The initiative focuses on strengthening the city’s electric grid to better withstand extreme weather and improve service reliability for residents and businesses.

The event spotlighted key projects beginning in District C, where work will be visible along the General DeGaulle corridor. These improvements include the installation of stronger utility poles designed to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour. The Accelerated Resilience Plan includes 63 infrastructure improvement projects across the city scheduled for completion between 2025 and 2026, with no impact to customer bills.

“Resilience is about storms, making sure that if the power goes out—hopefully it won’t—but if it does, that we can get it back on as quickly as possible,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “Our city needs to be more resilient, and we have solutions and that is exactly what we need to be investing in.”

Councilmember Helena Moreno echoed the need for grid improvements and highlighted the broader impact. “Strengthening our power grid is one of the most important things that we can do to improve quality of life in our city,” said Councilmember-at-Large Helena Moreno. “This effort also supports public health, our local businesses, and future job creation.”

“One of the first phases is installing brand new poles along General DeGaulle Highway to guard against power loss after a storm,” said Councilmember Freddie King III, who represents District C. “I’m proud to be a part of a city council that not only talks but acts and invests in these much-needed improvements.”

The Accelerated Resilience Plan reflects a shared commitment to improving service reliability and preparing the city for future storms. Entergy New Orleans will continue to work closely with city leaders to ensure long-term grid resilience.

Entergy New Orleans launches phase 1 of Resilience projects to harden the grid /stormcenter/entergy-new-orleans-launches-phase-1-of-resilience-projects-to-harden-the-grid Thu, 15 May 2025 15:16:13 +0000 /?p=13195 At Entergy New Orleans, our commitment to strengthening the electric grid and protecting our communities took a significant step forward as we officially launched the first phase of projects of our city-wide Resilience Plan. Together with the New Orleans City Council, Entergy leaders held a press conference to mark the beginning of the citywide initiative to fortify our infrastructure against extreme weather and ensure faster power restoration when outages occur.

This first phase includes 63 critical infrastructure improvement projects that will be completed over the next two years, with no impact to customer bills. This $100 million investment is designed to safeguard homes, businesses and essential services from the effects of extreme weather events, helping to make our city safer, stronger and more resilient.

Initial work is underway in District E, where crews and contractors have begun installing stronger, storm-hardened poles designed to withstand winds of up to 140 miles per hour. These upgrades will significantly improve reliability for residents in this area and will help reduce the time it takes to restore service after a severe storm.

“The impact of stronger and more severe weather makes investing in resilience critical to the future of our city,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “This first phase of grid hardening investments will be made throughout the city creating an environment for businesses to invest, grow and thrive here.”

These grid upgrades will be happening across all districts, with crews working throughout the spring and summer to strengthen nearly 3,100 structures. We’ll be hosting community-focused events in each district to share information about the projects and connect with residents.

“These storm hardening projects are critical to create a stronger power grid in New Orleans. Since Hurricane Ida, I’ve been leading the Council’s legislative items for these projects and while this took much work and out of the box solutions, we were able to ensure the majority of the costs were kept off ratepayers’ bills,” said Council Vice President Helena Moreno. “I appreciate Entergy New Orleans CEO Deanna Rodriguez for working directly with me to ensure the Utility was meeting the Council and the community’s needs with these projects and look forward to this level of continued partnership for future projects to come.”

“This is a step in the right direction,” said City Councilmember Oliver Thomas. “And why is it especially important for the upgrades to be here first? We know the direction of a lot of our storms or weather events come from that direction.”

We are proud to work alongside the New Orleans City Council and community partners to implement this plan. Our Resilience strategy is more than a construction initiative. It’s a promise to our customers that we are proactively working to protect the communities we serve.

Together, we’re building a stronger New Orleans—resilient in the face of storms and built to thrive for generations to come.

Entergy New Orleans powers sustainability /stormcenter/entergy-new-orleans-powers-sustainability Thu, 21 Nov 2024 22:47:00 +0000 /entergy-new-orleans-powers-sustainability Entergy New Orleans is committed to providing our customers with reliable, safe, and consistent service, even during challenging times. With the recent of our Accelerated Resilience Plan, we are taking a big step towards hardening the electric grid and upgrading the city’s infrastructure to ensure lights stay on longer and power can be restored faster.

Powering businesses through outages

Our commitment to resilience and reliability goes beyond words—it’s visible in our substantial investments, strategic partnerships, and in our continuous innovation. As storms evolve, so does our approach to ensuring businesses have access to reliable and safe power solutions. In 2022, Entergy Louisiana launched its Power Through program which offers tailored backup generation solutions that safeguard business operations.

By facilitating the installation, operation, and maintenance of natural gas-fired generators at customer facilities, we ensure businesses are well-prepared to seamlessly “power through” prolonged outages. With an affordable monthly fee added to the customer’s bill, the Power Through program offers customers enhanced reliability without financial strain.

In non-emergency situations, the generators can be used to counterbalance high levels of demand and allows Entergy to deliver power to our customers at a reduced rate. Through shared costs and customized solutions tailored to each business’s unique needs, we have made backup power generation both easy and affordable.

Powering our local community

In addition to providing business solutions, Entergy New Orleans has prioritized community preparedness through our Generator Readiness Project. This initiative prepares critical city-owned facilities for storm impact by staging temporary backup generators at key locations. Collaborating closely with city officials, we have equipped 16 sites, including New Orleans Recreation Department (NORD) sites, public libraries, and community facilities with manual transfer switches for rapid generator connection.

“This project is an important part of building a safe and resilient city,” said Deanna Rodriguez, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans. “We have worked with City leaders and community partners to ensure that we are taking every step to prepare New Orleans for major storms. The 16 generator-ready sites serve as an important resource providing shelter and giving residents a place to get essential supplies and to receive critical services during extended outages following a storm.”

With the advance staging of generators along with the preparation of natural gas for post-storm fuel supply, we can ensure the emergency sites remain operational during and after severe weather events. Through an investment of $900,000, collected through electric and gas rates, our Generator Readiness Project reinforces our support of the emergency response infrastructure and our commitment to providing safe and reliable electric services.

To sustain these initiatives, Entergy New Orleans maintains a power delivery system of approximately 16,100 circuit miles of transmission lines and over 106,000 miles of distribution lines. Our extensive and complex infrastructure is designed to meets the current needs of the community and the demands of the future.

We Power Life

Together, these programs highlight our dedication to supporting both the businesses and the community we serve. With a powerful combination of preparedness, customer-centric services, and an expansive power delivery network, Entergy New Orleans is shaping a more resilient future—one that prioritizes reliable, accessible power whenever and wherever it’s needed most.

Entergy prepares for 2023 hurricane season through Louisiana storm drill /news/entergy-prepares-for-2023-hurricane-season-through-louisiana-storm-drill Fri, 12 May 2023 09:47:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-prepares-for-2023-hurricane-season-through-louisiana-storm-drill/ Employees respond to mock storm scenarios and share knowledge, new technologies

BATON ROUGE, La. – Hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst: That is what approximately 400 Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans employees tackled head on over two days, from May 10-11, during the companies’ 2023 hurricane season storm drill.

The drill is one portion of the ongoing training that employees undergo throughout the year.

Employees kicked off day one by participating in various training and tabletop exercises that introduced them to new tools, technologies and processes. The drill is designed to help them restore power quickly and safely following severe weather and keep customers informed throughout those events. On day two, employees concluded their training by participating in a mock storm drill.

During the simulated hurricane scenarios, employees responded to two Category 5 hurricanes, with one making landfall in Southwest Louisiana and another in Southeast Louisiana. They tested their knowledge and skills related to all facets of storm restoration including operations, logistics, communications, and customer service and were evaluated on their planning and execution.

“We know that it’s not a matter of if but when Mother Nature decides to challenge us in Louisiana, and for that reason, we must be ready,” said Steven Benyard, vice president of reliability for Entergy in Louisiana. “The storm drill that we participate in every year is about continuous improvement; it’s about making sure that we’re readying ourselves and our workforce to be the best that we can be if we’re called to restore power following a major storm.”

The exercise involved storm roles from incident commander to crew leads and supervisors who will use new technologies to perform damage assessments quickly and safely, a critical part of storm restoration that helps local crews restore power in a real scenario through resource and logistics actions like deploying any necessary equipment, materials, and personnel.

Entergy’s drone experts were onsite with displays and equipment that is used by crews to assess damages to the electric system, especially in hard-to-access locations like the marsh or heavily wooded areas with saturated ground. Disaster Resource Group, a local vendor that partners with the company during storm response, was also onsite displaying components of a staging site like a bunk trailer that is typically used by utility workers during rest time and temporary tents that provide shelter for catering and laundry services.

Also, Entergy showcased its new mobile command center. The vehicle will function as a field command center, providing an immediate communications platform during major system incident response, or mutual assistance events.

“The storm drill we hold each year is a testament to the dedication of our workforce and their commitment to being there for the communities we serve,” said Phillip May, who has served as Entergy Louisiana’s president and CEO through many weather events, including hurricanes Laura and Ida. “We can’t predict the future or when and where the next major storm will land, but we can certainly ready ourselves to do what we’ve always done — be there for our customers, even in the most challenging times.”

“We live in an area prone to some of the most severe weather in the country, and are facing stronger and more frequent storms,” said Deanna Rodriguez, Entergy New Orleans president and CEO. “While we continue to invest in hardening the grid, today’s storm drill is an important exercise for our teams to prepare for anything Mother Nature may bring.”

Customers encouraged to be prepared as well

Although Entergy is always upgrading the electric system and adding in resilience, the company is encouraging customers to be prepared for hurricane season as well because no two storms are alike and each present different challenges and can inflict different levels of damage.

Entergy provides information to customers to help them prepare for hurricane season and communicates with them after a severe weather event. The company’s Storm Center includes checklists and other information that customers can use to create a pre-storm kit and prepare for hurricane season. The website includes individual pages on , and . Customers are also encouraged to follow Entergy New Orleans and Entergy Louisiana on Facebook and Twitter at @EntergyNOLA and @EntergyLA.

Preparing beyond the 2023 hurricane season

Entergy recognizes that the intensity and frequency of major storms are increasing and believes we must take an accelerated approach to storm hardening and building resilience into the electric system. To provide reliable power well into the future and help the communities we serve recover more quickly following severe weather events, the company filed Entergy Future Ready Resilience Plans with its regulators, the New Orleans City Council and the Louisiana Public Service Commission.
