By the time shutdowns began in March 2020, Entergy’s proactive approach kept employees and facilities safe while the company continued to serve customers.

On a parallel track, low-income and charitable giving efforts kicked into high gear. In April, Entergy Mississippi donated more than $385,000 to create the , launching an unprecedented response effort augmented by Entergy’s workforce across Mississippi.

“It became evident that we needed to do more for customers and communities that were facing new hardships,” said Haley Fisackerly, Entergy Mississippi president and CEO. “The pandemic really took a toll on low-income households that were already struggling to make ends meet. We had to act fast to help working families with basic needs until their financial situations became more stable.”

By leveraging its network of community partners, Entergy Mississippi directed relief funds to 15 organizations that were well-positioned to provide a variety of services. Recipients included Salvation Army agencies, United Way agencies, Mississippi Food Network, Refill Café and Extra Table.

The company also formed new partnerships to address pandemic challenges.

When a national shortage of hand sanitizer threatened workforce safety, Entergy worked with Cathead Distillery in Jackson to produce enough to supply its facilities in four states and offer free bottle fill-ups to communities.

By mid-2020, Entergy had dedicated almost $3 million to in its four-state service area and The Power to Care, which helps low-income customers pay utility bills.

Pandemic increases customer assistance efforts

Entergy Mississippi also stepped up bill-payment relief efforts with an Enhanced Customer Assistance Plan, which expanded payment extension options, waived late fees, and reimbursed credit and debit card convenience fees. In addition, the company suspended service disconnects for non-payment and worked directly with customers on bill-payment arrangements that fit their specific needs.

Entergy earned national recognition for its efforts to communicate with customers about bill-payment assistance. Many low-income customers were already familiar with the Low Income Home ϳԹ Assistance Program, but economic pressures caused by the pandemic expanded the pool of eligible recipients. Raising awareness among customers was key in helping them receive federal relief.

On top of dealing with a pandemic, many Entergy customers were impacted by a devastating storm season in 2020 that included Hurricane Laura, the strongest storm to hit Louisiana in more than 160 years. Mississippi employees were part of a massive restoration team that worked around the clock to restore service safely, rebuild infrastructure, and help communities recover, all while following virus-prevention protocols.

Through individual acts of generosity, employees throughout Mississippi did their part to support a variety of needs. They donated surgical masks to hospitals and first responders, delivered nonperishable food supplies to relief agencies, organized charitable fundraisers and volunteered in their communities.

“With customers facing so many challenges during the pandemic, our employees were prepared to be part of the solution,” Fisackerly said. “They applied their training in safety, customer service and storm response to respond effectively to the crisis and keep the power flowing. Their performance helped reinforce the fact that when our customers and communities need us, we’ll always be there for them.”

Supply chain organization donates nearly $700,000 in sanitizing goods /blog/supply-chain-organization-donates-nearly-700-000-in-sanitizing-goods Mon, 12 Dec 2022 20:00:00 +0000 /supply-chain-organization-donates-nearly-700-000-in-sanitizing-goods Entergy’s supply chain organization this year donated more than 8,000 cases of hand and surface sanitizing liquid, spray and wipes, valued at $694,000. The supplies were distributed to six community partners in the greater New Orleans area and to the Feeding America Food Network, which serves affiliate food banks across the country.

The supplies were originally purchased in 2019 and 2020 for use by employees in Entergy’s offices and plant facilities but remained stored in company warehouses since most employees worked remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Ordinarily, supplies like these would be stored initially in the warehouses after purchase and delivered over time to our facilities, but for most of 2020 and 2021 the amount of these supplies needed for our facilities dropped as the pandemic persisted and many employees worked from home,” said Eddie Allemore, Entergy’s manager, supply chain warehouse operations. “We needed the space those supplies were occupying for storm readiness and other requirements, plus the supplies needed to be used before their expiration dates.”

Entergy donated the supplies to nonprofits on the frontline that serve, feed and educate our communities – especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and a period of high inflation. Entergy’s supply chain and corporate social responsibility groups worked together to choose the community partners that received the supplies.

The nonprofits and the value of the donations they received included:

  • Culture Aid NOLA – $61,890: This organization’s mission is to direct no-barrier, no-stigma aid to underserved members of New Orleans’ cultural community with dignity, grace and hospitality. CAN launched in March 2020 as a collaborative between several cultural service nonprofits to combat food insecurity heightened by the pandemic.
  • Second Harvest/Feeding America food network – $325,374:
    • Feeding America is the largest charity working to end hunger in the United States. It partners with food banks, food pantries and local food programs across the country to bring food to people facing hunger.
    • Second Harvest is the largest charitable anti-hunger network in South Louisiana. Its mission is to end hunger by providing food access, advocacy, education and disaster response.
  • Educare New Orleans – $184,576: Educare New Orleans is the first early childhood development and education facility of its kind in the Gulf South. It is a national network of early learning schools which share a platform to leverage strong and lasting investments in early childhood education for low-income families.
  • United Way of Southeast Louisiana – $87,200: United Way SELA provides funding to programs, collaboratives and initiatives serving the people of Jefferson, Orleans, Plaquemines, St. Bernard, St. Tammany, Tangipahoa and Washington parishes.
  • New Orleans Recreation Development Foundation – $35,001: The NORD Foundation is a nonprofit organization that raises funds to support the activities of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission.
The supplies were distributed to six Entergy community partners in greater New Orleans and to the Feeding America Food Network, which serves affiliate food banks across the country.

Entergy is committed to creating a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for all our stakeholders. The supply chain organization is helping Entergy carry out this commitment by integrating environmental, social and governance practices into its management strategy. Entergy New Orleans Helps Support Healthy Communities /blog/entergy-new-orleans-helps-support-healthy-communities Tue, 17 Aug 2021 00:06:00 +0000 /entergy-new-orleans-helps-support-healthy-communities At Entergy New Orleans, we pride ourselves on our storm preparation and response. While COVID-19 is a different kind of storm, we must all be prepared and respond as this fast-developing public health issue evolves.

Entergy New Orleans has joined the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, the GNO Foundation, and other funders in contributing $150,000 to support Mayor LaToya Cantrell and NOLA Public School’s initiative to provide high school students, who have parental or guardian consent, the opportunity to receive COVID-19 vaccinations on campus through mobile vaccine clinics. The funding will help support the clinics for five months.

Serving our community is at the heart of what we do. In 2020, our overall contributions to Orleans Parish non-profits were more than $2.7 million to help provide meals for families, fund crisis grants to hospitality, grocery and front-line workers, and support to small businesses.

With the resurgence of COVID, it is more important now than ever that we remain united with our community partners to help reduce the spread of the virus.

The Heart of Customer Service: Not Missing a Beat During the Pandemic /blog/heart-customer-service-not-missing-beat-during-pandemic Mon, 07 Jun 2021 19:38:00 +0000 /heart-customer-service-not-missing-beat-during-pandemic The United States Post Office has a slogan about its commitment to customers. Adding a support system, empathy, and trusted counselors to the mix captures the commitment of the employees from Entergy New Orleans’ Customer Care Centers.

COVID-19 presented extraordinary challenges for customers and businesses. In true public service fashion, the Care Centers took immediate steps to be able to continue partnering with customers offering in-person bill payment and customer service assistance. In less than 24 hours, the Care Centers in New Orleans and Algiers had completed a deep sanitization of the buildings and transformed the facilities to follow CDC guidelines.

Furniture was moved for social distancing and to adhere to limited indoor capacity rules, six feet reminder markings were placed inside and outside the Care Centers, and specially sized plexiglass barriers were installed as an extra layer of protection.

While navigating through the changes in work, the 18 Care Center employees continued full-service bill help offerings. In fact, aside from the 24 hours the Care Centers closed to implement COVID-19 safety measures, they have remained open for normal operating hours. Customers from as far as Mississippi and Texas have travelled to the Care Centers for that personal guidance the Care Center employees are known for.

There may come a time when you are faced with a situation where you know you must go above and beyond to help those in need. That’s how the Care Center employees found themselves during the pandemic.

Their commitment to the community, customers and neighbors remains unwavering.

Federal Rent, Utility Bill Assistance Now Available to Qualifying Arkansans /news/federal-rent-utility-bill-assistance-now-available-qualifying-arkansans Fri, 21 May 2021 06:30:00 +0000 /blog-post/federal-rent-utility-bill-assistance-now-available-qualifying-arkansans/ Arkansans who are having trouble paying rent or utility bills due to COVID-19 can apply now for federal money to help cover costs incurred since April 2020, including Entergy Arkansas customers and others across the state.

“Because of COVID-19, many of our customers are facing unexpected financial hardship – some due to illness, loss of jobs and other factors,” said Entergy Arkansas Vice President of Customer Service Michael Considine. “These assistance programs along with payment plans can help Entergy Arkansas customers who rent their home keep their power on while they continue to navigate these unprecedented times.”

The Federal Emergency Rental Assistance Program has allocated $173 million to be administered through the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS), and state officials estimate some 56,000 households will qualify for the program. DHS established the Arkansas Rent Relief Program to distribute the available funds.

Eligible households may receive up to 15 months of assistance for rent and/or utility costs incurred between April 1, 2020 and December 31, 2021. Covered utilities include electric, gas and water. Up to three months of future rent may be applied for at one time; utilities may be applied for monthly once the bill is received. Officials said an eligible household is defined as a renter household in which at least one or more individuals:

  • qualifies for unemployment or has experienced a reduction in household income, incurred significant costs, or experienced a financial hardship due to COVID-19;
  • demonstrates a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability; and
  • has a household income at or below 80% area median income.

Landlords and tenants may submit an application for rent relief. Utility-only applicants do not need their landlord to submit an application. Funds will be paid directly to landlords and utility service providers, including Entergy Arkansas, for past due bills. Residents of , , and counties must apply through their local county government, and more information is available through DHS or online at .

Entergy Arkansas stopped all service disconnects for nonpayment in March 2020 but has resumed disconnections along with other utilities in the state per direction from the Arkansas Public Service Commission.

“Entergy Arkansas customers who have outstanding bills should contact us online, through the Entergy app or by phone immediately to enroll in a payment plan and to avoid disconnection before it occurs,” Considine said.

For more information about the federal program, visit entergy.com/covid-19/rental-assistance. Other free programs are also available to help low income residential customers lower their energy usage and costs, along with bill payment assistance, and can be found online at . We are preparing to respond to severe weather predicted to strike our service territory tomorrow /stormcenter/we-are-preparing-respond-severe-weather-predicted-strike-our-service-territory-tomorrow Wed, 17 Mar 2021 04:39:00 +0000 /we-are-preparing-respond-severe-weather-predicted-strike-our-service-territory-tomorrow After a record-setting hurricane season and historic winter storms, we are preparing now to respond to possible power outages across our territory due to severe weather starting Wednesday. The severe weather could include tornadoes, hail, damaging winds, flash flooding and lightning.

  • Tornadoes are considered the most violent natural storm. They are formed from powerful thunderstorms and often are formed from tropical storms and hurricanes.
  • Some tornadoes are clearly visible with the familiar funnel-shaped cloud extending to the ground, while others are obscured by the storm clouds that form them.
  • The skies where tornadoes form are a dark, often greenish sky, with a large, dark, low-lying cloud (particularly if rotating). Large hail is usually a sign of an impending tornado.
  • Because they strike with little or no advance warning and move quickly with wind speeds up to 300 mph, tornadoes are a serious threat to your safety. Having a family emergency plan and a kit of basic emergency supplies on hand is especially important.

The forecast shows this weather system to enter our territory Wednesday afternoon and move eastward. It should clear by early Thursday.

We stay prepared to respond to storm outages through a very detailed, rehearsed plan. We are implementing that plan now by assembling and organizing the workforce needed to safely and quickly restore service to our customers.

As we prepare, we are also maintaining safety precautions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with our standard storm preparations, we are taking additional steps to adjust office settings and crew staging locations, to helping team members maintain social distancing.

Guidelines have been provided to field crews to ensure social distancing can be maintained while working, with the direction that if the crew is not able to maintain adequate social distance the job or task should be postponed. Crews are encouraged to use stop-work authority if job conditions change that prevent social distancing.

For their safety and yours, please stay away from their work zones. If you need to report a problem with your service or get bill payment help, we’re just a phone call away: 1-800-ENTERGY(1-800-368-3749).

You can expect regular updates from us through the many available communications channels.

When restoration starts, keep in mind that if you don’t see us working near you, we may be working on another part of the electrical system that you can’t see but must be repaired to get power to you.

If you lose power:

  • Stay away from downed power lines. You can’t tell from looking at them whether they are energized or not, so assume they are. Report them to 1-800-9OUTAGE (1-800-968-8243).
  • Report your power outage online or call 1-800-9OUTAGE (1-800-968-8243).
  • If you report your outage by phone, trust the automated system. It works very well. There is no need to speak with a customer service representative to report an outage.
  • If you have a portable generator, use it safely. DO NOT run it in an enclosed space. If connecting to the whole house, do so only if the connection has been installed by a licensed electrician. More information is available on Entergy Stormcenter.
  • Do not open your refrigerator or freezer door. Food will stay cold much longer this way.
  • Stay clear of linemen as they work.

To stay up to date on outages and restoration:

  • Download our free app for your smartphone at entergy.com/app.
  • Sign up for text alerts by texting REG to 36778 and have your account number and ZIP code handy. The registration pattern is as follows including spaces: REG (account number) (ZIP code). Once registered, text OUT to 36778 to report an outage.

Entergy Volunteers Provide Free Tax Preparation for Qualified Customers /blog/entergy-volunteers-provide-free-tax-preparation-for-qualified-customers Wed, 10 Feb 2021 00:38:00 +0000 /entergy-volunteers-provide-free-tax-preparation-for-qualified-customers At Entergy, We Power Life means working together to improve lives, create opportunities, strengthen communities and proactively find solutions to customers facing economic challenges.

As part of this commitment to empower low-income customers, the company will once again help customers who qualify for the federal Earned Income Tax Credit claim the money they’ve earned. Entergy will also continue its partnership with community advocates to support free IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance tax preparation services for qualifying customers. Funding for this effort is provided through shareholder contributions and does not impact customer bills.

The EarnedIncome Tax Creditis one of the nation’s most effective tools for lifting low-income workers and their families above the poverty line.A worker’s EITC grows with each additional dollar of earnings until reaching the maximum value. This creates an incentive for people to leave welfare for work and for low-wage workers to increase their work hours.

Although Entergy’s tax season support continues this year, it will be largely virtual or using safe, social distancing practices due to COVID-19. For example, while the company won’t hold Super Tax Day events this tax season, we will continue to support free tax preparation services with employee volunteers and financial support for technology and personal protective equipment to ensure a safe environment for tax filers and preparers.

Qualifying customers can get their taxes prepared for free by IRS-certified volunteers at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance tax preparation sites. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, VITA programs are offering more options to tax filers including appointments, drop off services and virtual tax preparation. In addition, customers may sign up for a VITA site to prepare taxes at . Information from getyourrefund.org will used to match a tax filer with a nearby VITA provider. Contact the provider in your community to confirm available services. VITA site locations are available at .

Also due to COVID-19, customers may qualify for an Economic Impact Payment, also known as a “stimulus check,” of $1,200. Customers who didn’t receive your stimulus check in 2020 may be able to claim the payment as the Recovery Rebate Tax Credit on their tax return filed in 2021 for tax year 2020.

IRS-certified volunteers from Entergy and community partners are available to help residents who earn $57,000 or less determine if they qualify to receive the tax benefits. Qualifying families can receive as much as $6,700 through EITC. Household funds gained through EITC enable recipients to make life-changing choices such as improved education, home ownership and other actions which have long-term positive economic benefits.

Entergy’s VITA Plus program also provides customers with the opportunity to receive other services aimed at economic self-sufficiency, such as savings, credit repair, free bank accounts and financial coaching. In some areas, Entergy’s VITA Plus program also includes matched savings accounts for qualified families. Families who open an individual development account and participate in a year of financial coaching and continued savings have the opportunity for their savings to be matched 2:1 or more, through some of Entergy’s community partners.

In 2020, more than 39,000 Entergy customers received $49.3 million in federal tax refunds, including 11,000 customers who received $24.1 million through the EITC.Since 2009, we’ve helped more than 160,000 working families receive $280 million in EITC refunds. This has resulted in an estimated $420 million in economic benefits to communities served by Entergy.
