This initiative is organized by the National ϳԹ and Utility Affordability Coalition.

During LIHEAP Action Day, Entergy partnered with four action agencies, which strengthened the initiative’s success as they advocated to key policymakers on behalf of our vulnerable communities. They spent the day meeting with members of Congress, including U.S. Senators John Boozman of Arkansas and Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, educating them about LIHEAP’s critical service that helps low-income households afford utility costs. In total, Entergy visited 24 House and Senate offices, reinforcing how powerful these funds can be in the lives of our customers.

Patty Riddlebarger, Entergy vice presidentofCorporate Social Responsibility, and Craig Matthews, chiefexecutive officerofSMILE Community ActionAgency, at a breakfast hosted by theNational ϳԹand Utility Affordability Coalition.

“LIHEAP provides energy assistance for eligible families surviving on a limited or fixed income,” said Patty Riddlebarger, vice president of corporate social responsibility. “Funding is crucial especially with a rise in energy costs due to extreme weather conditions, high inflation and interest rates.”

According to the National ϳԹ and Utility Affordability Coalition, the number of households eligible for LIHEAP in the states where Entergy has residential customers total:

  • 326,000 in Arkansas.
  • 594,000 in Louisiana.
  • 337,000 in Mississippi.
  • 2,583,000 in Texas.

“Despite the large number of customers eligible for assistance, Entergy’s service area states are only able to serve about 12 percent of these households. We travel to the nation’s capital representing families who are unable to receive assistance due to insufficient funding. Without LIHEAP, many must choose between buying food or medicine and paying their electric bill,” said Liz Brister, manager of low-income programs.

Entergy employees and advocates participating in annual legislative updates in Washington, D.C., met with Sen. John Boozman and Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith.

Throughout the year, Entergy hosts multiple outreach events with community partners to increase awareness and support our customers with the LIHEAP application process. To learn more about LIHEAP and other energy assistance programs, visit entergy.com/billhelp.

Throw me something recyclable, mister /blog/throw-me-something-recyclable-mister Tue, 22 Feb 2022 02:00:00 +0000 /throw-me-something-recyclable-mister It’s Carnival season in New Orleans. A time for floats, throws and fun. But when the parades are over, the clean-up begins. And what a clean-up it is: more than 2.5 million pounds of debris is left on the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

This trash — plastic cups, doubloons, toys and beads – can make its way into storm drains, where it increases the chance for flooding, and into the environment, creating ahazardto wildlife. But with a little effort, these items can be collected and recycled.

That’s why we are proud to partner for a more sustainable Carnival season by supporting several projects through our Environmental Initiatives Fund.

The EIF, funded by company shareholders, identifies environmentally beneficial projects or programs that help better the environment by reducing emissions, protecting natural resources and restoring wetlands and forests.

Entergy is once again working with, a nonprofit organization focused on waste prevention, to increase recycling efforts and expand the use of eco-friendly throws and consumable goods. Formed in 2017, Grounds Krewe’s efforts have proven to be the most successful parade waste reduction and recycling effort in the history of New Orleans.

“Supporting a recycling program that helps ensure a sustainable Mardi Gras, which is so closely associated with our company hometown’s unique culture and appeal, fits well with our mission to add sustainable value to our communities and our commitment to protect the environment,” said Kelli Dowell, Entergy’s director of environmental policy.

On the Route Parade Recycling
Revelers will benefit from a parade recycling activity in partnership with Entergy, ArcGNO, The Urban Conservancy and Republic Services.

Paradegoers should be on the lookout for volunteers in neon vests Feb. 26, during the krewes of Iris and Tucks parades and Feb. 27, during the krewes of Okeanos, Mid-City and Thoth parades. Volunteerswill distribute labeled recycling bags to paradegoers before the first parade and collect unwanted throws, aluminum cans and plastic waste following the last parade.

Sustainable Throw Catalog
Entergy is also helping ensure a more sustainable Mardi Gras even before a parade begins. Grounds Krewe was awarded a grant from Entergy’s shareholder-funded Environmental Initiatives Fund to launch an online.

Catalog items are made from sustainable materials and biodegradable packaging and promote Louisiana’s unique culture. This year’s environmentally friendly options include red beans, jambalaya mix and ground coffee. Keep your eyes peeled and your hands raised high for these coveted sustainable throws throughout the Carnival season.

Employee volunteers help customers maximize tax returns /blog/employee-volunteers-help-customers-maximize-tax-returns Mon, 31 Jan 2022 22:32:00 +0000 /employee-volunteers-help-customers-maximize-tax-returns Entergy’s ongoing support of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites demonstrates the company’s commitmentto empowering families and growing our communities.Since 2009, oursupport of VITA sites has helped return $298 million to more than 164,000 residents throughout our service area.

For more than 12 years, Entergy employees have volunteered to help customers who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit receive assistance in claiming the money they’ve earned. And this year is no different. We will also continue our partnership with community advocates to support free IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance tax preparation services for qualifying customers.

The EarnedIncome Tax Creditis one of the nation’s most effective tools for lifting low-income workers and their families above the poverty line. The federal government estimates EITC has lifted more than 5.6 million people out of poverty, including 3 million children; however, it is estimated that one out of five people who qualify for the EITC fail to claim it.That is where Entergy’s support comes in.

We help increase the amount of federal money returned to our customers by raising awareness of the credit and supporting VITA sites to help qualifyingcustomers avoid high fees. Entergy’s VITA Plus program also provides customers with the opportunity to receive other services aimed at economic self-sufficiency, such as savings, credit repair, free bank accounts and financial coaching.

Since 2009, Entergy’s support of Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites has helped return $298 million to more than 164,000 residents throughout the company’s utility service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. The program has resulted in an estimated $450 million in economic benefits to the communities served by Entergy.

This tax season, Entergy will support free tax preparation services in person or virtually at VITA tax preparation sites. Due to COVID-19, many VITA sites are offering drop-off services. Customers can contact theirto confirm available services and sign up atto get their taxes prepared.

In 2021, employees logged nearly 2,000 volunteer hours helping customers file taxes and claim the EITC. More than 37,000 Entergy customers received $59 million in federal tax refunds through Entergy-sponsored VITA sites, including 7,006 customers who received $16 million in earned income tax credits.

The Circle of Giving Back: Mother-Daughter Duo Volunteer in Hometown /blog/circle-giving-back-mother-daughter-duo-volunteer-in-hometown Fri, 28 Jan 2022 21:26:00 +0000 /circle-giving-back-mother-daughter-duo-volunteer-in-hometown Looking around her childhood neighborhood, Shanta Mack, human resources associate with Entergy couldn’t help but share, “as a teenager, I never saw neighbors or local organizations come to my community to volunteer, but when the request was put out to revitalize the same streets that I grew up on, I had to jump at the opportunity.”

This year, Entergy employee volunteers celebrated Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a series of volunteer events across the New Orleans Metro Area over a three-day weekend. Mack and her sixteen-year-old daughter Aalaina joined the United Way of Southeast Louisiana and other community members to help develop an urban garden and refresh a local playground in the Desire Area.

Mack quickly realized that her old neck of the woods, which was once full of life, did not look the same as it did when she rode bikes with her friends to the local candy store. It was important for her to not only show her college-bound daughter where she grew up, but she also wanted her daughter to experience what it felt like to give back, especially to her own community.

“Volunteering with my daughter allows us to bond, but I also want her to take these opportunities to invest her time when she can, meet new people, learn new skills and gain volunteer hours for her college applications,” said Mack.

The mother-daughter duo worked hand-in-hand with other volunteers to build a picnic table for locals to have lunch or rest and built a stage for local artist to perform during community festivities.

“The weekend was the perfect opportunity to volunteer and continue Dr. King’s—and others who have made sacrifices to bring equality and diversity to our communities— legacy. I was happy to get out to represent Entergy for MLK Day and will continue to do my part in serving our communities,” said Mack.

The volunteer event was held in partnership with the .

Riddlebarger, Carter Discuss Entergy’s Low-income Customer Initiatives in Louisiana /blog/riddlebarger-carter-discuss-entergy-s-low-income-customer-initiatives-in-louisiana Wed, 17 Nov 2021 22:01:00 +0000 /riddlebarger-carter-discuss-entergy-s-low-income-customer-initiatives-in-louisiana Working with elected officials to support legislation that focuses on the needs of low-income customers is a priority for Patty Riddlebarger, Entergy’s vice president of corporate social responsibility.

Riddlebarger met with Rep. Carter of Louisiana’s second congressional district to discuss relief initiatives for low-income customers.

During her latest meeting with U.S. Representative Troy Carter of Louisiana’s second congressional district, theconversation centered on initiatives that are critical in providing relief for low-income customers in Louisiana, many of whom are struggling with financial impacts related to the ongoing pandemic and severe weather events. The second congressional district comprises nearly all of the city of New Orleans and stretches west and north to Baton Rouge.

“As a former member of the New Orleans City Council Utilities Committee, Representative Carter was very familiar with many of the issues and challenges our low-income customers face, such as rental assistance,” Riddlebarger said. “He expressed concern about the challenges that various parishes and agencies were experiencing in getting rental assistance funds to customers in need.”

Riddlebarger and Carter also discussed the vital role that the federal Low Income Home ϳԹ Assistance Program plays in providing utility bill-payment assistance for customers experiencing financial hardships. As a long-time advocate of LIHEAP, Entergy has been working with peer utilities to increase LIHEAP cooling assistance funds for warm-weather states, where extreme heat poses health hazards for many vulnerable residents.

“Representative Carter pledged his assistance for LIHEAP and was interested in learning more about Entergy’s efforts to expand relief for residents in Louisiana and throughout our four-state service area,” she said. “We plan to meet again in coming months to review the status of low-income initiatives and work together to secure more resources for individuals and families in need.”

For more than 100 years, Entergy has powered life in our communities through strategic philanthropy, volunteerism and advocacy. The company secured nearly $300 million in LIHEAP funding for low-income customers and helped them pay more than 1 million utility bills over the past five years. Entergy’s corporate social responsibility initiatives help create and sustain thriving communities, position the company for sustainable growth and are aligned with theUnited Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Entergy’s First ‘Day of Pro Bono Service’ Helps Low-income Residents /blog/entergys-first-day-pro-bono-service-helps-low-income-residents Wed, 10 Nov 2021 20:45:00 +0000 /entergys-first-day-pro-bono-service-helps-low-income-residents Entergy employees worked together to help low-income community members during the company’s first Day of Pro Bono Service Oct. 28.

Thirty-four attorneys and law students, including Entergy counsel from seven offices, collaborated to support a virtual legal clinic created and organized by Entergy, answering questions submitted toby low-income community members throughout the service area in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Examples of the questions they addressed included:

  • I get paid $3/hour as a server, and the employer takes some of my tips. Is this legal?
  • My mother gave notice to her apartment building to end her lease because she was moving into a home being built, but the build was delayed due to Hurricane Ida. The apartment building says they have already rented her unit. Does she have to move out of her apartment?
  • I was fired because I evacuated for Hurricane Ida. Is there anything I can do?

Collectively, participants logged 59.5 hours of legal pro bono time in just two hours – an approximate market value of $16,000 in legal services.

This was a first-of-its-kind event in our service area. Christy Kane, Entergy’s pro bono counsel, came up with the idea to bring together legal professionals in all four states, simultaneously, to help clear the queue of questions in each state’s freelegalanswers.org website.

“This event was an efficient and effective way to add sustainable value by helping low-income customers with pressing legal needs,” Kane said. “It was also fun to work with each other in teams, partnering with students and outside counsel from law firms Bradley and Duggins Wren. We look forward to hosting this again.”

Since 2012, the company’s legal pro bono program increased the commitment of company lawyers and paralegals to provide free legal assistance to some of the most vulnerable citizens living in our utility service territory.

In 2018, Entergy named Kane, a veteran litigator and leader of a Louisiana-based public interest law center, as Entergy’s first pro bono counsel. The Louisiana State Bar Association has honored members of the company’s legal department with the prestigious 2019 Friend of Pro Bono Award. In 2020, the Pro Bono Project named Entergy Outstanding Pro Bono Corporate Partner of the Year and the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project awarded Entergy their Torchbearer and Pro Bono awards.

In 2020, the legal department dedicated 3,622 hours to pro bono service, resulting in $932,000 of in-kind legal services to help more low-income customers in the communities we serve.

Entergy’s Day of Pro Bono Service was held during National Pro Bono Week Oct. 24-30.

Christy Kane and co-workers worked virtually to help low-income residents.

Entergy Provides Laptops to Students in Need /blog/entergy-provides-laptops-students-in-need Thu, 29 Jul 2021 18:48:00 +0000 /entergy-provides-laptops-students-in-need Entergy has donated more than 460 refurbished laptops this summer to school districts in our service territory so students have the technology they need when they return to school this fall.

The donated Lenovo ThinkPad laptops are valued at approximately $250 each – a total value of nearly $117,000. The devices were divided among school districts in low-income areas:

  • Texas – Port Arthur and Conroe independent school districts
  • Mississippi – Coahoma County School District
  • Louisiana – St. John the Baptist and Tangipahoa parish school systems
  • Arkansas – Lee County School District

In addition, the Orleans Parish School Board earlier received a cash donation from Entergy to purchase Chromebooks and mobile hotspots for students in need.

These donations are part of Entergy’s efforts to address racial equity across its service area by addressing the digital divide – the gap between those with sufficient knowledge of and access to technology and those without.

The initiative was created by Procter and Gamble. Entergy is one of several Fortune 500 companies participating in the effort, which aims to place 1 million connected devices into the hands of minority students.

Security of our data and the grid is of paramount importance to Entergy, so company computers are replaced after five years, even though most can last up to eight or more years.

“The refurbished devices we donate still have significant value. With improved educational opportunities a key focus of our corporate philanthropic efforts, we wanted to get these laptops into the hands of students who could benefit from them the most,” said Patty Riddlebarger, Entergy’s vice president of corporate social responsibility.

How it worked
Entergy IT employees identified laptop computers that were candidates for redeployment. A vendor refurbished the devices, removing all proprietary and licensed software owned by Entergy. IT employees from Entergy then volunteered time to re-install the Microsoft’s Windows operating system on each device and pack the laptops for shipping to the identified school districts. The school districts will load their own curriculum and software on the devices before distributing to students.
