Recent efforts in Mid-City, Gentilly, and New Orleans East reflect that commitment with crews completing major upgrades to our transmission and distribution lines.

To accomplish this, Entergy New Orleans deployed a highly specialized bare-hand crew to complete the work—an elite team of linemen trained to safely repair high-voltage, energized transmission lines. Keeping the lines energized during upgrades prevents power outages and ensures substations continue operating under normal, stable conditions.

The team recently completed work on a major transmission line in New Orleans, replacing older insulators on 26 towers with stronger, more modern equipment. Working in coordination with distribution and vegetation management teams, they also replaced aging wooden cross arms and cleared overgrown vegetation. This collaborative approach enhances both transmission and distribution reliability across the New Orleans service area.

Additional work is underway in New Orleans East, where the bare-hand crew is replacing insulators on several water-crossing circuits. The crew is scheduled to complete critical upgrades on the Michoud–Front transmission line crossing over Lake Pontchartrain. This line provides a vital interconnection between Entergy and Cleco and serves as an emergency power source for the New Orleans grid. These enhancements will significantly strengthen the electrical grid and improve regional reliability.

“These types of upgrades help prevent potential issues and keep the power flowing safely,” said Kenyon Stipe, transmission line supervisor at Entergy New Orleans. “Upgrading our equipment reduces the chance of outages and helps ensure reliable service for our customers.”

This work would not be possible without the expertise and collaboration of key personnel and partners. North Houston Pole Line provided experienced contract support. Linh Tran, Grid Engineer; Josh Rollins, Transmission OC; Kenyon Stipe Sr., Transmission Line Supervisor; and Frank Morse, Senior Manager of Transmission Lines, all played vital roles in planning and execution. The Tulane Network also contributed valuable support to the project’s success.

By completing this work with energized lines and minimizing disruption, Entergy New Orleans continues to meet its promise of delivering safe, reliable power to its customers.

We’re taking steps to advance reliability across our region /blog/we-re-taking-steps-advance-reliability-across-our-region Tue, 16 Jul 2024 21:23:00 +0000 /we-re-taking-steps-advance-reliability-across-our-region In the ever-evolving energy sector, the latest advancements in technology are critical for enhancing service reliability for customers. Entergy is leading the charge by implementing a groundbreaking artificial intelligence procedure to significantly reduce the frequency and duration of power outages associated with maintenance outages. This innovative technology uses smart meter infrastructure to predict power outages and ensure more reliable power delivery to homes and businesses.

Entergy has implemented this new technology to increase the reliability of our service. This technological advancement emphasizes our commitment to customer-centricity by ensuring we deliver efficient, high-quality services to our customers.

“AI is becoming instrumental in serving our customers,” said Charles Long, Entergy’s senior vice president for power delivery. “This is just the beginning in using the most promising technology to increase efficiency and minimize disruptions.”

Our advanced metering infrastructure is more than just a network of smart meters; it’s a data storage house. The smart meters generate vast amounts of performance data and provide real-time insights into the grid’s performance. By applying AI to this data, Entergy can predict when distribution transformers are likely to fail. This predictive capability is transformative because it enables proactive maintenance that prevents unplanned outages.

Since deploying the AI application to the reliability management teams, Entergy has seen a significant improvement in the reliability of its service. In just one year, this initiative has prevented 536 unplanned outages and avoided over 48,000 outage minutes. These results underscore the power of combining AI with AMI data to enhance grid reliability.

“Combining vast amounts of data from our AMI meters with AI tools allows us to prevent problems before they occur,” said Andy Quick, Entergy’s vice president and chief AI officer. “Although we’re in the early stages of our AI journey, the benefits of the application of AI are already paying off. We’ll continue to integrate AI in our business operations and expect it to benefit both our customers and the company.”

The integration of AI and AMI offers several additional benefits:

  • Operational efficiency – AI algorithms automate the detection of irregularities, which leads to more efficient operations and reduced need for manual intervention.
  • Load forecasting – Advanced analytics help forecast and plan for peak demand periods.
  • Regulatory compliance – This provides timely and more efficient reporting.
  • Billing accuracy – The company is providing enhanced data that improves billing accuracy and reduces billing errors.

Improving for our customers is at the heart of this initiative. This work will be planned to minimize disruption to anyone impacted by the maintenance outage, and Entergy will notify customers prior to the time maintenance work is to be conducted.

Long added, “By utilizing this new AI technology, Entergy is setting a new standard for managing reliability. The success of this new program not only highlights the value of innovative technology in the energy sector, but it also promises increased reliability of electric services and enhanced customer satisfaction.”

Entergy completes transmission line segment over Mississippi River /news/entergy-completes-transmission-line-segment-over-mississippi-river Thu, 25 Aug 2022 01:49:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-completes-transmission-line-segment-over-mississippi-river/ New Avondale to Harahan crossing built to withstand winds of up to 175 mph

JEFFERSON, La. – As part of its ongoing commitment to increase reliability of and build resilience into the electric system, Entergy Louisiana recently completed the Mississippi River transmission crossing from Avondale to Harahan.

The rebuilt 230kV power line segment, which includes a large tower on both sides of the river, was upgraded to withstand winds of up to 175 mph. Each tower stands around 475 feet and weighs approximately 658,000 pounds.

“The completion of the Avondale to Harahan Mississippi River crossing is another example of how we’re continuing to upgrade the electric system through strategies aimed at increasing service reliability and shortening the amount of time it takes to restore power following major storms,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO.

The project began in September 2021 when engineers and others were engaged to develop a plan to rebuild and upgrade the river crossing. After tower and foundation designs were finalized, crews began pile driving work and demolished a tower on the Harahan side of the river. In March, crews began installing the concrete pile cap foundations on the Avondale side and pile driving on the Harahan side. Then crews completed foundation work and started constructing the towers. Lastly, wires were strung across the river and the power line was put into service on Aug. 17.

The Avondale to Harahan transmission line is one of eight transmission lines serving the metro New Orleans area.

JACKSON, Miss. – ϳԹ’s major upgrade to transmission service in New Orleans has been recognized by Platts Global ϳԹ Awards as one of the top ten finalists for Construction Project of the Year.

The energy industry’s most notable awards program highlights corporate and individual innovation, leadership and superior performance. Entergy’s $30 million initiative involved construction of two 230,000-volt lines that spanned the Mississippi River, crossed an interstate three times and traversed historical, heavily populated residential streets and popular tourist areas.

Entergy accomplished the challenging undertaking by engaging specialized crews with the experience and technology to safely work on energized lines. This allowed workers to complete the upgrade while minimizing the impact to customers’ electrical service. The upgrade was completed in March 2016.

Entergy employees also eased the inconveniences caused by the construction for residents through a neighborhood customer service support plan where company representatives were in constant communication with customers and helped facilitate their daily lives. Helping children get to school, making sure residents kept their doctor appointments and seeing that groceries made their way to customers’ kitchens were just a few of the transportation and delivery services provided.

“Through our employees’ innovation and commitment to excellence, major improvements were completed with a focus on the customer and using unique construction techniques to deliver on time, under budget and most importantly, without injury,” said Jim Schott, Entergy’s vice president of transmission. “The upgrade positions New Orleans for continued economic growth and development by helping ensure the availability of affordable power well into the future.”

Fueling economic growth in its communities is a key component to Entergy’s strategic imperative to aggressively grow its utility business. Employees are focused on operating with excellence, actively engaging with stakeholders, exploring new technologies and modernizing infrastructure, including Entergy’s transmission system. In 2015, Entergy invested more than $750 million in transmission infrastructure projects.

“We are honored to be recognized for our work by this prestigious program,” said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, “but the real winners are our customers. Improving our transmission infrastructure means increased resiliency and improved reliability to power life and support the growing needs of our customers.”

Work scheduled Dec. 12 and 13 crosses Pontchartrain Expressway

NEW ORLEANS — Crews continue working on the second phase of Entergy New Orleans’ technological upgrade to the electric power transmission system — Ninemile generation-Derbigny substation — and will undertake the second in a series of interstate crossings this week. Weather permitting, work crossing Interstate 10 will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12 and Sunday, Dec. 13 near Kentwood Bottling Company crossing the Pontchartrain Expressway/I-10. Entergy New Orleans will conduct its remaining interstate crossing work in January 2016, with the entire second phase being completed by March 2016.

“Due to our extensive coordination with the City of New Orleans and state agencies, the first interstate crossing that took place before Thanksgiving was completed safely and with only minor inconveniences to the public,” said Charles Rice, president and CEO of Entergy New Orleans, Inc. “Our crews executed the plan flawlessly and kept their focus on safety at all times. We’ve continued this extensive coordination for the second interstate crossing and intend to finish it with the same result.”

Part of that coordination includes working with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, the Louisiana State Police and the New Orleans Police Department to determine non-peak times for short, intermittent closures of I-10 to reduce inconveniences and, most importantly, ensure safety for all.

“This weekend’s I-10 work will take place at South Galvez Street located near the Kentwood Bottling Company,” said Toni Green-Brown, public affairs manager for Entergy New Orleans. “During the short, intermittent closures, police will stop traffic on Pontchartrain Expressway/I-10 in both directions. As part of our commitment to keep the public informed, Louisiana DOTD digital message signs are in place to alert drivers about the closures in advance, and traffic controls will be placed at the designated on-ramps.”

Multiple project crews will be working simultaneously and will use very large equipment including 24-foot-wide bucket trucks and 120-foot cranes at each of the existing steel transmission poles crossing the designated portion of I-10. Several stages of work will occur during each segment, and each stage of work will have different impacts. The initial stage is called a “pre-pull.” The next stage is called the “pull.” After the “pull” is complete, Entergy bucket trucks and cranes will return to the steel pole locations to complete the “post-pull” work.

The Ninemile generation-Derbigny substation phase impacts the Carrollton-Hollygrove area, including Cambronne Street, through portions of the Xavier University footprint. The Ninemile generation-Napoleon substation phase, which was completed ahead of schedule in September, affected the Audubon Park, upper Magazine Street and Annunciation Street areas.

This transmission project represents a $30 million capital investment in the electric transmission infrastructure as Entergy prepares to deactivate the aging Michoud generating facility, which originally was placed into service during the 1960s. These upgrades are required by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator prior to the planned 2016 Michoud deactivation, and will enhance reliability, increase transmission capacity and help ensure the availability of affordable power now and into the future.

The final I-10 crossing work will take place along Lafayette Street in January 2016. Entergy New Orleans will be sure to notify everyone prior to the chosen dates.

On Oct. 5, multiple crews will work simultaneously on the designated streets and will use very large equipment including 24-foot-wide bucket trucks and 120-foot cranes at each of the existing steel transmission poles. Several stages of work will occur during each of the 20 project segments, and each stage of work will have different impacts. The initial stage, called a “pre-pull,” may block traffic for up to half a day at each of the existing steel transmission poles. In the next stage, called the “pull,” all automobile, bicycle and pedestrian traffic along the entire segment will experience temporary delays as the wire is pulled from one end to the other. Delays may last from 15 minutes up to two hours. No parking will be allowed along the work segments during this stage. However, safe crossings will be set up at strategic locations along the route to allow traffic to navigate safely through the work zone while the “pull” is taking place. After the “pull” is complete, Entergy bucket trucks and cranes will return to the steel pole locations to complete the “post-pull” work and may block traffic for up to half a day.
