Entergy, Arbor Day Foundation provide free trees to customers /blog/entergy-arbor-day-foundation-provide-free-trees-customers Mon, 24 Apr 2023 19:26:00 +0000 /entergy-arbor-day-foundation-provide-free-trees-customers Trees play a critical role in creating healthier, safer, and more connected communities. They clean our air, filter our water, and even slow storm surge and flooding in our cities. Trees also provide valuable shade, cooling urban areas by up to 10 degrees.

Not only that, trees can help you save money. When planted properly, a single tree can save a homeowner up to 20% on energy costs.

For the past several years, Entergy has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation to give customers free trees as part of the . The program focuses on homeowner education and environmental impact.

By entering a planting address, the program tool also calculates where homeowners can strategically plant trees for the greatest energy- and money-saving benefits.

Since Entergy launched its program in 2018, approximately 8,700 customers have received free trees to plant at home.

The program also benefits the community and the environment overall. Neighborhood trees have shown the ability to reduce stress, improve overall health and development in children, and encourage physical activity. And trees are a proven, affordable, natural way to quickly pull carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

Powered by Entergy’s Environmental Initiatives Fund, the tree giveaway is projected to avoid or capture more than 94.5 million pounds of carbon, absorb nearly 272,000 pounds of other air pollutants and filter nearly 425 million gallons of stormwater over the next 20 years.

Customers agree: free, energy-saving trees are good for everyone:

  • “More people should know about it. It’s free and lowers energy bill.”

Entergy is taking additional actions on climate change while maintaining our commitment to safely providing reliable, affordable and cleaner energy for customers and communities.

We recently published our latest climate report as an update to stakeholders and to provide transparency on our progress to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

“As a power provider for 3 million customers in four southern states, Entergy plays a critical role in delivering the clean energy solutions essential to lowering greenhouse gas emissions across the economy, without compromising affordability or service reliability,” said Drew Marsh, chief executive officer for Entergy. “This report outlines our thoughtfully planned climate actions moving forward and our approach to addressing uncertainties along the way.”

Entergy is one of the first utilities to address the totality of carbon emissions across its value chain – that is, Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions of all applicable greenhouse gases from all Entergy businesses.

In the report, we reaffirmed our commitment to by 2050 and discussed two interim carbon emission reduction targets. First, we expect 50% of our power generation capacity will come from clean, carbon-free energy sources by 2030, which is a new goal established as of the latest climate report. Second, we will reduce our carbon dioxide emissions rate by 50%, including owned and purchased power generation, from 2000 base-year emissions by 2030. Entergy also reaffirmed plans to retire all coal-powered generating plants by the end of 2030.

The report also discusses efforts to accelerate investments in power delivery system resilience. Entergy strives to build and maintain a reliable and resilient system. In response to the increased frequency in extreme weather events, we have broadened and updated our climate science-based analysis process. Based on this analysis, we are proactively accelerating our investments in resilience, especially in vulnerable areas.

This latest climate report builds on Entergy’s 20-year history of climate action and advances a cleaner, sustainable and more resilient future for all stakeholders. Read our foundational 2019 climate report and our 2020 addendum, which established our net-zero emissions by 2050 commitment .

Entergy’s nuclear fleet essential to meeting climate commitments /blog/entergys-nuclear-fleet-essential-meeting-climate-commitments Mon, 17 Oct 2022 19:00:00 +0000 /entergys-nuclear-fleet-essential-meeting-climate-commitments We are proud to celebrate Nuclear Science Week. NSW is an international, broadly observed week-long celebration to focus local, regional and international interests on all aspects of nuclear science. Nuclear Science Week is celebrated during the third week of October each year.

Entergy Nuclear owns and operates a national fleet of five nuclear reactors in four locations, generating enough clean, carbon-free electricity to power approximately 2.6 million homes. With 4,000 nuclear professionals located in multiple states, Entergy is more than just a fleet of nuclear power plants. We are a company dedicated to improving the lives of our customers, our communities and the environment in which we live and work.

By harnessing 100% clean nuclear energy, we can help our region transition to a low-carbon future while meeting the growing demands of our nation’s energy needs.

Entergy is committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Our clean, carbon-free nuclear fleet is playing a critical role in meeting our climate commitment.

Nuclear energy is clean.

It protects our air quality by generating electricity without harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulate matter or mercury.

Our fleet of nuclear plants prevents the emission of nearly 23 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year, according to the Nuclear ϳԹ Institute. That’s the same as taking approximately 5 million passenger vehicles off the road.

Nuclear energy is reliable.

Nuclear power plants are an efficient source of electricity, operating around the clock at a 92% capacity factor.

Not to mention, nuclear power plants are built to withstand the toughest of circumstances. The Waterford 3 Steam Electric Station returned to service, supplying clean power to devastated Louisiana communities, one week after a direct hit from Hurricane Ida.

Nuclear fuel is small but mighty.

One uranium fuel pellet is about the same size as a pencil eraser. That one pellet generates as much energy as one ton of coal, 149 gallons of oil or 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas.

A typical nuclear power reactor in our fleet generates enough electricity to power 530,000 homes without emitting any greenhouse gases. That’s more than enough to power Jackson, Mississippi, Little Rock, Arkansas, New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, combined.

Nuclear energy is critical to decarbonize the energy sector.

Entergy is taking aggressive action to combat climate change and its impacts to our region. We are committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and our nuclear portfolio is a major part of that equation. Learn more about our climate commitment here.

Entergy Mississippi to bring Sunflower Solar Station online /news/entergy-mississippi-bring-sunflower-solar-station-online Fri, 27 May 2022 05:47:00 +0000 /blog-post/entergy-mississippi-bring-sunflower-solar-station-online/ State’s largest utility-owned solar project will provide clean, renewable energy and an economic advantage

JACKSON, Miss. – Construction is complete on a 100-megawatt renewable solar power station near Ruleville in the Mississippi Delta, providing clean energy to Entergy Mississippi’s 461,000 customers. The Sunflower Solar Station is the largest utility-owned solar installation in Mississippi and provides enough energy to power 16,000 homes.

“It’s a historic day for Entergy Mississippi, our customers and our state,” said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO. “Powering communities is the heart of our business, and this power station will do that in several ways—by providing clean, green power to customers and a hedge against rising natural gas prices, and giving industries with renewable energy goals an incentive to locate or expand operations in our state.”

The solar station is also the first plant in what will be the largest expansion of renewable power in the state’s history. Under a program called EDGE, for “Economic Development with Green ϳԹ,” the company plans to replace some aging natural gas plants with 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy over the next five years.

Recurrent ϳԹ, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian Solar, Inc., developed and built the Sunflower Solar Station for Entergy Mississippi, which will own it for the life of the facility. Sunflower is one of the first utility-scale solar projects to be constructed under a Build Transfer Agreement in the United States. Recurrent ϳԹ signed a BTA with Entergy Mississippi in 2018 designating the regulated utility to own the Sunflower Solar project when it reached commercial operation. The BTA was approved unanimously by the Mississippi Public Service Commission in April 2020.

The Sunflower Solar Station employed Mississippi vendors and construction workers. Attala Steel Industries, based in Kosciusko, supplied 2,475 tons of steel for foundations. Additionally, A-1 Kendrick Fence Company, based in Jackson, installed the perimeter fence. More than half of the labor hours spent on the project’s construction were from workers local to the area and surrounding counties. Signal ϳԹ LLC served as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction provider.

“We are proud to have commissioned the largest utility-owned solar project in Mississippi on behalf of Entergy in a way that has supported Mississippi businesses and paved the way for more renewable energy in the state,” said Dr. Shawn Qu, Chairman and Chief Executive Office of Canadian Solar. “Sunflower is our first build-own-transfer project and our first project in Mississippi. We look forward to supporting the growth of solar throughout the southeast United States, and repeating this model which provides additional value for our customers.”

The emissions-free, renewable energy plant sits on approximately 1,000 acres in Sunflower County and connects to Entergy’s transmission grid in Ruleville. The plant is a single axis tracking photovoltaic power generator with 272,000 PV modules.

In 2021, ϳԹ announced plans to triple its renewable energy portfolio over a three-year period. The company expects to have 11,000 megawatts of renewable energy generation by the end of 2030. The Sunflower Solar Station is another milestone in our continued transformation of our power generation portfolio, meeting customers’ needs with clean, efficient and diverse sources of electricity while maintaining affordable rates. Throw me something recyclable, mister /blog/throw-me-something-recyclable-mister Tue, 22 Feb 2022 02:00:00 +0000 /throw-me-something-recyclable-mister It’s Carnival season in New Orleans. A time for floats, throws and fun. But when the parades are over, the clean-up begins. And what a clean-up it is: more than 2.5 million pounds of debris is left on the streets of New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

This trash — plastic cups, doubloons, toys and beads – can make its way into storm drains, where it increases the chance for flooding, and into the environment, creating ahazardto wildlife. But with a little effort, these items can be collected and recycled.

That’s why we are proud to partner for a more sustainable Carnival season by supporting several projects through our Environmental Initiatives Fund.

The EIF, funded by company shareholders, identifies environmentally beneficial projects or programs that help better the environment by reducing emissions, protecting natural resources and restoring wetlands and forests.

Entergy is once again working with, a nonprofit organization focused on waste prevention, to increase recycling efforts and expand the use of eco-friendly throws and consumable goods. Formed in 2017, Grounds Krewe’s efforts have proven to be the most successful parade waste reduction and recycling effort in the history of New Orleans.

“Supporting a recycling program that helps ensure a sustainable Mardi Gras, which is so closely associated with our company hometown’s unique culture and appeal, fits well with our mission to add sustainable value to our communities and our commitment to protect the environment,” said Kelli Dowell, Entergy’s director of environmental policy.

On the Route Parade Recycling
Revelers will benefit from a parade recycling activity in partnership with Entergy, ArcGNO, The Urban Conservancy and Republic Services.

Paradegoers should be on the lookout for volunteers in neon vests Feb. 26, during the krewes of Iris and Tucks parades and Feb. 27, during the krewes of Okeanos, Mid-City and Thoth parades. Volunteerswill distribute labeled recycling bags to paradegoers before the first parade and collect unwanted throws, aluminum cans and plastic waste following the last parade.

Sustainable Throw Catalog
Entergy is also helping ensure a more sustainable Mardi Gras even before a parade begins. Grounds Krewe was awarded a grant from Entergy’s shareholder-funded Environmental Initiatives Fund to launch an online.

Catalog items are made from sustainable materials and biodegradable packaging and promote Louisiana’s unique culture. This year’s environmentally friendly options include red beans, jambalaya mix and ground coffee. Keep your eyes peeled and your hands raised high for these coveted sustainable throws throughout the Carnival season.
