“Our region has faced intense and prolonged winter weather this January, leading to increased energy usage as customers worked to keep their homes warm,” said Elizabeth Adams, Entergy chief customer officer. “Higher usage can lead to higher-than-normal bills, but we’re here to help with a variety of resources, tools and payment options to support our customers through the winter season.”

Extreme weather impact and historic energy demand

January brought prolonged stretches of below-freezing temperatures to many communities across Entergy’s service area. In the Greater New Orleans area, snowfall totals exceeded eight inches, breaking the previous official record of 2.7 inches set in 1963. Southwest Louisiana and the Capital Region also saw record-setting snowfall, with some areas accumulating up to a foot.

During January, metropolitan areas across Entergy’s service area experienced prolonged stretches of temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below the average low. In fact, temperatures in our region were consistently lower than normal through January 26.

It takes a lot of power to heat homes, and this increased energy consumption can lead to higher-than-normal bills. For example, if it is 90 degrees outside and you want to cool your home to 72, that is a difference of 18 degrees. Meanwhile, if it is 30 degrees outside and you want to warm your home to 68, that is a difference of 38 degrees. The wider the temperature difference, the harder your system works.

This extreme weather caused historic energy consumption as customers relied heavily on heaters and other appliances to stay warm. Entergy and its subsidiaries, excluding Entergy Mississippi, experienced a new peak load of approximately 21,336 megawatt-hours during the week of January 20, surpassing the previous record by nearly 790 MWh. Entergy Louisiana saw the highest percent increase at 7.2%.

ϳԹ usage varies by household

While cold weather drives increased energy consumption, the impact on individual customers varies based on numerous factors, such as thermostat settings, home size, insulation and location.

Resources to track usage and manage bills

Entergy’s Bill Toolkit is a one-stop resource connecting customers to tools and information to better manage their energy bills. The toolkit offers guidance on tracking energy usage, understanding bill projections and accessing payment assistance options. Key resources include:

  • myAdvisordashboard: Gives customers an estimate of what projected energy usage costs could be by the end of the billing cycle.
  • Bill analyzer tools:Help customers understand changes in their energy consumption and plan accordingly.
  • Differentpaymentoptions:Programs like Level Billing, AutoPay and Pick-A-Date can provide a more consistent monthly bill and offer control over payment schedules.

These tools empower customers to make informed decisions, monitortheir energy consumption and budget effectively.

Billassistanceoptions

Entergy is committed to supporting customers with various bill management resources:

  • Deferred payment arrangements:Customers may be able to spread payments over time by putting in a request through myEntergy or the mobile app or by calling over the phone.
  • Low Income Home ϳԹ Assistance Program (LIHEAP): Federally funded assistance for eligible households.
  • The Power to Care:Provides emergency bill payment assistance for seniors and disabled individuals through local nonprofit partners.
  • partnership:Entergy has partnered with Single Stop, a free resource that helps customers check eligibility for federal, state and local benefits.

Proactive winter preparedness

With winter weather not yet over, Entergy urges customers to take proactive steps to weatherize their homes and improve energy efficiency. Simple measures, such as caulking, sealing windows and doors or using programmable thermostats, can help reduce energy usage and costs.

Customers in need of assistance or interested in bill management resources are encouraged to visitor contact Entergy at 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749).

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans update on winter weather preparations /news/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-update-on-winter-weather-preparations Tue, 21 Jan 2025 07:11:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-update-on-winter-weather-preparations/ NEW ORLEANS – As Louisiana braces for potentially historic winter weather, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of customers and restoring power as quickly and safely as possible should outages occur. Both companies have completed extensive patrols of their systems and taken additional measures to prepare for severe conditions.

Utility infrastructure can face unique challenges during extreme cold weather, such as heavy, wet snow combined with gusty winds, which can weigh down tree limbs and stress power lines along with an increased demand due to the frigid temperatures.

To assist in potential restoration efforts, 1,600 workers are on standby ready to support our communities statewide. However, customers should anticipate slower restoration times due to icy road conditions and cold-load pickup challenges.

As a reminder, out of an abundance of caution, both companies have made the decision to suspend disconnects through Sunday, Jan. 26.

Proactive Winter Preparations

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans have implemented comprehensive steps to prepare for and mitigate the impact of the extreme cold, including:

  • Completed system patrols to identify and address vulnerabilities.
  • Insulating critical power plant equipment using improved methods and materials that allow them to withstand lower temperatures.
  • Insulating or draining piping within power generation facilities with potential for standing water during normal operation, to prevent freezing and breaks.
  • Inspecting and maintaining substations and transmission lines that are critical to Bulk Electric System reliability.
  • Inspecting and testing equipment that can be impacted by extreme cold, such as gas-filled circuit breakers.
  • Additional vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line.

As our teams prepare, we encourage our customers to prepare as well. Entergy’sprovides a list of safety tips, bill management assistance and energy efficiency resources to keep families safe and warm throughout the winter season.

Restoration Challenges

While crews are ready to respond, icy roads and other winter hazards are expected to slow travel and restoration efforts. Additionally, cold-load pickup, the increased energy demand that occurs when power is restored to systems impacted by extreme cold, may delay restoration times.

We’re storm ready, 365 days a year

To ensure our company and customers are prepared for the winter weather ahead, we continue to implement unique readiness plans at each power plant and review measures taken with transmission lines and transmission facilities, while reviewing critical systems and infrastructure preparedness across the grid.

When a weather threat arises, we. We use forecasts and computer models based on experience with previous storms to predict damages and associated restoration resource needs. Based on those estimates, the company may call onif needed to aid in restoring power safely and quickly for our customers. Entergy continuously plans and improves the process of assessing damage, positioning personnel in the right place with the required materials to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

We take steps to maintain and control vegetation across our service area, completing annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact from fallen trees or branches following a storm. Prior to storms impacting our area, vegetation crews perform pre-storm patrols of circuits to mitigate any imminent threats within the right of way. Our year-round storm preparations include the vegetation management program and the targeted “ground to sky”vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line. We also use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help predict when trimming may be needed.

Entergy Louisiana preparing for colder temperatures /blog/entergy-louisiana-preparing-for-colder-temperatures Thu, 16 Jan 2025 22:01:16 +0000 /?p=13460 Colder temperatures have arrived, with even more frigid weather expected in the coming weeks and months. Even in places where extremely cold temperatures are not persistent, it’s still important to be prepared for freezing and inclement weather. As we know, cold snaps can happen without much warning.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s, a developing La Niña is expected to persist through the winter season. We can expect a warmer and drier season for our four-state service area. However, a sudden stratospheric disturbance or SSD is possible this season which can lead to short but extremely cold weather fronts like those we endured in recent years.

Over the past few years, parts of our service area experienced severe winter weather that brought high winds, freezing rains and ice accumulation. While weather can be unpredictable, we remain storm ready no matter the season.

Staying safe in ice and snow /blog/staying-safe-in-ice-snow Sat, 05 Feb 2022 00:11:00 +0000 /staying-safe-in-ice-snow Winter weather has arrived in our service area, which presents several challenges to those who rarely experience snowy, icy conditions. From removing snow and ice to dressing appropriately and avoiding falls, winter safety should always be top of mind. Stay safe and warm this season with the following tips.

To stay warm:

  • Cover every part of your body — including your face — and wear layers of loose-fitting clothing to protect against frostbite and hypothermia. In cold weather, your body actually loses heat faster than it can produce it.
  • Stay inside when temperatures are dangerously cold. And remember that certain people are at higher risk than others, especially the elderly.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for any person whose body temperature falls below 95°F.

To get around safely:

  • Wear sensible footwear when streets and sidewalks are snow-covered and icy. Flat-soled shoes with treads — not smooth soles — make it easier to plant your entire foot securely on the surface, which improves balance. Water-resistant boots designed to protect your feet from the cold are also a good choice.
  • Walk slowly and take shorter steps in icy, snowy conditions. This allows for adequate reaction time if you suddenly encounter a slippery patch of pavement.
  • Wear bright clothing so others can see you in wintry conditions. Something as simple as a colorful scarf or hat can make a big difference.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. When walking, always look ahead to anticipate any change in conditions, such as a patch of ice or uneven pavement. Avoid using headphones that block out the sound of oncoming vehicles.

To remove ice and snow:

  • Take time to stretch before you start to shovel snow. This helps prevent injury, especially because you’ll be using muscles that may have been inactive for a while.
  • Avoid heavy lifting. A better approach is to push the snow off to the side because it requires less exertion, and that means less stress on your body.
  • Take water breaks. Just as you would during any physical activity, it helps you stay adequately hydrated. Periodic rests are a must, especially if you’re not accustomed to this type of intense activity.
  • Use a shovel with a long arm and a blade that’s somewhat flat. It will be easier on your back. Lifting heavy snow is never a good idea, but if you must, bend at the knees and let your legs do the work.

This winter, avoid accidents and stay warm by heeding these tips for staying safe in icy, snowy conditions.

Creating a Winter Wonderland at Home? /blog/creating-winter-wonderland-at-home Tue, 04 Dec 2018 22:00:00 +0000 /creating-winter-wonderland-at-home BATON ROUGE, La. – Radio stations are playing holiday music and twinkling lights line the main streets in town. For some, part of the celebration of the season involves decorating their house with lights.

Entergy Louisiana has some bright ideas to help put safety first this holiday season with a few simple reminders and precautions.

Inside lighting:

  • Examine all lights before putting them on the tree or using them in other home decorations. Do not use lights with frayed wiring or loose sockets, and make sure they have been tested for safety by an independent testing laboratory.
  • For greater efficiency and safety, use smaller, cool-burning LED lights.
  • Make sure all light sockets have bulbs in them. Children are fascinated by lights and could put their fingers in empty sockets.
  • Be careful not to overload extension cords, outlets or even whole circuits in the house.
  • Turn off decorative lighting when you leave the room.
  • Place wires where they cannot trip anyone. Do not run them under rugs.
  • If decorating a live tree, make sure it is fresh and green, with needles that are hard to pull from the branches.
  • Place the tree in a stand with water, well away from heaters or the fireplace. Check water daily.
  • Keep bulbs from touching tree branches. Never burn candles on or near the tree and never use flammable decorations.
  • Never use lights on a metallic tree. If the lights become faulty, the entire tree could be electrified.

Outside lighting:

  • Make sure the lights used are designated for outdoor use.
  • Use a non-conducting fiberglass or wooden ladder when working with strings of lights. Also, stay clear of all overhead wires.
  • Do not replace bulbs when the electricity is on.
  • Never let light bulbs touch flammable materials such as plastic or dry grass and leaves.
  • For outside use, work only with three-wire grounded extension cords.
  • Use rubber gaskets in light sockets or hang sockets downward to keep water out.
  • Keep connections and lights off the ground by hanging them over wooden stakes.
  • Turn outside lights off when away from home or asleep.

Customers should keep in mind that, according to the , between 2012-2016, U.S. fire departments responded to an average 170 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. These fires caused an average of four deaths, 15 injuries, and $12 million in direct property damage annually. In nearly 27 percent of the Christmas tree fires and in 80 percent of the deaths, some type of heat source, such as a candle or equipment, was too close to the tree. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 43 percent of home Christmas tree fires.

Entergy Louisiana, LLC provides electric service to more than 1 million customers and natural gas service to nearly 93,000 customers in the greater Baton Rouge area. With operations in southern, central and northeastern Louisiana, the company is a subsidiary of ϳԹ.

ϳԹ is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, including nearly 9,000 megawatts of nuclear power. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.9 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of approximately $11 billion and more than 13,000 employees.

Tips and Tricks to Help Manage Winter ϳԹ Usage /blog/tips-tricks-help-manage-winter-energy-usage-1443 Fri, 02 Feb 2018 00:22:00 +0000 /tips-tricks-help-manage-winter-energy-usage-1443 Louisiana’s normally mild winters don’t typically result in high energy bills. However, in parts of Entergy’s service area, temperatures recently reached 20 to 30 degrees below average. In fact, temperatures in our region were consistently lower than normal during the past month.

Those long stretches of low temperatures mean cranked-up furnaces and heaters for Entergy customers. That means increased energy usage, which can crank up energy bills, too.

“Weather is an important factor in determining how high or low an energy bill may be,” said Melonie Stewart, vice president of customer service for Entergy in Louisiana. “We’ve come to expect higher bills in summer when we run our air conditioners 24/7. But with the cold weather we’ve experienced recently, it’s important to remember that turning up the heat impacts bills, too.”

If your energy bill was higher than usual this month, here are some ideas:

  • Find out why. You can dig deeper into your bill with Entergy’s Analyze My Bill. This interactive tool allows customers to compare their energy usage (and the temperatures in their area) over time and learn more about fuel costs. With this knowledge, customers can pinpoint the best ways to save money. Check it out here: /analyzemybill.
  • Request more time. Qualifying customers who need additional time to pay their bill can call our automated answering system at 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749) to request an extension or request an extension through myAccount at /extension.
  • Get assistance. There are times when everyone needs a little help. When your income won’t stretch any further, we have programs available for both emergency bill payment assistance and long-term relief. Learn more: /our_community/bill_help.aspx.

With several more weeks of winter ahead, future cold snaps are likely. These tips will help you manage billing and usage, so you can stay comfortable without breaking the bank:

  • Make your bill more predictable. Level billing can help you with your monthly budget. With level billing, your energy bills are averaged over a rolling 12-month period, making them about the same amount each month. Sign up here: /features/levelbill.aspx.

Implement energy-saving tips to reduce usage and save money

NEW ORLEANS – With temperatures forecasted in the low 30s south of Lake Pontchartrain and possible snow forecasted on the Northshore, it is safe to say that winter has arrived in the New Orleans area.

While these cold conditions aren’t expected until Friday, now is the time to implement energy-saving tips so you can reduce your usage and keep more cash in your wallet.

“Saving on energy costs doesn’t have to mean giving up comfort,” said Melonie Stewart, director of customer service. “There are many quick, do-it-yourself projects that can help keep your home nice and warm while keeping the cold air outside where it belongs.”

Here are the top five winter energy savers:

  • Adjust the thermostat. During the winter months, grab a sweater or a blanket to stay toasty, and set the thermostat to 68 degrees. Every degree higher can add 3 percent to your bill. So if you crank the heat up to 78 degrees, you’ve already added 30 percent.
  • Conserve hot water. Wrap your electric water heater with a water heater blanket that can be found at your local home improvement store and set the thermostat to 120 degrees or medium.
  • Replace air and furnace filters every 30 days or as required by the type of filter.
  • When you change your light bulbs, replace them with newer, energy-efficient models that use less energy and last longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Seal air leaks. Install weather stripping around your doors, windows and any location where there may be a path between the inside and outside of your home.

Other tips include:

  • Keep all doors and windows closed when the heat is on.
  • Open drapes to let warm sunlight in during the day. Close them at night to reduce heat loss.
  • Schedule a heating system checkup with a licensed professional if you haven’t already done so.
  • Do not block heat registers or air returns with curtains or furniture.
  • Close the damper on fireplaces when not in use.
  • Set the thermostat back to 55 degrees if away from home for several days.

More tips, as well as clear, do-it-yourself videos, to help put these ideas to work can be found at entergy.com/savemoney. Orleans Parish customers can also visit , a New Orleans program that offers incentives and rebates on a variety of energy-efficiency upgrades year-round.

“Extreme temperatures in any season can bring spikes in your energy usage,” Stewart added. “Now is also a good time to sign up for Level Billing that helps you eliminate those spikes by paying an average amount each month. This is extremely helpful in managing your budget.”

Other convenient payment options include:

  • Pick-A-Date, which allows customers to choose the date when their bills are due.

Winter is Coming: The Time to Implement ϳԹ-Saving Measures is Now /news/winter-coming-the-time-implement-energy-saving-measures-now-1907 Wed, 07 Dec 2016 12:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/winter-coming-the-time-implement-energy-saving-measures-now-1907/ Helpful tips make it easy to reduce usage and save money

BATON ROUGE, La. – While warmer-than-normal temperatures this fall may have you thinking that winter isn’t coming, it’s right around the corner. In fact, low temperatures are forecasted to drop this week and stay cold for a couple of nights in a row.

That’s why there’s no time like the present to implement helpful energy-saving tips so you can keep the cash in your wallet while keeping the cold outside where it belongs.

“We’ve had a couple of cooler periods over the last few weeks, but cold weather really hasn’t impacted us yet this year,” said Sheila Pounders, director of customer service. “Now is a good time to remind yourself that saving energy does save money in the winter, just as it does during the summer. And our helpful tips can get you started before the heater kicks on full-time.”

Heating and air conditioning can account for as much as 55 percent of your monthly electric bill. Setting the thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter is an easy way to reduce how much energy you use. Every degree above 68 on the thermostat can increase your bill by about 3 percent. So if you crank it up to a toasty 78 degrees, you’ve already added 30 percent. Other tips include:

  • Seal leaks around your doors and windows to make your home more energy-efficient.
  • Check air and furnace filters every 30 days or as required by the type of filter. Clean or replace them as needed.
  • Conserve hot water. Wrap your electric water heater with a water heater blanket and set the thermostat to 120 degrees or medium.
  • Close the damper on fireplaces when not in use.
  • When you change your light bulbs, replace them with energy-efficient models. Entergy recommends ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs that use 70 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Set the thermostat back to 55 degrees if away from home for several days.

More tips, as well as clear, do-it-yourself videos, to help put these ideas to work can be found at entergy.com/savemoney. Entergy Louisiana customers can also visit , a program that offers incentives and rebates on a variety of energy-efficiency upgrades year-round.

“Now is also a good time to sign up for Level Billing to help eliminate the spikes extreme temperatures can bring,” Pounders added. “The program calculates your billing history over the previous 12 months and allows you to pay an average amount each month. This is extremely helpful in managing your budget.”

Other convenient payment options include:

  • Pick-A-Date, which allows customers to choose the date when their bills are due.
  • Automatic Monthly Payments, which save customers the trouble of writing and mailing checks.

Entergy also assists qualified elderly and disabled low-income customers through its customer-assistance fund, The Power to Care. The program is administered by local Councils on Aging and is funded by Entergy employees, customers and shareholders. To find out how to get assistance, or to contribute to the fund, visit or check the donation box on your monthly bill.
