 92% of the state’s carbon-free energy.

şÚÁĎłÔąĎÍř recognizes that customers increasingly seek more control of their energy decisions and more renewable solutions. Working with regulators, Entergy is expanding and customizing our portfolio of energy solutions, while achieving our sustainability goals. The Capital Region Solar facility will provide a new, long-term, renewable source of energy for Entergy customers.
