This year, the company partnered with 38 agencies to donate 2,000 boxed fans to 11 cities across Southeast Texas, bringing the total number of fans donated to more than 31,000 since the program started in 2000. For families without access to reliable air conditioning, box fans can be a cost-effective way to reduce indoor heat stress, particularly for seniors, children and those with medical conditions.

“This program started as a simple gesture to help families during the summer, and 25 years later, it’s become a vital part of how we serve our communities,” said Stuart Barrett, vice president of customer service for Entergy Texas. “With extreme heat events becoming more common and in recognition of the economic challenges our communities are facing, our annual fan giveaway campaign helps bridge the gap between comfort, safety and affordability.”

Entergy Texas is implementing a series of additional measures to help customers and communities stay cool and pay their bills throughout the summer. In May, teams partnered with local contractors to offer A/C tune-ups and weatherization upgrades at no cost to customers during . Additionally, Entergy’s online  ensures customers have quick access to energy efficiency, bill management and financial assistance resources.

“Whether it’s working to provide bill payment assistance, distributing fans or weatherizing homes, Entergy Texas is committed to helping our customers in need,” added Barrett.

Save money and stay warm this winter with Entergy Texas /news/save-money-and-stay-warm-this-winter-with-entergy-texas Tue, 24 Dec 2024 07:38:00 +0000 /blog-post/save-money-and-stay-warm-this-winter-with-entergy-texas/ Easy tips to boost home efficiency and lower energy costs

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The holidays are here, and while Southeast Texas celebrates, winter weather could drive up heating costs. However, staying warm and comfortable doesn’t have to come at the cost of high energy bills. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can improve its energy efficiency and keep costs down throughout the colder months.

Air leaks and inefficient heating can lead to an additional $400 in home energy costs each year. Rather than cranking up the thermostat as temperatures drop, try these affordable and easy fixes.

Prepare for cold weather

  • Use solar energy: Open curtains on sunny windows during the day to naturally heat the home and close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.
  • Insulate drafty windows: Use plastic film or insulation kits to cover drafty windows and stop air leaks.
  • Adjust the thermostat:  Turn down your thermostat when you are asleep or out of the house to save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Maintain heating systems: Replace air filters, furnace and heat pumps regularly and schedule routine maintenance to keep your  running efficiently.
  • Reduce heat loss from the fireplace: Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning and check the seal on the fireplace flue damper and make it as snug as possible.

By following these simple steps, you can stay warm and comfortable all winter long while keeping your energy bills under control.

Entergy Texas also offers free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment. Visit entergy.com/energyefficiency for more information.

Daylight saving time ends Sunday, Nov. 3 /blog/daylight-saving-time-ends-sunday-nov-3 Wed, 30 Oct 2024 23:32:00 +0000 /daylight-saving-time-ends-sunday-nov-3 The time to “fall back” is quickly approaching

As we dive deeper into fall, many of us are starting to enjoy the chilly mornings and may even look forward to an occasional pumpkin spice latte. As much as we enjoy seasonal changes, there is one hallmark of fall that sparks as much competition as the most storied football rivalries: the end of daylight saving time.

This year, daylight saving time will end on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 a.m., so before you go to bed on Saturday night, don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour.

While some may like the “fall back” part of the time changes because it provides an extra hour of sleep on that night, the changes can disturb circadian rhythms and sleep, so prepare time to adjust. Your natural tendencies as either a morning person or an evening person, as well as how much sleep you get on a regular basis, can impact how disruptive the time adjustment will be for you.

Even though we may not like changing our clocks twice a year, it provides a convenient reminder for a few items around your house and community.

  • Check your home safety list and review your
  • Have your furnace serviced by a certified technician to make sure it is operating safely and efficiently.
  • Change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Every home should have a carbon monoxide detector to help detect the colorless and odorless gas that can cause serious illness or death.
  • Watch for children in your neighborhood. With fewer hours of daylight, it may be more difficult to see students going to and from the school bus in the mornings and evenings.

By taking these simple steps, you can make the transition to standard time smoother and safely prepare your home for the season ahead.

Entergy Texas welcomes fall with safety reminders /news/entergy-texas-welcomes-fall-with-safety-reminders Tue, 24 Sep 2024 02:37:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-texas-welcomes-fall-with-safety-reminders/ These simple tips can help you avoid accidents and injuries

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Although warmer weather is still lingering around, soon cooler temps will be here. This time of year can also bring opportunities for customers to tackle home improvement or landscaping projects. As fun and gratifying as these activities can be, no one wants them to result in an accident or injury. Entergy Texas has some helpful tips for staying safe this fall.

Stay safe outdoors

The Halloween season brings children the fun of wearing costumes, enjoying candy and attending fall festivals and carnivals. The offers tips to help children celebrate safely. Prepare to welcome trick-or-treaters to your home safely by checking outdoor lights and making sure walkways and steps are well-lit and free of any tripping hazards. Any extension cords should be specifically designated for outdoor use. Use rubber gaskets in light sockets or hang sockets downward to keep water out and remember to turn outside lights and decorations off when you are away from home or asleep. Help children with videos, activities and other resources.

Keep safety first with home projects

Fall is a great time to tidy up and prep your property for winter. When cleaning up fallen leaves and branches or trimming trees, always use caution and be aware of overhead lines. Position your ladder away from overhead wires, so trimmings will not fall onto power lines. If this happens, always assume downed wires are energized and call 1-800-ENTERGY for help.

If your fall spruce-up includes digging up flower beds, trees or shrubs, remember to call before you dig. Calling 811 before you dig will keep you safe and prevent disruption of utility services to your neighborhood.

When performing maintenance activities that require a ladder inside or out, be sure to wear proper footwear, position the ladder on a flat surface, and have someone nearby to spot you.

Daylight Saving Time ends November 3

When Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, Nov. 3, fewer hours of daylight will make it harder to see children going to and from the school bus in the mornings and evenings. When driving, avoid distractions and watch for children in the neighborhood. The offers additional tips for ensuring children arrive to and from school safely.

When setting your clocks to fall back an hour, take the time to check the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. All homes should contain a carbon monoxide detector to help identify the colorless and odorless gas that can cause serious illness or death.

Stay safe and warm indoors

Candles can add a warm ambience to an autumn evening, but remember it is never safe to leave candles burning unattended. A small sputter or an errant flame can cause a fire in an instant.

They are large consumers of energy and a fire hazard and should be kept at least three feet away from draperies, rugs and furniture. Additionally, homeowners who use a gas or electric furnace should schedule an appointment for service by a certified technician to make sure it is safe for operation and for greatest efficiency.

A wood-burning stove or fireplace can add warmth and coziness to a room but should also be used with caution and proper preparation. Have your chimney cleaned by a professional before the first fire is lit. Fallen leaves, animal nests and other debris can cause the smoke to vent into your home rather than outside and cause a fire.

Remember to replace dirty air filters inside and remove debris from the unit outside to ensure your HVAC unit works efficiently through all seasons.

Be ready for inclement weather

lasts through the end of November, so it is important to not let your guard down even when the weather begins to cool. Prepare now for severe weather that may come your way by

Hurricane Beryl: An open letter to our customers /stormcenter/hurricane-beryl-open-letter-our-customers Thu, 18 Jul 2024 23:05:00 +0000 /hurricane-beryl-open-letter-our-customers We sincerely appreciate your patience and understanding as our dedicated teams worked tirelessly to restore power to the areas affected by Hurricane Beryl. Our employees know firsthand the hardships for customers caused by power outages, especially during the summer, and I want to personally express my gratitude for your unwavering support as we strived to bring power back to over 252,000 affected customers.

The impact of Hurricane Beryl was severe, with heavy rain, peak wind gusts up to 97 miles per hour, and even a tornado hitting the Entergy Texas service area, resulting in widespread debris and damage to our electrical system – mainly driven by fallen trees and vegetation. Thanks to the efforts of more than 2,500 restoration workers, we were able to make repairs and restore power to nearly all impacted customers just one week after Hurricane Beryl’s landfall. This included repairing more than the distance between Conroe and Austin in downed power lines.

In addition to our restoration efforts, we also donated for storm relief and actively promoted cooling centers across our service area to further support our communities during this challenging time.

Our commitment is to provide safe, reliable, and affordable power to our communities, even amidst extreme weather events. With storms impacting the Gulf Coast region more frequently and with greater intensity, we are making even more strategic investments to strengthen the Southeast Texas power grid. In June of this year, we filed an application with the Public Utility Commission of Texas for approval of Phase I of our comprehensive Texas Future Ready Resiliency Plan. Once approved, the plan will benefit customers by decreasing future storm restoration costs by approximately $129 million and reducing the duration of power outages following significant weather events like hurricanes by 4.5 billion minutes over the next fifty years. You can find more details about our plans to improve your service .

Thank you again for your continued trust and support.

Entergy Texas’ first solar resource helps customers meet sustainability goals /news/entergy-texas-first-solar-resource-helps-customers-meet-sustainability-goals Thu, 18 Apr 2024 06:17:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-texas-first-solar-resource-helps-customers-meet-sustainability-goals/ The Umbriel Solar facility provides enough clean energy to power more than 30,000 homes

POLK COUNTY, Texas РTexas is the in the nation, and with rapid growth comes an increased demand for electricity. As the demand for power grows in Southeast Texas, many homeowners and businesses are requesting cleaner energy options to help support their climate and environmental goals.

“Generating electricity from renewable resources plays an important role in building a cleaner energy future, and Entergy Texas is seeking ways to diversify its generation portfolio and support the growing energy needs within our communities,” said Abigail Weaver, Entergy Texas director of resource planning and market operations. “By listening to our customers and understanding their sustainability needs, we are leading the way for adding more low-emission and carbon-free resources to the generation mix here in Southeast Texas.”

The Umbriel Solar facility is Entergy Texas’ first contracted solar resource that was selected through a renewables-focused request for proposals. The facility is owned and operated by , a US-based renewable energy developer. Located in Polk County, Texas, Umbriel Solar generates 150 MWac (202 MWdc) of electricity, which is enough energy to power more than 30,000 homes. The renewable energy generated helps avoid approximately 250,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. To put it more plainly — the addition of this new facility is equivalent to taking approximately 55,000 cars off the road each year that the facility is in operation.

Longroad finished construction of Umbriel Solar in November 2023, which is when Entergy Texas started receiving solar energy via its with the project.

“Longroad commends Entergy Texas on responding to the dual demands of generating more power and meeting customers’ desire for clean, renewable energy,” said Adam Horwitz, vice president of origination and development operations for Longroad ϳԹ. “We are proud that Longroad’s Umbriel Solar reached commercial operations, and has the distinction of being Entergy Texas’ first large-scale, solar energy resource.”¬†

Entergy Texas customers can directly benefit from Umbriel Solar by enrolling in the company’s program. The voluntary program provides the benefits of solar generation without the burden of owning solar panels. Under the new program, customers have the option to subscribe to a specified amount of renewable power and receive Renewable ϳԹ Credits and bill credits based on their subscription level.

Hard work makes no news good news /stormcenter/hard-work-makes-no-news-good-news Thu, 01 Feb 2024 06:49:00 +0000 /hard-work-makes-no-news-good-news There is an old adage that says: “no news is good news.” This came to mind as I thought about the recent winter weather we experienced in Southeast Texas. Entergy Texas customers saw record cold temperatures, heavy winds and winter precipitation. What Entergy Texas customers didn’t see was the need for temporary, rolling outages or the ask for customers to conserve energy. This was despite our customers reaching levels of electricity usage close to all-time highs. And while any power outage is without question undesired, no Entergy Texas customer suffered an outage longer than 24 hours.

In other words, as it relates to power in our 27-county service area, there wasn’t much to report in the way of widespread outages. And that’s what we want: minimal interruptions for our customers so it’s one less worry for them at a time when weather threatens. Our grid operator plays a major role in making that happen. While most of Texas lies in the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), Entergy Texas, along with a few other utilities in Southeast Texas, operates in the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) power grid. We work alongside MISO to maintain a careful balance of electricity demand with available supply from resources located throughout MISO, which extends across a 15-state region in the midsection of the United States and the Canadian province of Manitoba.

Success in our business is when our customers never have to think about their power. Being taken for granted is the highest compliment we can possibly get. Making no news, however, takes a lot of work. It takes the coordination of thousands of people, in multiple locations, working in unison around the clock – all to help minimize the effects for the communities we proudly serve.

Our incident command team starts with working to forecast where best to place our resources, so they are closest to the customers most likely to see the most severe weather and corresponding outages. Our power delivery crews work before, during and after any storm – whether maintaining vegetation, securing the right equipment or contracting with additional personnel to be on standby ahead of time and throughout a restoration.

Our plant employees execute pre-designed plans to winterize their facilities to maintain operations throughout extreme cold weather, so power supply is not interrupted. Our resource management group works with our transmission staff to make sure power can be secured outside of our state and routed to our service area in Texas for back-up generation during peak demand, if necessary.

Our “war room” is established to keep all of these teams aligned, which is essential when it’s time for our communications staff to relay timely and helpful information to our customers. During an event, we also maintain close coordination and communication with MISO, our regulators, state officials, and emergency management personnel. And, in the very rare, worst-case scenario when rolling outages are necessary, our operations and customer service teams coordinate with local officials to implement prepared plans that make sure hospitals, police and fire stations, warming centers and other critical community infrastructure and facilities stay online.

Even years before a storm hits, the time and money our people responsibly invest in building a more resilient grid prevent many potential outages before they start and shorten the duration of those that do. Our weather today is more extreme than ever and sometimes, even our best planning and execution cannot compete with the strength and unpredictability of Mother Nature. But more times than not, Entergy Texas employees have weathered some of the most difficult conditions to keep our customers ON when they need it most.

I am very proud of the men and women of our company who worked through a holiday weekend and stayed focused on their critical jobs during extremely wintry conditions.
