The companies today signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly evaluate the delivery of clean energy from offshore wind to industrial customers in Texas and Louisiana.

Under this MOU, RWE and Entergy agree to assess four key areas to define an optimal route-to-market including: market demand for carbon-free energy for customers of Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans and Entergy Texas; resource economics; transmission analysis to ensure reliability; economic impacts extending to direct and indirect job creation; and curricula to prepare the workforce of the future.

“The existing Gulf of Mexico oil and gas supply chain, workforce, and port infrastructure represent unique advantages to a potential offshore wind hub,” said Sam Eaton, CEO of RWE offshore holdings LLC. “Working together with a local partner like Entergy can deepen our understanding of the next steps to strengthen these valuable assets and support a new, regional industry. RWE’s early success in the U.S. has positioned us well to continue preparing future markets for a robust clean energy economy powered by offshore wind.”

“Our customers continue to share with us that they are seeking clean energy solutions to help them reach their own sustainability goals,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “This partnership serves as an important early step to potentially bringing wind power to our Louisiana shores and foster even greater economic growth in Louisiana.”

“We continue to move closer to achieving our goal of being a leader in clean energy,” said Deanna Rodriguez, Entergy New Orleans president and CEO. “Our work with RWE will help us understand the technical and economic viability of this resource. Over time, we expect wind to be one of several resources needed to support the needs of the communities in which we serve.”

“Entergy Texas is perfectly positioned to explore offshore wind development as Texas already leads the nation in electricity generated by wind energy,” said Eliecer Viamontes, Entergy Texas president and CEO. “The state and our service area are growing at a rapid rate and this partnership with RWE will play a key role in evaluating a broader slate of clean resources that will sustain our robust pace of industrial growth and economic development in the decades to come.”

RWE and Entergy share a common goal of meeting the demand for increased renewable energy, while investing in economic development and our communities.

RWE is a leading renewables developer in the U.S. with 8 gigawatts of operating capacity and an ambitious growth plan backed by a project pipeline of more than 24 GW of onshore wind, solar and battery storage. RWE is also expanding its global offshore wind activities in the rapidly growing market in the U.S. Through two offshore wind lease auctions in 2022, namely in the New York Bight and California, RWE has secured sites with the potential to host a total of about 3.9 GW (pro rata RWE) installed capacity in offshore wind.

Entergy serves approximately 3 million customers across its four-state territory and is accelerating its investments in renewable power generation while helping customers meet their own environmental goals. The company’s existing renewable resources will triple over the next three years, with plans for as much as 17 gigawatts of renewable capacity by the end of 2031. Entergy remains committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The Gulf of Mexico is next on the Bureau of Ocean ϳԹ Management’s offshore wind lease auction schedule with three lease areas proposed under the Pre-Sale Notice. The region has gained momentum following Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards’ Climate Action Plan, which includes a goal of 5 GW of offshore wind power by 2035. In 2022, RWE in collaboration with Greater New Orleans, Inc. initiated a program to accelerate the engagement of Louisiana’s supply chain to identify companies with transferable capabilities for offshore wind. Results from the supply chain collaboration are expected to be released industrywide later this year.

Entergy Texas issues RFP for 2,000 MW of renewable resources /news/entergy-texas-issues-rfp-for-2-000-mw-renewable-resources Fri, 02 Dec 2022 11:33:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-texas-issues-rfp-for-2-000-mw-renewable-resources/ Company calls for solar, wind resources to add to existing portfolio

THE WOODLANDS, Texas – Entergy Texas recently issued a request for proposals for 2,000 megawatts of solar and wind generation resources. The solicitation for emissions-free renewables can provide cost-effective energy supply, capacity, fuel diversity and other benefits to customers for years to come.

“As the demand for energy grows, so does the need to seek diverse resources to meet the changing needs of our customers,” said Abigail Weaver, Entergy Texas director of resource planning and market operations. “Customers from all sectors are interested in access to sustainable sources of energy, and Entergy Texas is pleased to help meet our customers’ sustainability goals by investing in a diverse fuel supply.”

Wind and solar generation resources provide a large amount of clean power over the course of the year with no added fuel costs, helping to provide lower cost energy. Additionally, the RFP allows bidders to offer battery storage options to further enhance the wind and solar resources’ ability to meet customer needs.

Our commitment to providing reliable, affordable and sustainable energy is evidenced in prior solicitations. From 2019 to just prior to this latest RFP, Entergy Texas has issued two RFPs totaling 600 MW.

“The request for 2,000 MW of renewable resources also marks a major milestone for Entergy Texas, as this is the largest solicitation of renewable resources in company history,” said Eliecer Viamontes, Entergy Texas president and CEO. “Adding renewable energy to diversify our mix of power generation sources is part of our strategy for keeping rates low for existing customers and remaining more competitive for businesses looking to expand or locate their next operation in Texas.”

Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans and Diamond Offshore Wind seek to evaluate offshore wind /news/entergy-louisiana-entergy-new-orleans-diamond-offshore-wind-seek-evaluate-offshore-wind Sat, 24 Sep 2022 07:00:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-entergy-new-orleans-diamond-offshore-wind-seek-evaluate-offshore-wind/ Companies partner on the future development of offshore wind power to serve Louisiana customers

JEFFERSON, La. – Entergy Louisiana, Entergy New Orleans and Diamond Offshore Wind, a subsidiary of Diamond Generating Corporation, today announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding regarding the evaluation and potential early development of wind power generation in the Gulf of Mexico. The agreement could put Entergy in a position to deliver another source of clean power to customers while also strengthening the region’s economic development.

“This is an important first step to possibly bring wind power to our Louisiana shores,” said Phillip May, Entergy Louisiana president and CEO. “While there remains work to be done before that happens, we are excited by the opportunity to begin this process. We aspire to help our communities thrive for generations to come, and this marks yet another milestone in honoring that mission.”

“Clean and affordable power is a driver of economic growth, resulting in increased investments and good paying, green jobs in our communities,” added Deanna Rodriguez, Entergy New Orleans president and CEO. “Entergy New Orleans understands the importance of serving customers with clean energy to reduce the impacts of climate change and doing so in a way that keeps service affordable to families and businesses in New Orleans. This agreement creates another possible avenue to meet those demands.”

The MOU provides a legal framework for Entergy and Diamond Offshore Wind to work toward the development of potential offshore wind demonstration projects located in Louisiana state waters and will focus in the near term on the evaluation of grid interconnection to determine the optimal size and locations of future offshore wind development.

Earlier this year, Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards submitted the Louisiana Climate Action Plan, which offered a series of recommendations that can lead Louisiana to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 – a key action from that plan is to achieve five gigawatts of offshore wind generation by 2035. Development of wind energy in the Gulf of Mexico will accelerate the state’s role as a leader in renewable energy development, and drive collaboration between state and federal agencies, utilities, the private sector, and our states colleges and universities. Entergy is proud to be a leader in this exciting future for Louisiana.

“Diamond Offshore Wind is pleased to announce our partnership with Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans to explore building the first offshore wind project in Louisiana state waters and in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Chris Wissemann, CEO of Diamond Offshore Wind. “Louisiana has a tremendous opportunity to develop an offshore wind industry that services the entire country, and through this project, we hope to accelerate its development, create jobs, provide a renewable source of power to Louisiana customers, and help Louisiana meet its climate goals.”

Entergy Louisiana currently has approximately 280 megawatts of renewable resources, including the , which began delivering power to the grid in October 2020. Along with nuclear generation, nearly 30% of the company’s portfolio comes from renewable resources. In addition, the LPSC recently approved of solar power with an additional 2,000 megawatts in the queue.

Entergy New Orleans’ diverse generation portfolio includes the 20-megawatts New Orleans Solar Station and the soon to be completed Iris Solar and St. James Solar projects, which will add an additional 70 megawatts of clean energy. In addition, the company has 5 megawatts of solar installed on commercial and residential roofs. Together with nuclear, these carbon-free resources account for nearly 40% of the company’s generation capacity and will continue to decrease Entergy New Orleans’ carbon emissions, which today are already nearly 40% below the national average.

ϳԹ has been an industry leader in voluntary climate action for more than two decades. In 2001, the company was the first U.S. electric utility to commit to voluntarily stabilizing greenhouse gas emissions. That goal has since been accelerated with a commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

As a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, Diamond Offshore Wind, its parents, and affiliates bring decades of experience successfully developing, constructing, and operating major energy assets, both domestically within the U.S. and internationally, including seven commercial scale offshore wind projects and 13 offshore wind transmission projects.

About Diamond Offshore Wind

Diamond Offshore Wind is a wholly owned subsidiary of Diamond Generating Corporation (DGC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation, and was formed by DGC to develop, own, and operate offshore wind projects in the U.S.

Building on MC’s success in the global offshore wind market and DGC’s deep experience and outstanding performance as a U.S. independent power producer, Diamond Offshore Wind is uniquely positioned to be a strong, long-term leader in the burgeoning U.S. offshore wind market.
