Entergy helping customers stay cool and save money with energy efficiency tips and resources /news/entergy-helping-customers-stay-cool-and-save-money-with-energy-efficiency-tips-and-resources-2 Wed, 14 May 2025 03:28:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-helping-customers-stay-cool-and-save-money-with-energy-efficiency-tips-and-resources-2/ Easy tips to boost home energy efficiency and lower electric bill costs

As summer approaches and temperatures continue to rise, air conditioners will start running full blast and lead to an increase in electricity usage. However, staying cool and comfortable does not have to come at the cost of high energy bills. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can improve its energy efficiency and beat the heat while keeping costs down.

According to the U.S. ϳԹ Information Administration, home heating and cooling costs can make up more than 52% of an average customer’s electric bill. In some cases, poor insulation, air leaks and inefficient HVAC systems can lead to even greater energy costs each year. To keep your home cool without significantly lowering the thermostat and save money on your bill at the same time, try these low-to-no-costs tips.

Improving energy efficiency with low-to-no-cost tips

  • Change air filters. Air filters on some air conditioning units require monthly cleaning or replacing.
  • Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature. The smaller the difference between the inside and outside temperatures, the lower your energy usage and bill will be.
  • Buy a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can help manage costs, is controllable, and can help monitor usage.
  • Use fans to cool off. Ceiling fans, box fans and oscillating fans use very little electricity to circulate the air. Make sure ceiling fans are rotating in the right direction – counter-clockwise during summer – to push cooler air down into the room. Be sure to turn all fans off in unused rooms.
  • Close blinds, shades and curtains to keep the sun out and the cool air in. Also, close air conditioning vents in rooms that are not in use.
  • Seal cracks and holes around doors, windows and ductwork. Weather stripping and caulk will help keep the cold air in and the hot air out.
  • Use themyAdvisortool. The usage and cost tool can compare usage history by month, day and hour.

By following these simple steps, you can stay cool and comfortable all summer long while keeping your bills under control. We also offer free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment.

Mount Carmel Academy champions energy efficiency through Entergy New Orleans’ ϳԹ Smart Program /blog/mount-carmel-academy-champions-energy-efficiency-through-entergy-new-orleans-energy-smart-program Thu, 08 May 2025 21:34:33 +0000 /?p=13369 Entergy New Orleans supports organizations that prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency. Mount Carmel Academy, an all-girls Catholic high school in New Orleans, exemplifies this commitment through its successful participation in the ϳԹ Smart Large Commercial Automated Demand Response Program.

Located in the Lakeview neighborhood of New Orleans, Mount Carmel Academy serves 1,200 students across its 9-acre campus. While the school did not face critical energy cost issues, it saw an opportunity to reduce its energy use and lessen environmental impact. Its decision to enroll in the ϳԹ Smart program demonstrates leadership in responsible energy management.

ϳԹ Smart’s Large Commercial Automated Demand Response Program rewards organizations that reduce electricity use during peak demand periods. Mount Carmel Academy recognized this as a clear opportunity to support our electric grid and promote sustainability. Since joining the program in 2021, the school has earned $51,237 in incentives. More importantly, it has reduced its energy footprint while reinvesting those savings into its facilities and education programs.

“As committed environmental stewards, we recognize the importance of conserving our planet’s finite resources,” said Sister Camille Anne Campbell, president of Mount Carmel Academy. “This program not only aligns with our values but also presents a great opportunity to teach our students about sustainability and resource conservation,”

The academy’s participation also serves as a teaching tool as it integrates real-world examples of energy conservation into the educational experience. The initiative reflects a deep sense of environmental responsibility, not just from the school’s leadership, but from the student body as well.

Mount Carmel Academy continues to lead by example, showing how educational institutions can play a vital role in building a more sustainable New Orleans. Entergy New Orleans’ ϳԹ Smart program is proud to partner with a school that turns environmental values into measurable action.

Is your attic costing you money? /blog/is-your-attic-costing-you-money Mon, 05 May 2025 21:49:50 +0000 /?p=13417 Did you know 9 out of 10 homes in the U.S. are under-insulated?Your attic plays a major role in how much energy your home uses. According to the U.S. Department of ϳԹ, you can take control of your energy costs andby ensuring the proper attic insulation levels and sealing air leaks in your home.

In New Orleans’ heat and humidity, a well-insulated and sealed attic helps

  • Keep your cool air inside and reduce heat gain, especially during the hot summer, making your home easier (and cheaper) to cool.
  • Improve HVAC efficiency by reducing extra strain on your heating or cooling system and helping it last longer.
  • Provide better humidity control.
  • Minimize the pollen, dust, insects and/or other pests from entering your home.
  • Make your home more comfortable all year round.

Signs your home may need better attic insulation

  • Drafty rooms or rooms that feel too hot or cold, no matter what your thermostat says.
  • High energy bills, especially during peak summer and winter months.
  • Insulation at or below the level of the floor joists in your attic.

The best part is that you don’t have to figure it out on your own. It’s easy to get started with a free home energy assessment from ϳԹ Smart, which is available to Entergy New Orleans residential electric customers. This assessment will help you understand how your home uses energy and how you can start saving.

Don’t let energy (and money) slip through your roof..

This year, we constructed a permanent electric point of connection at the Fair Grounds to power the Blues Tent and other auxiliary services, decreasing the festival’s reliance on diesel generators and reducing event-related carbon emissions.

Electrification is a priority for Entergy New Orleans, and the installation is part of a broader effort to create permanent power sources that reduce localized emissions. The project is expected to deliver a net reduction of approximately 15 metric tons of CO₂ emissions. The electrification project also advances the festival’s environmental goals and builds upon the work of Shell, Jazz Fest’s official sustainability partner, who helped the Festival achieve.

“This project is about more than powering a stage—it’s about building a cleaner, healthier future for our city,” says Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “By investing in electrification and partnering with organizations that share our goals, we’re helping iconic events like Jazz Fest reduce their environmental impact while continuing to serve the communities that make New Orleans so special.”

Entergy New Orleans remains committed to expanding electrification infrastructure throughout the city and supporting projects that create lasting environmental, economic, and cultural value.

As part of that commitment, we recently conducted a walkdown in the Lower 9thward neighborhood to inspect utility poles and assess ongoing infrastructure needs.

Representatives from the ϳԹ Smart office joined us for the walkthrough, sharing energy efficiency tools and tips with residents to help improve home energy use and support a more sustainable community.

During the inspection, line workers identified issues affecting the reliability of electric service and performed minor repairs on-site. Some of the repairs completed included:

  • Fixing broken secondary arms
  • Raising a crossing wire resting on a communication line
  • Removing old utility poles

“Our walkdowns are a critical part of our commitment to reliability,” said Nyka Scott, vice president of customer service and economic development at Entergy New Orleans. “By proactively inspecting our infrastructure, we can address issues before they become larger problems and ensure the resilience and safety of our system, especially as we prepare for hurricane season.”

Entergy New Orleans will continue conduct walkdowns in every district to assess and improve our infrastructure. We appreciate ϳԹ Smart’s collaboration and look forward to continuing our shared efforts to keep New Orleans sustainable, powered, and prepared.
