Entergy Arkansas, partners to provide free tax return prep for qualified customers at Super Tax Day /news/entergy-arkansas-partners-to-provide-free-tax-return-prep-for-qualified-customers-at-super-tax-day Thu, 30 Jan 2025 07:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-partners-to-provide-free-tax-return-prep-for-qualified-customers-at-super-tax-day/ Largest event set for Feb. 8 at Our House in Little Rock

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – IRS-certified volunteers with Entergy Arkansas and several community partners will offer free tax preparation through the  program at Super Tax Day events across the state to help customers in need maximize their tax refund.

Qualified taxpayers include those with a 2024 income of less than $67,000, those with disabilities, and limited-English speaking households. Customers will have access to essential information about qualifying tax credits and deductions, including the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, a key program that helps lift many Americans out of poverty.

For nearly 20 years, Entergy has provided free tax preparation customers at VITA sites throughout its four-state service region, including several locations across Arkansas. Last year, VITA volunteers helped file 9,313 tax returns in the state, which resulted in $4.4 million in EITC dollars and $11.5 million total in tax refunds to Arkansans.

“Our Super Tax Day events are an important part of our commitment to helping meet our customers’ needs in ways that improve their everyday lives,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “We want to help customers navigate the tax preparation and return process more easily and receive the most money for which they’re eligible.

The largest Super Tax Day event for Arkansas is open to the public and will be held Saturday, Feb. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in partnership with Arkansas Asset Builders at Our House, 302 E. Roosevelt Rd., Little Rock 72206. Appointments are recommended and can be scheduled online at , but walk-ins are also welcome.

For the most accurate assistance and timely filing, customers should bring their government-issued photo identification; Social Security card or ITIN for self, spouse and all dependents; all wage and earnings statements, such as Form W-2 or 1099; Form 1095-A Health Insurance statements; IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN); and banking information for direct deposit. For a complete checklist, visit .

“We are especially excited to partner with Arkansas Asset Builders and Our House in Little Rock as tax season begins,” Hinkle said. “These two organizations are dedicated to empowering individuals and families in need in becoming more independent, financially stable and successful in the workforce, school and our communities.”

In addition to tax preparation at Super Tax Day, customers will also receive information on how to enroll their children ages 16 and younger in Kids to College, a free child savings account powered by Entergy. Entergy will contribute $50 and match any savings in the account up to $300 this calendar year for each child.

Additional service providers will be also on hand to help customers as well, including Arkansas Minority Health Commission, Central Arkansas Development Council, Entergy Solutions, IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service, Legal Aid of Arkansas, Southern Bancorp and UA-Little Rock Bowen School of Law Low Income Tax Clinic.

“We recommend individuals schedule appointments online,” said Joyia Yorgey, Arkansas Asset Builders executive director, “but we encourage anyone who might qualify to come by for assistance, as well as lots of information and opportunities to find other resources. We’ll also have free chips, hot dogs and drinks for attendees.”

VITA services are not only free but are also a reliable and trusted source for preparing tax returns. All volunteers who prepare returns must pass tax law training that meets or exceeds IRS standards. This training includes maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of all taxpayer information. In addition to requiring volunteers to certify their knowledge of the tax laws, the IRS requires a quality review check for every return prepared at a VITA site prior to filing.

This year’s Super Tax Day events will take place at locations throughout Arkansas throughout tax season, making it convenient for customers to take advantage of this free and valuable service. However, customers unable to attend an event in their area can still receive free, in-person tax preparation services by scheduling an appointment at one of several Entergy-sponsored VITA sites through April 15 or using the no-cost, online counseling services at entergy.com/freetaxhelp.

Entergy Arkansas highlights community engagement for National Volunteer Month /blog/entergy-arkansas-highlights-community-engagement-for-national-volunteer-month Thu, 25 Apr 2024 18:50:00 +0000 /entergy-arkansas-highlights-community-engagement-for-national-volunteer-month At Entergy Arkansas, our employees are not only dedicated to providing reliable power to our customers but also to personally giving back to the communities in which we live and work. April is National Volunteer Month, and the company is proud of the year-round commitment our employees make to volunteering and making a difference in communities throughout our service territory.

Our employees carry out that task every day, engaging in our communities and providing thousands of volunteer hours to make them better. In 2023, employees in Arkansas dedicated more than 29,000 hours of volunteer service valued at over $922,000.

“As a company, our mission is to continually improve the communities we serve and create sustainable value and quality of life,” said Brandi Hinkle with Entergy Arkansas Corporate Social Responsibility. “Employees do this through philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy.”

Our philanthropic focus

Across the company, those efforts are focused primarily on the broad pillars of poverty solutions, education and workforce development, and environmental programs. Additionally, the areas of healthy families, arts and culture, and community enrichment are part of the overall strategy to contribute to a society that is healthy, educated, environmentally safe and productive.

“Each employee is encouraged to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours per year – on the clock – but also to go above and beyond that to impact our friends and neighbors in a positive way,” Hinkle said. “We reward those employees with a grant of $250 to the nonprofit of their choice for every 20 hours of volunteer service, up to $750 per year.

“By using our dollars and time to alleviate food insecurity, provide equitable education and workforce opportunities, and help sustain healthy families, we can help our customers and their families move beyond survival into growth and greater well-being,” Hinkle said.

Grants are funded from shareholder profit, not customer dollars, and company shareholders contributed nearly $2 million to nonprofit partners in Arkansas that align with our areas of focus. More than 200 grants were awarded, many of which also included volunteer opportunities for employees. Programs that were funded ranged from emergency response and relief services to scholarships and youth services, food pantries and community safety events.

The largest grants were given to six nonprofits to celebrate the company’s 110th anniversary. Each of the following organizations received a $110,000 grant as part of the Entergy Arkansas Bright Futures Campaign:

  • Arkansas Community Foundation
  • Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance
  • Arkansas STEM Coalition
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • The Nature Conservancy
  • Women’s Foundation of Arkansas

Along with receiving the grant, each of these organizations will provide Entergy Arkansas employees with opportunities to volunteer and help with designated projects, such as stuffing backpacks with food for children in need or planting trees and litter cleanup.

Doing more in ‘24

So far in 2024, Entergy Arkansas employees aim to exceed last year’s service hours and have already participated in several important volunteer initiatives to help and serve our customers. A few of the largest endeavors this year include:

Super Tax Day

IRS-certified volunteers with Entergy Arkansas and other nonprofit partners provided free tax return preparation for qualified customers as part of the federal Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program and other services at Super Tax Day events throughout tax season. During the Super Tax Day events, customers receive counseling regarding tax credits and deductions they may be eligible for, including the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, one of the nation’s most effective means of lifting Americans out of poverty. Tax preparation volunteers help customers determine if they are eligible for this and other tax credits in an effort to maximize their tax refunds.

Eclipse glasses

In preparation for the April 8 total solar eclipse, Entergy Arkansas partnered with the Arkansas STEM Coalition to purchase and distribute free eclipse glasses to all public schools in our service territory. A grant from Entergy Arkansas helped fund the purchase of more than 625,000 pairs of eclipse glasses, enough for all preK-12 students, teachers and staff. Volunteers from the STEM Coalition, Entergy Arkansas and other groups worked for more than six weeks to sort and deliver the glasses.

Girls of Promise STEAM conference

Entergy Arkansas participated in the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas Girls of Promise “Full STEAM Ahead” conference, which introduced 8th grade girls across the state to potential STEAM careers. Nearly 150 girls from 20 counties were able to meet women leaders in the fields of engineering, finance and more. The goal is to increase the number of girls in higher-level STEAM courses and careers to put them on the path to achieving economic security as adults.

We have planned philanthropy events each month throughout the year with our existing partners and are continually looking for new partners and ways to impact the communities we serve. Entergy is committed to creating a diverse, inclusive and engaged culture that inspires all individuals to work together to operate a world-class energy business for our customers, employees, communities and owners now and into the future. We’re proud to say that every employee volunteer hour makes a difference in achieving our goals.

Free tax prep services secures nearly $43M in tax refunds for Entergy customers in 2023 /blog/entergys-2023-sponsorship-free-tax-prep-empowers-customers-with-over-40-million-in-tax-refunds Tue, 09 Apr 2024 19:00:00 +0000 /entergys-2023-sponsorship-free-tax-prep-empowers-customers-with-over-40-million-in-tax-refunds

“Entergy’s assistance with my taxes was truly a blessing. The entire process, from arriving at the event to the completion, was incredibly smooth. Thanks to their support, I received a substantial tax refund that I couldn’t have managed on my own, and it didn’t cost me a penny.” –Entergy customer

An annual sponsorship of free tax preparation services has been a cornerstone of Entergy’s corporate social responsibility initiatives to help customers facing financial challenges and uplift our communities out of poverty. Each year, we sponsor Super Tax Day events and promote Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites, or VITA, offering free tax filing services and customer assistance across our service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Last year, our IRS-certified employees contributed more than 2,800 volunteer hours to help vulnerable customers prepare and file tax returns. This dedicated effort led to an outstanding outcome where more than 37,000 Entergy customers benefited from a total of $42.7 million in federal tax refunds facilitated by Entergy-sponsored VITA sites. The positive economic ripple effect of these tax events was significant, resulting in a $64 million economic applied to the total refunds, showcasing the significant impact of our initiatives on the community.

During these events, our customers accessed valuable resources and information on tax credits and deductions they may be eligible for, including the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, or EITC. The EITC program is a crucial tool in lifting low-income individuals and their families above the poverty line. Entergy’s tax preparation volunteers helped our customers determine if they are eligible for this and other tax credits, maximizing their tax refunds.

“Each year, our employee volunteers collaborate with the IRS, United Way affiliates and nonprofits to provide free tax preparation services for our low-income customers living in our service area,” said Patty Riddlebarger, Entergy’s vice president of corporate social responsibility. “Since this service began, we have helped more than 185,000 families access $330 million in EITC refunds. This impactful initiative highlights the importance of supporting and uplifting our customers and communities.”

Since 2011, Entergy has been organizing these free Super Tax Day events to help qualifying customers claim the EITC. Entergy employees have played an important role in the success of Super Tax Day, dedicating thousands of volunteer hours to assist customers in filing taxes and claiming the EITC. By offering services like financial coaching, budget workshops and legal services, Entergy continues empowering our customers to achieve their financial goals and build generational wealth.

The 2024 tax season is still underway, with events and resources to help our customers in need break the cycle of poverty.

Customers can still receive free, in-person tax preparation services by scheduling an appointment at one of the Entergy-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites through April 15.
