Entergy Mississippi helping customers stay cool and save money with energy efficiency tips /news/entergy-mississippi-helping-customers-stay-cool-and-save-money-with-energy-efficiency-tips Thu, 22 May 2025 20:25:51 +0000 /?p=18001 JACKSON, Miss. – As summer approaches and temperatures continue to rise, air conditioners will start running full blast and lead to an increase in electricity usage. However, staying cool and comfortable does not have to come at the cost of high energy bills. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can improve its energy efficiency and beat the heat while keeping costs down.

According to the U.S. ϳԹ Information Administration, home heating and cooling costs can make up more than 52% of an average customer’s electric bill. In some cases, poor insulation, air leaks and inefficient HVAC systems can lead to even greater energy costs each year. To keep your home cool without significantly lowering the thermostat and save money on your bill at the same time, try these low-to-no-costs tips.

Improving energy efficiency with low-to-no-cost tips

  • Change air filters. Air filters on some air conditioning units require monthly cleaning or replacing.
  • Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature. The smaller the difference between the inside and outside temperatures, the lower your energy usage and bill will be.
  • Buy a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat can help manage costs, is controllable, and can help monitor usage.
  • Use fans to cool off. Ceiling fans, box fans and oscillating fans use very little electricity to circulate the air. Make sure ceiling fans are rotating in the right direction – counter-clockwise during summer – to push cooler air down into the room. Be sure to turn all fans off in unused rooms.
  • Close blinds, shades and curtains to keep the sun out and the cool air in. Also, close air conditioning vents in rooms that are not in use.
  • Seal cracks and holes around doors, windows and ductwork. Weather stripping and caulk will help keep the cold air in and the hot air out.
  • Use the myAdvisor tool. The usage and cost tool can compare usage history by month, day and hour.

By following these simple steps, you can stay cool and comfortable all summer long while keeping your bills under control. We also offer free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment.

Exploring resources through Bill Toolkit

To make sure customers have quick access to energy efficiency, bill management and financial assistance resources, Entergy created an online platform called. Entergy prepares for the 2025 hurricane season with storm drill /blog/entergy-prepares-for-the-2025-hurricane-season-with-storm-drill Wed, 21 May 2025 21:57:05 +0000 /?p=18094 Preparing for stormy weather is what we do at Entergy. As part of our extensive year-round focus on incident preparation, Entergy employees recently participated in an annual tropical storm exercise.

During the exercise, a mock Category 4 storm made a simulated landfall near the Bolivar Peninsula located in Southeast Texas. Employees across our four-state service area tested and role-played how they would respond, including their restoration efforts, operations, logistics, communications and customer service responses.

Representatives from Tulane University’s Emergency and Security Studies program observed Entergy employees’ and shared insights on how the organization trains for its response efforts.

“Oftentimes in an exercise folks will rely heavily on assumptions about what support or capabilities they can expect. But real-world events are filled with challenges, obstacles, and unexpected factors that rise, which is why we were impressed to see Entergy’s approach to their tropical storm exercise,” said Dr. Rebecca Rouse, professor of practice and associate program director emergency and security studies at Tulane. “The various departments tested their plans for weakness versus rigging the scenario to ensure success. They started with vulnerabilities and lessons learned from the past and worked thoroughly through these. This kind of execution effectively reveals gaps in planning so the operators can avoid using precious resources to wrangle these later when the actual storms roll in- a great way to prepare for any emergency.”

The storm exercise gave employees a chance to sharpen their storm-response skills and prepare for this year’s hurricane season thata total of 17 named storms, nine being hurricanes – four of which are predicted to be major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. This forecast follows a stormy spring season that brought devastating tornadoes to communities we serve in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

“Hurricanes Beryl and Francine caused widespread damage to our Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas service areas. We must remain ready for a variety of threats, which is why are continuing to refine how we train and prepare for storm season.” said Dakin DuBroc, vice president, incident response. “Our team takes training seriously and I am proud of their commitment to being prepared for anything.”

Through a series of community events in the Cleveland and Huntsville areas, the company’s energy efficiency team partnered with local contractors to offer A/C tune-ups at no cost to customers.

This effort is part of Entergy Texas’, which provides free HVAC services valued at more than $200 per home. Qualified technicians clean and maximize the output of A/C systems, improving performance and helping qualifying customers lower their energy usage without sacrificing comfort.

“We know the Texas summer heat can be relentless, and so can high energy bills if systems aren’t running efficiently,” said Mark Delavan, energy efficiency program manager for Entergy Texas. “These tune-ups can make a big difference in the homes and wallets of our customers. We’re proud to offer these services at no cost, so Texas families can stay cool and worry less throughout the summer months.”

In addition to A/C tune-ups, customers in the Huntsville area also received free energy efficiency products and home weatherization upgrades, including ceiling insulation and sealing around ducts, doors and windows—improvements designed to keep cool air in and hot air out. For some Huntsville residents, the upgrades brought more than just cooler air—it brought peace of mind.

“It’s wonderful to have a team come to your own home, show us that you care and ensure my home will be safe and efficient,” said Precious Hall Scott, an Entergy Texas customer.

Scott, a Huntsville resident, took advantage of the opportunity to service both her home and her mother’s home, who lives next door.

“It’s great to get extra help to be more efficient and lower the cost on future bills,” added Scott. “The whole process was very easy. Everyone was very kind, and they were on time. We truly appreciate everything the team has done today.”

Is your attic costing you money? /blog/is-your-attic-costing-you-money Mon, 05 May 2025 21:49:50 +0000 /?p=13417 Did you know 9 out of 10 homes in the U.S. are under-insulated?Your attic plays a major role in how much energy your home uses. According to the U.S. Department of ϳԹ, you can take control of your energy costs andby ensuring the proper attic insulation levels and sealing air leaks in your home.

In New Orleans’ heat and humidity, a well-insulated and sealed attic helps

  • Keep your cool air inside and reduce heat gain, especially during the hot summer, making your home easier (and cheaper) to cool.
  • Improve HVAC efficiency by reducing extra strain on your heating or cooling system and helping it last longer.
  • Provide better humidity control.
  • Minimize the pollen, dust, insects and/or other pests from entering your home.
  • Make your home more comfortable all year round.

Signs your home may need better attic insulation

  • Drafty rooms or rooms that feel too hot or cold, no matter what your thermostat says.
  • High energy bills, especially during peak summer and winter months.
  • Insulation at or below the level of the floor joists in your attic.

The best part is that you don’t have to figure it out on your own. It’s easy to get started with a free home energy assessment from ϳԹ Smart, which is available to Entergy New Orleans residential electric customers. This assessment will help you understand how your home uses energy and how you can start saving.

A powerful serve /blog/a-powerful-serve Thu, 19 Dec 2024 21:19:19 +0000 /?p=13334 We have all experienced what it means for someone to come alongside us in our time of need. To know that, in this season of good tidings the times are tough for some—some who need a tangible sign that someone cares.

That sign can look like many things—a kind word, a helping hand or an offer to share the burden of providing basic necessities.

That’s the heart of Entergy’s The Power to Care program, started almost 30 years ago as a means for employees to help support our neighbors in need—older adults or individuals with disabilities who cannot afford their utility bills.

“For an employee to say, ‘We want to raise money, and we want to do it for The Power to Care,’ it shows they care about our customers,” said Elizabeth Brister, Entergy director of corporate social responsibility “Not only does it keep customers’ lights on, but it allows them to use their money to buy groceries or to go buy medicine, because we’re helping to pay their utility bill.”

“The money we raise is an important safety net and even a lifeline for some of our most vulnerable customers.”

And while nuclear employees have always dug deep to contribute to the cause, this year’s undertaking was augmented by the efforts of a core team of employees who rallied to raise more dollars than ever before.

“I wanted to find a way this year to do something good for our community, because it directly supports our goal to make our customers more successful,” said Mike Spustack, Entergy Nuclear director of fleet projects and organizer of the event. “And then in the same vein, I wanted to try to find a way to engage people in the nuclear headquarters building, to motivate them to do something together.”

And they did it all through pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports in America.

“We’ve been doing all types of fundraisers in the operating companies for years,” said Brister.“Many raise six figures, but it took decades for them to reach that level. Mike raised over $53,000 in his pickleball tournament on the first try. If it was a baseball tournament, I would say that’s a home run.”

In fact, the tournament amounted to a grand slam once Entergy matched the funds, doubling the impact of Spustack’s efforts. Each year, The Power to Care matches all employee donations made by payroll deductions 1:1 with no cap on the amount, and matches other funds raised by customers up to $500,000.

“What Mike did is amazing,” Brister continued, “but it also says a lot about the other nuclear employees, because they’re the ones who supported his cause.”

That grassroots effort, said Spustack, was led by “dozens of unnamed individuals who were really the ones to make this event successful.”

“Of all the things we support, this cause goes straight to the heart of what we do as a company,” he said. “It helps keep our most vulnerable customers connected to life-giving power.”
