During a virtual award ceremony in October, U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie A. Su recognized Entergy alongside 838 other recipients who have demonstrated a commitment to hiring veterans and ensuring they have a long-term career and growth plan that uses the diverse skills they acquired through their military service.

“I am proud to be part of an organization that understands the value that veterans add – in our company and in our communities,” said Tina Morton, Entergy’s Veterans Employee Resource Group president and senior project manager, nuclear. “Our VERG team is an important part of instilling the knowledge to others that we (veterans) are assets in leadership, display adaptability to change, have diverse perspectives, are problem solvers, and have a strong work ethic and integrity – all of which are necessary for success.”

Entergy continues to meet rigorous employment and veteran integration assistance criteria, including veteran hiring and retention percentages; availability of veteran-specific resources; leadership programming; dedicated human resource efforts; pay compensation and tuition assistance programs. The VERG is an employee-led group committed to supporting the unique needs of veterans, active-duty military and their families.

It’s a WIN win again: Entergy Women in Nuclear “most reactive” chapter /news/it-s-win-win-again-entergy-women-in-nuclear-most-reactive-chapter Fri, 07 Jun 2024 06:42:00 +0000 /blog-post/it-s-win-win-again-entergy-women-in-nuclear-most-reactive-chapter/ National award recognizes excellence in promoting nuclear science in the community

JACKSON, Miss. – Entergy’s Women in Nuclear chapter has been recognized again by the U.S. WIN organization as the “most reactive” chapter. It is the second time in as many years the chapter has gained national recognition for their educational outreach efforts, this time for their work during 2023’s National Nuclear Science Week.

Chapters are judged on the number of activities held during NSW, the number of participating U.S. WIN members, the number of individuals and public sectors reached and the variety of topics covered.

“It was the dedication, hard work and leadership our team demonstrated last year that allowed us to be awarded, for the second year in a row, the Most Reactive Chapter for 2023’s Nuclear Science Week,” said Danielle Andreozzi, Entergy Nuclear design engineer and fleet president of Entergy’s U.S. WIN chapter. “I am so proud to be a part of this organization and company. I have personally seen the effects advocating for nuclear and STEM careers has on students and the local community.”

Entergy has a WIN chapter at each of its four nuclear power plants in Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana, as well as at its headquarters in Jackson. Chapters from all five sites participated, with some putting on multiple events. Among the outreach efforts were:

  • Nuclear and STEM-related activities and giveaways for visitors at the Mississippi Children’s Museum hosted by WIN volunteers from Entergy Nuclear’s Echelon headquarters
  • STEM Day and National Science Day events at Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson, Miss. for girl scouts, boy scouts, a local youth council and students ranging from middle school to high school
  • A STEM Fair hosted by River Bend Station in St. Francisville, La. for Bains Elementary fifth grade students
  • Nuclear Science Days at Russellville Middle School held by Arkansas Nuclear One WIN members in Russellville, Ark. for hundreds of sixth- and seventh-grade students
  • A nuclear and STEM-related activities event hosted by Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station in Killona, La. for K-12 students at the Killona Community Center in the after-school program
  • Nuclear advocacy letters to Mississippi legislators from Entergy Nuclear headquarter employees

In all, their efforts reached more than 1,500 school children, teachers, parents, legislators and other community members.

“This year’s competition for the Most Reactive Chapter was fierce,” said Jennifer Watkins, Nuclear Science Week lead for the U.S. WIN communications committee. “We had submissions from 10 chapters who all did an amazing job with their outreach efforts. The creativity and diversity in events were fantastic. Approximately 3,000 individuals of all ages were able to explore nuclear science topics—and that doesn’t even cover those who were reached via social media! We love seeing how our chapters promote and support nuclear energy as a carbon-free energy source in our communities.”

U.S. Women in Nuclear is an organization of individuals who work in nuclear energy and technology fields around the United States. Their vision is aimed at positioning the United States for the future of nuclear energy and technology through the advancement of women.

Nuclear Science Week, held the third week in October, is an international, broadly observed, week-long celebration to focus local, regional, national and international attention on all aspects of nuclear science.

Webber selected as 2024 “Women in STEM” honoree /blog/webber-selected-as-2024-women-in-stem-honoree Sat, 02 Mar 2024 02:52:00 +0000 /webber-selected-as-2024-women-in-stem-honoree Award recognizes leaders in the STEM field who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and made an impact across New Orleans

When Kenyon Webber, Entergy senior lead nuclear engineer, moved to the Greater New Orleans area, she wanted to continue her involvement with STEM-related programs and organizations. Webber initially worked with STEM NOLA, but more recently became involved with FIRST Robotics competitions, Girl Scouts of Louisiana, Girls in STEM at Tulane and STEM Goes Red with the American Heart Association. She also a board member with STEM Library Lab and the 1881 Institute.

For her outstanding leadership in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math across New Orleans, Webber has been selected by the American Heart Association and Entergy as one of six 2024 “Women in STEM” honorees.

“This honor means so much to me because it aligns with my personal values, and the STEM Goes Red program has allowed me the opportunity to reach so many young ladies that may not have otherwise been introduced to STEM programs,” Webber said. “STEM GOES RED gives them hands-on experiences and the opportunity for me to encourage the young ladies to pursue majors that may be outside their comfort zone.”

Webber says underrepresentation by females in engineering is a motivator for her involvement in these programs. It allows her to show young women that there are females advocating in the industry and to spark their interest in STEM careers.

“It is also important to introduce them to the many aspects of engineering available to them and to help them understand their own capabilities,” she said.

Webber will be recognized at the 2024 Go Red for Women Luncheon on Friday, March 1 with the other honorees.

“We are incredibly thankful for the work that Kenyon Webber has done to advance STEM in our community. She is the true definition of ‘Girl Power’, and we look forward to recognizing her at our luncheon,” said Jodi Williams, development director for the American Heart Association in Greater New Orleans. “The American Heart Association and Entergy are dedicated to fostering the next generation of female STEM leaders. We believe we must continue to invest in STEM with the knowledge that improvements can always be made, and transformative information can always be uncovered.”

“We are empowering young girls to take a seat at the table and dedicate their minds to advancing the STEM fields,” she continued. “We acknowledge the journey our honorees have taken to become a STEM leader and are excited to be honoring them this year.”

The American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all, is working to close the gender gap in STEM careers. The goal is to deepen the pipeline of women entering STEM careers by exposing middle to high school age girls, but also all students, to the innovative strides women are making in fields like health care and engineering.

Johnson-Thomas Recognized for Excellence by Alcorn State University /blog/johnson-thomas-recognized-for-excellence-by-alcorn-state-university Tue, 02 Oct 2018 20:31:00 +0000 /johnson-thomas-recognized-for-excellence-by-alcorn-state-university The Metro-Jackson Alcorn Alumni Chapter recently held its inaugural Leading Alcornites Under 50 awards gala. This event recognized leading graduates of Alcorn State University, who have made great strides in their community and career and who have encouraged others to attend the university. Entergy Nuclear’s own Alisha Johnson-Thomas, supervisor of supplier QA, was among the list of 15 distinguished graduates honored.

Alcorn State is a historically black university and the oldest land-grant institution in America. Founded in 1871, during the Reconstruction-era, to provide higher education opportunities for freedmen, the university counts highly regarded graduates such as Medgar Evers, Myrlie Evers-Williams, Alex Haley and Steve McNair.

Thomas understands the importance of Alcorn University and this award. “I have met life-long friends, made mistakes because I thought I had it all figured out, learned from those mistakes, interned with the best Fortune 500 company, Entergy, and landed an entry-level chemist position with Entergy upon graduation 27 years ago,” she said.

Thomas has held several positions from senior radiochemist to water treatment specialist. Her work has aligned with Entergy’s Nuclear Excellence Model built around a set of values of Safety, Teamwork, Always Learning, Integrity and Respect, which is referred to as “STAIR.”

Vice President of Independent Oversight Oscar Limpias has seen her commitment to the STAIR values of Safety and Integrity benefit Entergy Nuclear in substantial ways. One, in particular, was as a water treatment specialist.

“Chemical injections to the circulating water system were performed manually, and it was not an exact science for determining the amount of chemicals needed to ensure the integrity of the service water heat exchangers were maintained, said Limpias. “An automated system was developed and implemented that fed chemicals into the circulating water system at the exact rate and concentration; thereby, ensuring the integrity of plant piping internals, maintaining corrosion control, minimizing chemical waste and decreasing chemical cost.”

For her innovative contributions to the company, Thomas was awarded the Entergy Peak Performer Award for two consecutive years. This was an award she received while working at Grand Gulf.

Thomas believes that there is no idea too small to implement and to start making a difference; it all starts with “you.” She carries that belief with her inside the walls of the fleet and outside into the community.

“It means the world to me to know that my work, professionally and socially, has not gone unnoticed,” Thomas concluded. “To be recognized by the institution that prepared me for the successes that I have achieved since graduating is icing on the cake.”

The Leading Alcornites Under 50 inaugural gala will raise money to provide scholarships for deserving students at Alcorn State University and to continue to cultivate graduates like Thomas whom may become valuable additions to the Entergy Nuclear family.
