Are your energy dollars going up in smoke? /blog/are-your-energy-dollars-going-up-in-smoke-2 Mon, 17 Feb 2025 22:41:17 +0000 /?p=13552 A wood-burning fireplace is beautiful and creates a cozy atmosphere, but it’s not an efficient way to heat a home. It can actually increase your winter energy bills! Nearly 90 percent of the heat produced by a wood-burning fireplace is lost through the chimney. Also, an open fireplace pulls in more air than is needed for burning, reducing the efficiency of your home even more.

ϳԹ-saving accessories, combined with regular maintenance, can help improve the efficiency of your fireplace while preserving its charm.

ϳԹ-saving extras

A number of fireplace add-ons can help save energy and reduce heat loss:

  • Flue sealers.Flue sealers are removable stoppers that prevent air from escaping through the chimney. These inflatable devices are inexpensive, and easy to install and remove. Place the flue sealer just below the damper to prevent heat loss and downdrafts when the fireplace is not in use. For maximum efficiency, have the flue cleaned before installation.
  • Doors and covers.Glass fireplace doors are designed to fit standard firebox openings. Secure fitting frames with fiberglass seals and adjustable inlet vents reduce heat loss. Removable fireplace covers- which are less expensive than glass doors-fit tightly around the fireplace opening to prevent heat loss when the fireplace is not in use.
  • Heat exchangers.Heat exchangers circulate warm air and force heat back into the room. While they improve the heating capacity of a fireplace by up to 10 percent, heat exchangers require routine cleaning to remove soot buildup, and installation is often expensive and complicated.
  • Inserts.By sealing off heat loss and radiating heat into the room, fireplace inserts can improve the efficiency of your fireplace by 65 percent or more. Double- and single-wall units are available, with double-wall models being the most energy efficient. Optional air-circulating fans improve heat distribution and overall efficiency. Professional installation is recommended.

Put a damper on heat loss

The damper on your fireplace is designed to prevent the warm air generated by your furnace from being lost through your chimney when the fireplace is not in use. Wear and tear can warp the damper so that it no longer seals tightly, reducing efficiency. Have your chimney cleaned and inspected each year by a certified professional. If the seal on the damper is not working properly, have it repaired or replaced.

Don’t let your energy dollars go up in smoke! You can save even more by checking out Entergy’s commercial and residential energy efficiency programs, which feature everything from free weatherization to rebates on energy efficient appliances.Seewhat’s available in your area.

Entergy Arkansas reminds customers of winter bill management and assistance options /news/entergy-arkansas-reminds-customers-of-winter-bill-management-and-assistance-options Thu, 13 Feb 2025 05:02:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-arkansas-reminds-customers-of-winter-bill-management-and-assistance-options/ January’s snowfall and below-freezing temps may have increased customers’ energy usage

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Entergy Arkansas is reminding customers about available bill management and assistance resources after the company’s service area saw historic winter and record-breaking energy demand in January.

“This January brought snowfall and several consecutive days of below-freezing temperatures, causing some customers to use more energy to heat their homes,” said Ventrell Thompson, vice president of customer service for Entergy Arkansas. “Higher usage can lead to higher-than-normal bills, but we’re committed to providing resources, tools and payment options to help customers manage their energy costs through the winter months.”

Extreme weather impact and historic energy demand

According to the National Weather Service, January brought prolonged stretches of below average and even freezing temperatures to communities in Entergy Arkansas’ service area. The entire state of Arkansas experienced a significant winter storm January 9-10 that brought substantial snowfall to many areas, including more than six inches of snow in Little Rock, and a wintry mix of precipitation to the southern part of the state.

The chart below shows the average temperature lows and actual temperature lows from January 1-26 for these areas.

During this time period, the Little Rock area saw 14 days of temperatures at or below the average low. This extreme weather caused historic energy consumption as customers relied heavily on heaters and other appliances to stay warm.

The Entergy companies combined reached a new winter peak load of approximately 21,336 megawatt-hours during the week of Jan. 20, surpassing the previous record by nearly 790 MWh. Entergy Arkansas, specifically, surpassed its previous peak set in January 2024.

ϳԹ usage varies by household

While cold weather drives increased energy consumption, the impact on individual customers varies based on numerous factors, such as thermostat settings, home size, insulation and location.

It takes a lot of power to heat homes, and this increased energy consumption can lead to higher-than-normal bills. For example, if it is 90 degrees outside and you want to cool your home to 72, that is a difference of 18 degrees. Meanwhile, if it is 30 degrees outside and you want to warm your home to 68, that is a difference of 38 degrees. The wider the temperature difference, the harder your system works.

Entergy grid remains resilient through historic cold weather peak usage /stormcenter/entergy-grid-remains-resilient-through-historic-cold-weather-peak-usage Thu, 06 Feb 2025 22:24:29 +0000 /?p=13518 During the week of Jan. 19, an arctic blast brought record-breaking low temperatures and historic snowfall to the South. This once-in-a-lifetime winter storm blanketed a large swath of our service area, bringing up to a foot of snow in the New Orleans French Quarter and covering Mississippi’s beaches, as well. Throughout the cold weather, Entergy’s grid recorded peak electricity usage, remaining reliable while lineworkers braved difficult conditions to restore power following outages caused by snow, ice, sleet and freezing temperatures.

Meeting the demands of historic electricity usage during arctic blast

Entergy customers used more electricity during the January winter storm than ever before in cold-weather months, surpassing the peak winter usage recorded in the storms of January 2024. Entergy Arkansas, Louisiana, New Orleans and Texas service areas all recorded new high peak usage records, while Entergy Mississippi neared its record of peak usage.

As cold weather drove increased energy usage, Entergy closely monitored our equipment and weather conditions, taking appropriate steps to ensure reliable delivery of power to our customers. This included working closely with MISO, the electric grid operator for the central United States, to monitor grid conditions and prepare generators accordingly. Despite the record-breaking power usage,Entergy’s fleet maintained production margins and provided enough generation to meet the energy load throughout the storm.

Storm ready: responding to winter weather events

While the January weather event did cause localized outages, crews quickly and safely restored power to just over 13,000 customers who lost service across Entergy’s service territory throughout the three day-event while navigating freezing temperatures, icy roads and hazardous working conditions.

The winter storm most heavily impacted Louisiana, bringing unique challenges like downed tree limbs and the strain of cold-load pickup, an increase in energy demand as power is restored to areas impacted by extreme cold. Despite these challenges, the company’s systems and teams proved resilient, minimizing the impact on customers across the state. Just two weeks prior, Entergy Arkansas swiftly restored power to its customers during awith snow accumulations of nearly 15 inches in some areas and more than a quarter-inch of ice in others according to the National Weather Service.

Entergy stays storm ready with extensivewinter weather readiness measuresand remains prepared to respond to the next weather event.

“Our region has faced intense and prolonged winter weather this January, leading to increased energy usage as customers worked to keep their homes warm,” said Elizabeth Adams, Entergy chief customer officer. “Higher usage can lead to higher-than-normal bills, but we’re here to help with a variety of resources, tools and payment options to support our customers through the winter season.”

Extreme weather impact and historic energy demand

January brought prolonged stretches of below-freezing temperatures to many communities across Entergy’s service area. In the Greater New Orleans area, snowfall totals exceeded eight inches, breaking the previous official record of 2.7 inches set in 1963. Southwest Louisiana and the Capital Region also saw record-setting snowfall, with some areas accumulating up to a foot.

During January, metropolitan areas across Entergy’s service area experienced prolonged stretches of temperatures 20 to 30 degrees below the average low. In fact, temperatures in our region were consistently lower than normal through January 26.

It takes a lot of power to heat homes, and this increased energy consumption can lead to higher-than-normal bills. For example, if it is 90 degrees outside and you want to cool your home to 72, that is a difference of 18 degrees. Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans: Winter weather response and system performance /news/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-winter-weather-response-and-system-performance Fri, 24 Jan 2025 07:08:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-winter-weather-response-and-system-performance/ NEW ORLEANS – In the wake of historic winter weather conditions in Louisiana, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans are proud to share the results of extensive preparation and response efforts during the event. Despite record-low temperatures and snowfall, the company’s systems and teams proved resilient, minimizing the impact on customers across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Louisiana shattered historic lows, by more than 10-degrees in some locations, accompanied by significant snowfall in some areas. In Greater New Orleans alone, snowfall totals climbed to over 8-inches, eclipsing the previous known record of just 2.7-inches set back in 1963 (reliable data was not kept until 1948). Southwest Louisiana and the Capital Region also saw record-setting weather with some sites totaling one-foot of snow.

Despite these conditions, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans experienced peak outages of just approximately 6,500 and 2,400 customers, respectively.

“Our teams worked tirelessly in preparation and in in the face of unprecedented weather challenges,” said Jason Willis, vice president of reliability for Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans. “I want to personally thank our crews for their dedication and sacrifice during this event, as well as our customers for their patience and support as we worked to restore power safely and quickly when called upon.”

To assist in the restoration efforts, more than 2,750 workers were on-hand to support our communities statewide.

The winter storm brought unique challenges, including icy roadways, downed tree limbs, and the strain of cold-load pickup, an increase in energy demand as power is restored to areas impacted by extreme cold. However, through proactive measures, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans ensured that restoration efforts remained efficient and effective.

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans update on winter weather preparations /news/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-update-on-winter-weather-preparations Tue, 21 Jan 2025 07:11:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-louisiana-and-entergy-new-orleans-update-on-winter-weather-preparations/ NEW ORLEANS – As Louisiana braces for potentially historic winter weather, Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans remain dedicated to ensuring the safety of customers and restoring power as quickly and safely as possible should outages occur. Both companies have completed extensive patrols of their systems and taken additional measures to prepare for severe conditions.

Utility infrastructure can face unique challenges during extreme cold weather, such as heavy, wet snow combined with gusty winds, which can weigh down tree limbs and stress power lines along with an increased demand due to the frigid temperatures.

To assist in potential restoration efforts, 1,600 workers are on standby ready to support our communities statewide. However, customers should anticipate slower restoration times due to icy road conditions and cold-load pickup challenges.

As a reminder, out of an abundance of caution, both companies have made the decision to suspend disconnects through Sunday, Jan. 26.

Proactive Winter Preparations

Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans have implemented comprehensive steps to prepare for and mitigate the impact of the extreme cold, including:

  • Completed system patrols to identify and address vulnerabilities.
  • Insulating critical power plant equipment using improved methods and materials that allow them to withstand lower temperatures.
  • Insulating or draining piping within power generation facilities with potential for standing water during normal operation, to prevent freezing and breaks.
  • Inspecting and maintaining substations and transmission lines that are critical to Bulk Electric System reliability.
  • Inspecting and testing equipment that can be impacted by extreme cold, such as gas-filled circuit breakers.
  • Additional vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line.

As our teams prepare, we encourage our customers to prepare as well. Entergy’sprovides a list of safety tips, bill management assistance and energy efficiency resources to keep families safe and warm throughout the winter season.

Restoration Challenges

While crews are ready to respond, icy roads and other winter hazards are expected to slow travel and restoration efforts. Additionally, cold-load pickup, the increased energy demand that occurs when power is restored to systems impacted by extreme cold, may delay restoration times.

We’re storm ready, 365 days a year

To ensure our company and customers are prepared for the winter weather ahead, we continue to implement unique readiness plans at each power plant and review measures taken with transmission lines and transmission facilities, while reviewing critical systems and infrastructure preparedness across the grid.

When a weather threat arises, we. We use forecasts and computer models based on experience with previous storms to predict damages and associated restoration resource needs. Based on those estimates, the company may call onif needed to aid in restoring power safely and quickly for our customers. Entergy continuously plans and improves the process of assessing damage, positioning personnel in the right place with the required materials to restore power as safely and quickly as possible.

We take steps to maintain and control vegetation across our service area, completing annual clearing of right-of-way areas to minimize the impact from fallen trees or branches following a storm. Prior to storms impacting our area, vegetation crews perform pre-storm patrols of circuits to mitigate any imminent threats within the right of way. Our year-round storm preparations include the vegetation management program and the targeted “ground to sky”vegetation trimming, which removes tree limbs that would normally have been above the power line. We also use artificial intelligence and satellite imagery to help predict when trimming may be needed.

Entergy prepares for winter storm /stormcenter/entergy-prepares-for-winter-storm Mon, 20 Jan 2025 21:55:51 +0000 /?p=13438 A winter weather event is on the way. Now is the time for Entergy and our customers to complete last-minute preparations. We are prepared, and we want you to be prepared, too.

The impact of winter storms is very difficult to predict, but forecasts indicate the approaching weather system could bring below freezing temperatures, snow, ice or freezing rain beginning as early as this evening. We are all keenly aware of the damage major winter storms has caused in recent years. We’ve learned from them and we’re ready.

Cold weather restoration is handled differently

We use ain bringing customers back online after an outage in very cold weather, regardless of whether the initial cause of the outage was specifically weather-related. Rather than simply energizing an entire power line all at once, we must bring customers back online one section at a time to avoid damage to our system and making the situation worse.

Customer preparations and storm safety

Hazards are all around us following severe winter weather – from downed electric lines and equipment to personal generator risks.

Customers should be finalizing last-minute preparations as weather conditions allow. We want you and your family to remain safe with any preparations and precautions, especially for anticipated freezing temperatures and potentially dangerous surroundings outside – whether on the road or if the weather in your area brings winter conditions.

We urge customers to take extreme care with heaters, fireplaces and generators. Check in on your neighbors, especially seniors and disabled.

Personal generators are very useful following a disaster, but. The primary hazards to avoid when using a generator are carbon monoxide poisoning from the toxic engine exhaust, electric shock or electrocution and fire. Generators should be operated in accordance with manufacturers’ standards. Incorrectly connecting a generator to a home or building’s electrical system can create a danger for utility workers and the public.

Stay alert for. If you smell natural gas, or if you hear a blowing or hissing noise, open a window and leave the area immediately. Do not operate electrical switches. If possible, turn the outside main gas valve off and call your natural gas provider, remaining away from the potential leak. Entergy gas customers should call 1-800-ENTERGY (800-368-3749).

Above all, stay safe. Ais the best way to remain safe and be winter storm ready.

Entergy’s Louisiana utilities prepare for potential hard freeze, winter precipitation /news/entergys-louisiana-utilities-prepare-for-potential-hard-freeze-winter-precipitation Sun, 19 Jan 2025 07:14:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergys-louisiana-utilities-prepare-for-potential-hard-freeze-winter-precipitation/ NEW ORLEANS – Entergy Louisiana and Entergy New Orleans continue to actively monitor the frigid temperatures and winter precipitation expected to move through the region early next week. While forecasts are continually changing and the exact impact to the Louisiana service area is hard to predict, crews are prepared to respond to whatever Mother Nature delivers.

Out of an abundance of caution, both companies have made the decision to suspend disconnects through Sunday, Jan. 26.

Entergy has taken a series of proactive pre-winter actions to prepare to serve our customers during extreme temperatures, including:
