For those of us who have seen one too many movies featuring mobsters, the term “fixer” might have a nefarious connotation. However, for Entergy Mississippi team member Andrew Hearn’s daughter, it describes what her father does for a living and what she wants to do when she grows up. As a serviceman in the Rankin network, Hearn is often called out to “fix things” and restore power to customers following storms or other power interruptions.

Having worked with Entergy for more than 20 years, Hearn has a tremendous amount of experience keeping the lights on, serving in the Madison network, the Jackson network, the Distribution Operations Center and, for the past several years, the Rankin network. Throughout his time at Entergy, from the training he received during the three-month boot camp at Entergy’s Knowledge and Skills Training Center in Clinton to his current work, safety has been stressed.

“The trainers stress safety from day one,” said Hearn. “They would teach what to do and how to do it safely. We want to go home at the end of the day and they want us to return to our families, so they preach safety.”

Hearn’s family, including his wife, Melissa, and daughters, Reagan and Ellery, is at the heart of the reason that safety is so important to him. They know how hard he works and when he is called at night or on weekends to restore power for other families. Ellery takes it especially hard when he leaves but is very proud of the work he does.

“She always makes it a point to tell me to be careful,” said Hearn. A talented artist, Ellery loves to draw and has given him artistic reminders to be safe that he carries in his truck.

Hearn has long admired custom-made glove and sleeve bags but found they were not very budget-friendly. Instead of ordering an expensive custom bag, he took a standard-issue glove and sleeve bag and gave Ellery the opportunity to customize it for him. While her only instructions were to have fun, her artistic touch did more than make the bag more attractive, it also reinforced the safety messages that are stressed on the job each day, with the phrases “Be safe, Daddy” and “I ♥ you” added along with the butterflies, stars and hearts she drew on the bag.

“I love my job, but my family is the reason I do it,” said Hearn. “My family is my life.”

It is often said that “experience is the teacher of all things.” This is especially true when it comes to safety, which Hearn learned first-hand. Four years ago, he was involved in a serious accident and spent 13 days in the hospital and six months recuperating before returning to work.

“I take a lot of pride in my work and in doing it right,” said Hearn. “I missed something and made an error. I was fortunate to walk away, eventually, but that day opened my eyes.”

That experience and others during his 20+ years in the industry have shaped him so that he lives safely and shares the gospel of safety with others, starting with his family and reminding them to be safe. He provides his daughter with her own PPE—a yellow safety vest and gloves—when she helps him with tasks outdoors. She wears them with pride.

He also helps give Arcs and Sparks demonstrations in the community, helping both children and adults understand the importance of respecting electricity and how to stay safe around power lines. He serves as the safety chairperson for the Rankin office and previously served as a representative on Entergy’s Health and Safety Board. He has good advice for those just starting out in the field.

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions or stop work if something doesn’t feel right,” said Hearn. “Don’t cut corners. Use the safety tools provided by the company and take your time to do it right.”

And he always remembers the reason for doing his tasks the right, and safe, way.

“I work safely so I can come home every day.”

Entergy Mississippi recognizes National Safe Digging Month – Call 811 before you dig /news/entergy-mississippi-recognizes-national-safe-digging-month-call-811-before-you-dig Tue, 15 Apr 2025 03:48:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-mississippi-recognizes-national-safe-digging-month-call-811-before-you-dig/ Stay safe by marking underground utility lines in advance

JACKSON, Miss. – April is National Safe Digging Month and Entergy Mississippi is reminding you to call 811 before digging into your list of spring projects.

National Safe Digging Month serves as a reminder to all who excavate or dig to call 811 at least two full business days before digging to have the approximate location of their utility lines marked. This process helps prevent injuries, property damage and inconvenient utility outages.

The focus of National Safe Digging Month is on preventing serious consequences that could occur from digging without knowing what’s below the surface – not only now, but year-round. Regardless of what you plan to do, how deep you plan to dig or whether you’ve called before for a similar project, every job requires a call first.

The depth of underground utility lines varies, and there may be multiple utility lines in one common area. The risk of striking underground utility lines exists even when digging only a few inches.

Mississippi has its ownthat can help you stay safe while digging. Call center representatives can advise you on how to submit requests to learn what utilities may be buried beneath the ground, such as natural gas pipelines, electric power lines and other services.

After you make the call to 811, professional locators mark the approximate locations of underground lines at the requested digging site with flags, paint or both. Markings show the location of underground lines and help prevent undesired consequences such as injury, service disruptions or costly fines and repair costs.

If you suspect utility damage of any kind, leave the area immediately and call 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749) or call 911. A gas leak could be occurring if you smell the distinctive natural gas odor, hear a hissing or whistling sound near a gas appliance or see dead vegetation or bubbles near a gas line.

Brighten your holidays safely with lighting tips from Entergy Mississippi /news/brighten-your-holidays-safely-with-lighting-tips-from-entergy-mississippi Fri, 22 Nov 2024 08:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/brighten-your-holidays-safely-with-lighting-tips-from-entergy-mississippi/ Keep your home festive, safe and energy-efficient this holiday season

JACKSON, Miss. – It’s the most wonderful time of the year, filled with cozy gatherings, cherished traditions, and festive decorations. Whether you plan to set up a sparkling outdoor display or create a warm atmosphere indoors, Entergy Mississippi encourages customers to keep safety top of mind this holiday season.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 835 home structure fires per year caused by decorations, excluding trees. These incidents result in an annual average of 3 civilian fire deaths, 30 civilian fire injuries and $14 million in direct property damage. Nearly 20% of these decoration-related fires are caused by lamps or bulbs, while candles account for 11%.

To help keep the holiday season safe and joyful, Entergy Mississippi encourages customers to keep the following tips in mind when decorating for celebrations:

Indoor lighting:

  • Position your tree safely: Place it in a stand with water and keep it away from heat sources like fireplaces. Check the water daily to prevent your tree from drying out.
  • Inspect lights carefully: Discard any strands with frayed cords or cracked bulbs to avoid shock hazards.
  • Choose energy-efficient LED lights: Cool-burning LED lights help you save on energy costs and stay safe.
  • Avoid flammable decorations: Don’t use candles on or near the tree and choose non-flammable decor.
  • Turn off lights when unattended: Always switch off lights when leaving the room or going to bed.

Outdoor lighting:

  • Use outdoor-rated lights only: These lights are made to withstand weather conditions and keep your home safe.
  • Plug into GFCI outlets: Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter outlets provide added protection from electrical shocks.
  • Choose UL-listed lights: UL labels ensure that your lights are tested for outdoor safety.
  • Keep connections dry: Use rubber gaskets to keep water out of sockets and keep lights off the ground by hanging them on stakes.
  • Switch off outdoor lights when away: Save energy and enhance safety by turning off outdoor lighting when you’re not home or are going to sleep.

Entergy Mississippi recognizes Utility Scam Awareness Day /news/entergy-mississippi-recognizes-utility-scam-awareness-day Thu, 21 Nov 2024 08:48:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-mississippi-recognizes-utility-scam-awareness-day/ Entergy joins Utilities Against Scams to educate customers, expose scammers

JACKSON, Miss. – Entergy Mississippi is joining Utilities United Against Scams to recognize the ninth annual Utility Scam Awareness Day on Wednesday, November 20. Utility Scam Awareness Day is an advocacy and awareness campaign focused on educating customers and exposing scammer tactics.

For years, scammers have posed as utility workers and attempted to steal financial information or obtain immediate payment from customers by threatening service interruptions. This is known as a utility impostor scam.

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Anytime, anyone, anywhere.” Customers of all ages and demographics must stay vigilant against utility impostor scams. While advanced digital scam incidents have increased in recent years, in-person and telephone impostor scams are still frequently reported.

“Utility scams are increasingly sophisticated with fraudsters using phone, online and in-person tactics to target potential victims,” said Robbie Kemp, Entergy Mississippi vice president of customer service. “We urge customers to stay safe and remember that anyone can be susceptible to utility impostor scams.”

Entergy Mississippi is a member of UUAS, which continues to raise customer awareness of common scams and new scam tactics used by utility impostors. Through its work and with the help of customer reporting, UUAS has successfully helped to take more than 14,830 toll-free numbers used by scammers against utility customers out of operation.

“We encourage customers of all ages to stop and verify any unusual utility company requests before making a payment, regardless of whether the customer is contacted via phone, internet, or in person,” said UUAS Executive Director Monica Martinez. “While scammers often target elderly and vulnerable populations, customers in all age groups are reporting utility impostor scam incidents that take place online, on the phone, and in person.”

As a reminder, utilities will never ask for payments using a pre-paid debit card, gift card, or cryptocurrencies, and they will provide multiple notices before any service interruptions are implemented.

Customers who suspect that they have been victims of fraud should call 1-800-ENTERGY (1-800-368-3749). Be sure to have all details and any supporting documents available to discuss the suspicious activity on your utility account with an Entergy representative. You should also contact the proper authorities, such as the local police, the state attorney general’s office, or

Entergy Mississippi welcomes fall with safety reminders /news/entergy-mississippi-welcomes-fall-with-safety-reminders Wed, 16 Oct 2024 01:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-mississippi-welcomes-fall-with-safety-reminders/ These simple tips can help you avoid accidents and injuries

JACKSON, Miss. – The start of cooler temperatures outside makes fall-lovers eager for coats, sweaters and all the seasonal fun that begins in October. This time of year can also bring opportunities for customers to tackle home improvement or landscaping projects. As fun and gratifying as these activities can be, no one wants them to result in an accident or injury. Entergy Mississippi has some helpful tips for staying safe this fall.

Stay safe outdoors

The Halloween season brings children the fun of wearing costumes, enjoying candy and attending fall festivals and carnivals. The offers tips to help children celebrate safely. Prepare to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home safely by checking outdoor lights and making sure walkways and steps are well-lighted and free of any tripping hazards. Any extension cords should be specifically designated for outdoor use. Use rubber gaskets in light sockets or hang sockets downward to keep water out and remember to turn outside lights and decorations off when you are away from home or asleep. Help children with videos, activities and other resources.

Keep safety first with home projects

Fall is a great time to tidy up and prep your property for winter. When cleaning up fallen leaves and branches or trimming trees, always use caution and be aware of overhead lines. Position your ladder away from overhead wires, so trimmings will not fall onto power lines. If this happens, always assume downed wires are energized and call 1-800-ENTERGY for help.

If your fall spruce-up includes digging up flower beds, trees or shrubs, remember to call before you dig. Calling 811 before you dig will keep you safe and prevent disruption of utility services to your neighborhood.

When performing maintenance activities that require a ladder inside or out, be sure to wear proper footwear, position the ladder on a flat surface, and have someone nearby to spot you.

Daylight Saving Time ends November 3

When Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 3, fewer hours of daylight will make it harder to see children going to and from the school bus in the mornings and evenings. When driving, avoid distractions and watch for children in the neighborhood. The offers additional tips for ensuring children arrive to and from school safely.

When setting your clocks to fall back an hour, take the time to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. All homes should contain a carbon monoxidedetector to help identifythecolorless and odorless gas that can cause serious illness or death.

Stay safe and warm indoors

Candles can add a warm ambience to an autumn evening, but remember it is never safe to leave candles burning unattended. A small sputter or an errant flame can cause a fire in an instant.

They are large consumers of energy and a fire hazard and should be kept at least three feet away from draperies, rugs and furniture. Additionally, homeowners who use a gas or electric furnace should schedule an appointment for service by a certified technician to make sure it is safe for operation and for greatest efficiency.

A wood-burning stove or fireplace can add warmth and coziness to a room but should also be used with caution and proper preparation. Have your chimney cleaned by a professional before the first fire is lit. Fallen leaves, animal nests and other debris can cause the smoke to vent into your home rather than outside and cause a fire.

Remember to replace dirty air filters inside and remove debris from the unit outside to ensure your HVAC unit works efficiently through all seasons.

Be ready for inclement weather

lasts through the end of November, so it is important to not let your guard down even when the weather begins to cool. Prepare now for severe weather that may come your way by

During Hurricane Francine, our plants underscore the resiliency and strength of nuclear power /stormcenter/during-hurricane-francine-our-plants-underscore-resiliency-strength-nuclear-power-123696273 Fri, 13 Sep 2024 04:22:00 +0000 /during-hurricane-francine-our-plants-underscore-resiliency-strength-nuclear-power-123696273 Entergy’s Waterford 3 Nuclear Generating Station and River Bend Station in Louisiana and Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Mississippi operated at full power during Hurricane Francine, which once again shows the resiliency and strength of nuclear power.

I want to praise our nuclear professionals – and those across our company — who focused on in-depth preparation, strong teamwork and unparalleled collaboration, with the safety of our folks and our communities being at the core of every decision related to the storm. While we are still doing safety walkdowns, damage assessments and checking on our team members, our facilities in Louisiana and Mississippi performed exceptionally well.

While our plants stayed on the grid during the event, producing power for our customers, our people also shined. Their nuclear professionalism is impressive and appreciated, but not surprising. While power outages remain across southeast Louisiana and Mississippi, Entergy’s utility crews continue to assess damages and work to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

Entergy Mississippi Hurricane Francine update – 9/12/24, 1 p.m. /stormcenter/entergy-mississippi-hurricane-francine-update-9-12-2024-1-p-m Thu, 12 Sep 2024 23:55:00 +0000 /entergy-mississippi-hurricane-francine-update-9-12-2024-1-p-m Hurricane Francine, currently a tropical depression, continues moving northeastward from Louisiana through Mississippi. At 7 a.m., we had approximately 10,790 customer outages in the southern portion of our Entergy Mississippi territory. Outages are expected to fluctuate throughout the day as the storm moves through our service area and, therefore, are subject to change based upon the storm’s impact.

We have assembled a team of over 1,500 linemen, vegetation workers, damage assessors and support personnel to work with our Entergy teams in the restoration process. We stand ready as Francine continues to impact our service area and are responding by assessing damage and restoring service to our customers where it is safe to do so.

As restoration continues, keep in mind that if you don’t see us working near you, we may be working on another part of the electrical system that you can’t see but that must be repaired to get power to you. However, we also must wait until sustained winds are less than 30 mph to use our bucket trucks. Significant flooding and other accessibility challenges due to the storm may affect our ability to reach some areas of our territory and could delay providing estimated restoration times in those communities.

While we are assessing damage, we will continue restoring service where it is safe to do so. Our damage assessors are determining the exact cause and how long it is expected to take to correct the problem. We will begin to communicate more information on estimated restoration times as damage assessment progresses. For estimated restoration times, view our outage map at.

Please remember, Entergy restoration workers cannot restore power to a location with a damaged meter base, conduit or weather head (the metal pipe extending upward from the structure with electrical cables inside). These items must be repaired by a qualified electrician before our workers can restore power. about the electrical equipment that serves your home.

As with any weather event, please be mindful of the following safety tips:

  • Live wires can be deadly. Stay away from downed power lines. Call 1-800-9OUTAGE or 1-800-968-8243 to report downed or dangling power lines, damaged or downed poles or other damaged equipment.
  • Do not trim trees or remove debris on or near downed power lines. Only power company crews or their contractors should remove trees or limbs touching power lines. Again, stay away from downed power lines.
  • Keep away from the immediate areas where crews are working. There is always the danger of moving equipment and the possibility of construction materials, limbs or overhead wires falling to the ground.
  • If you plan on using a generator for temporary power, get a licensed electrician and disconnect from the utility electric system before hooking up to your main electric panel.
  • Do not run a generator in a confined space without adequate ventilation. Use them only outdoors, following all manufacturers’ safety guidelines.
  • Turn off any electrical appliances that can easily be turned to the off position until power is restored.

We want to keep you informed and in control. The best way to get information about outages is via Entergy’s View Outage page on our website. Additional resources for your convenience:

A message to our customers: What to expect with Hurricane Francine /stormcenter/message-our-customers-what-expect-with-hurricane-francine Wed, 11 Sep 2024 18:49:00 +0000 /message-our-customers-what-expect-with-hurricane-francine According to the National Hurricane Center’s, Hurricane Francine will make landfall near Vermillion Bay as a Category 1 hurricane this afternoon. We anticipate this storm could have widespread impacts throughout our entire Entergy Mississippi service area and are to see how it may affect both our systems and our customers. We are prepared and want you to have a plan, too.

No matter what happens over the next few days, we stand storm ready. Most important is the safety of those living and working in communities where Francine will strike. Then, restoring power is the top priority and first order of business. The restoration process is done in an orderly, deliberate manner. We assemble and organize the workforce needed to restore service safely and quickly to all customers. While we already have additional resources on the way and are strategically positioning restoration workers, it’s important to remember that hurricanes can cause severe damage inland and lead to extended power outages.

Thanks to the reliability work and grid improvements we’ve completed, along with our normal year-round storm preparedness efforts, we are ready to respond. As with any storm, we know there will be challenges. Saturated grounds and high winds are expected in parts of our service area hardest hit by last year’s drought, which , particularly off right-of-way trees that may uproot or fall and damage our electrical equipment.

Customers should prepare before severe weather threatens the area. Making sure you have a family emergency plan and a kit of basic supplies are smart ways to prepare. If you or your loved ones depend on life support or other that requires electricity – or refrigerated medications – it is especially important to be prepared for unplanned, extended outages. While crews are dedicated to restoring power, we advise customers to have a backup system and plan in place for relocating or providing a backup power source should power outages or other emergencies occur.
