The company has taken a series of proactive pre-winter actions to prepare to serve our Southeast Texas customers during extreme temperatures, including:

Save money and stay warm this winter with Entergy Texas /news/save-money-and-stay-warm-this-winter-with-entergy-texas Tue, 24 Dec 2024 07:38:00 +0000 /blog-post/save-money-and-stay-warm-this-winter-with-entergy-texas/ Easy tips to boost home efficiency and lower energy costs

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The holidays are here, and while Southeast Texas celebrates, winter weather could drive up heating costs. However, staying warm and comfortable doesn’t have to come at the cost of high energy bills. By making a few simple changes around your home, you can improve its energy efficiency and keep costs down throughout the colder months.

Air leaks and inefficient heating can lead to an additional $400 in home energy costs each year. Rather than cranking up the thermostat as temperatures drop, try these affordable and easy fixes.

Prepare for cold weather

  • Use solar energy: Open curtains on sunny windows during the day to naturally heat the home and close them at night to reduce the chill from cold windows.
  • Insulate drafty windows: Use plastic film or insulation kits to cover drafty windows and stop air leaks.
  • Adjust the thermostat:  Turn down your thermostat when you are asleep or out of the house to save as much as 10% a year on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Maintain heating systems: Replace air filters, furnace and heat pumps regularly and schedule routine maintenance to keep your  running efficiently.
  • Reduce heat loss from the fireplace: Keep the fireplace damper closed unless a fire is burning and check the seal on the fireplace flue damper and make it as snug as possible.

By following these simple steps, you can stay warm and comfortable all winter long while keeping your energy bills under control.

Entergy Texas also offers free comprehensive residential energy audits and rebates to help reduce the upfront cost of installing energy-efficient equipment. Visit entergy.com/energyefficiency for more information.

Entergy Texas – Lower temps don’t have to mean higher bills /news/entergy-texas-lower-temps-don-t-have-mean-higher-bills Fri, 16 Dec 2022 08:03:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-texas-lower-temps-don-t-have-mean-higher-bills/ Decrease your electricity usage by implementing energy efficiency practices

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Winter has officially arrived, with colder temperatures impacting the region, but that doesn’t mean your usage and electric bill must increase.

Heating costs can account for more than 50% of a customer’s monthly energy usage because it takes more energy to heat a home in extreme temperatures. Instead of cranking up the thermostat, take advantage of no-cost or low-cost steps to help save energy and money on your utility bill.

Prepare for winter weather

Keep heating costs low this season by taking these steps to improve energy efficiency:

  • Seal air leaks. Use caulk or weatherstripping around doors, windows and any location where there may be a path between the inside and outside.
  • Adjust the thermostat. Set the thermostat to 68 degrees during winter months, and dress in layers to stay warm. Each degree above 68 can increase your energy bill by about 3%.
  • Conserve hot water. Set your hot water heater’s thermostat to 120 degrees, or the medium setting. Wrap electric water heaters with water heater blankets, which can be found at home improvement stores.
  • Keep doors and windows closed. Constant traffic will let out warm air, forcing your heater to work harder to keep the room at a set temperature.
  • Ensure fans are turning the right way. Fans should be run at a low speed clockwise during the winter to prevent the cold air from blowing down on you.
  • Replace air filters. Dirty filters make your heating system work harder. Replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Leverage the sun. During the day, open your curtains and blinds to let in the warm sunlight. Close them at night to reduce heat loss.

Customers are also encouraged to take advantage of Entergy Solutions programs, including a comprehensive residential energy audit and some on-the-spot upgrades, like LED lights and weatherstripping. This is available to qualifying customers at no additional cost, and more information is available online at .

If you’ve made your home as energy efficient as possible and the bill still seems to be higher than it should be, contact our customer service representatives at 1-800-ENTERGY. Our representatives can investigate customer accounts, verify whether the billings are correct and provide additional information about a particular account.

Staying safe in ice and snow /blog/staying-safe-in-ice-snow Sat, 05 Feb 2022 00:11:00 +0000 /staying-safe-in-ice-snow Winter weather has arrived in our service area, which presents several challenges to those who rarely experience snowy, icy conditions. From removing snow and ice to dressing appropriately and avoiding falls, winter safety should always be top of mind. Stay safe and warm this season with the following tips.

To stay warm:

  • Cover every part of your body — including your face — and wear layers of loose-fitting clothing to protect against frostbite and hypothermia. In cold weather, your body actually loses heat faster than it can produce it.
  • Stay inside when temperatures are dangerously cold. And remember that certain people are at higher risk than others, especially the elderly.
  • Seek immediate medical attention for any person whose body temperature falls below 95°F.

To get around safely:

  • Wear sensible footwear when streets and sidewalks are snow-covered and icy. Flat-soled shoes with treads — not smooth soles — make it easier to plant your entire foot securely on the surface, which improves balance. Water-resistant boots designed to protect your feet from the cold are also a good choice.
  • Walk slowly and take shorter steps in icy, snowy conditions. This allows for adequate reaction time if you suddenly encounter a slippery patch of pavement.
  • Wear bright clothing so others can see you in wintry conditions. Something as simple as a colorful scarf or hat can make a big difference.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. When walking, always look ahead to anticipate any change in conditions, such as a patch of ice or uneven pavement. Avoid using headphones that block out the sound of oncoming vehicles.

To remove ice and snow:

  • Take time to stretch before you start to shovel snow. This helps prevent injury, especially because you’ll be using muscles that may have been inactive for a while.
  • Avoid heavy lifting. A better approach is to push the snow off to the side because it requires less exertion, and that means less stress on your body.
  • Take water breaks. Just as you would during any physical activity, it helps you stay adequately hydrated. Periodic rests are a must, especially if you’re not accustomed to this type of intense activity.
  • Use a shovel with a long arm and a blade that’s somewhat flat. It will be easier on your back. Lifting heavy snow is never a good idea, but if you must, bend at the knees and let your legs do the work.

This winter, avoid accidents and stay warm by heeding these tips for staying safe in icy, snowy conditions.

Winter is Coming: The Time to Implement ϳԹ-Saving Measures is Now /news/winter-coming-the-time-implement-energy-saving-measures-now-1911 Mon, 12 Dec 2016 12:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/winter-coming-the-time-implement-energy-saving-measures-now-1911/ Helpful tips make it easy to reduce usage and save money

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Wet weather and cold air are rolling through southeast Texas just in time for the holidays. As you break out your coat and gloves, there’s no time like the present to implement helpful energy-saving tips so you can keep the cash in your wallet while keeping the cold outside where it belongs.

“We haven’t had much in the way of cool weather, but that’s starting to change,” said Vernon Pierce, vice president of customer service for Entergy Texas. “When that cold weather rolls through, it is important to winterize your house to help save you money.”

Heating and air conditioning can account for as much as 55 percent of your monthly electric bill. Setting the thermostat to 68 degrees in the winter is an easy way to reduce how much energy you use. Every degree above 68 on the thermostat can increase your bill by about 3 percent. So if you crank it up to a toasty 78 degrees, you’ve already added 30 percent. Other tips include:

  • Seal leaks around your doors and windows to make your home more energy-efficient.
  • Keep all doors and windows closed when the heat is on.
  • Open drapes to let warm sunlight in during the day. Close them at night to reduce heat loss.
  • Schedule a heating system checkup with a licensed professional if you haven’t already done so.
  • Do not block heat registers or air returns with curtains or furniture.
  • Check air and furnace filters every 30 days or as required by the type of filter. Clean or replace them as needed.
  • Conserve hot water. Wrap your electric water heater with a water heater blanket and set the thermostat to 120 degrees or medium.
  • Close the damper on fireplaces when not in use.
  • When you change your light bulbs, replace them with energy-efficient models. Entergy recommends ENERGY STAR-qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs that use 70 percent less energy and last up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
  • Set the thermostat back to 55 degrees if away from home for several days.

More tips, as well as clear, do-it-yourself videos, to help put these ideas to work can be found at . Customers can also visit for the program in their area.

Entergy also assists elderly and disabled low-income customers through its customer-assistance fund, The Power to Care. The fund is administered by the local Councils on Aging and is funded by Entergy employees, customers and shareholders. To find out how to get assistance, or to contribute to the fund, visit or check the donation box on your monthly bill.
